It is great how how government can decide all our Corvettes are clumkers. Just think I can take my 89 6 speed convertable with removable hardtop and 42000 miles to a car dealer and get $3500.00 for it if I trade it in on a little gas efficent car. They say it avareges 19 miles per gallon, I get 24.5 or better all the time, guess I got an unusuall one. Wonder if I could get GM to sell me a 2010 ZR1 for $3500.00 since it is just a new clunker.

They interviewed a woman on TV that traded in a Ford F-150 and got the $4500 credit. From what they showed of the pickup it looked in good shape and probably worth more than the $4500 credit.

Guess since the govt (us?) owns GM they needed a way to boost sales?

Oh, well.

It's like this, common sense must enter into the equation. If it doesn't then good cars get snagged.

Your low mileage 89 is NOT the target. That 89 with 250k miles, no rings and no paint or interior to speak of is the target. The one that belches crap because it still has the OEM cat and plugs with 200k miles.

Would I take my 92 down? nope. It's a good car, and I have no interest in getting a sipper. Do I want to take on payments? Nope.

But... if I was and the car I had sucked, sure... it would be a motivator.

The government isn't doing this to get your old worthless vette off the road, they are doing it to get you into a new compact car with a car payment. Because taxing the gas isn't good enough. You could trade in a 2001 Caprice with 0 miles and they'd give you 4500 as long as you bought an econo-box with it.

These people getting a $4500 rebate will pay three times that in interest and depreciation vs. what they traded in.

They aren't crushing anything as far as I know. Your trade in would just be sold at auction to a used-car dealer.

it should be recycled.

I would prefer if the old parts were removed, reused and the car recycled. Otherwise, the deal isn't ultimately doing as promised.

If I had a POS 1990 anything, that sucked gas, belched shit and looked like crap, I would be more than happy to trade it.

I am just not in the mood to do so.

The other thing... most Americans still view small cars as being cheap and size means everything.

Here in the UK, big is a VW Passat, Citroen C6 or a Renault Migane. And diesel rules. I rode in my cousins Toyota Corolla Versa (think Matrix). It has a small TDI engine and it was such a nice ride. 6spd manual, and smooth as silk. You could hear this nice little turbo woosh as it sped up. Very nice and seemed very peppy... also gets 45mpg!!!!

The dealers pour some kind of crap called engine bomb into the engine to ensure it will never run again, then the entire car is scrapped. Major big time punishment for any dealer that does not destroy the trade in.

Ok. Wow, now I have renewed hatred for the government.

There doesn't have to be anything wrong with the car to qualify, so some perfectly usable cars would be getting scrapped. At our expense.

"From the official cars.gov website:
“The CARS Act requires that the trade-in vehicle be crushed or shredded so that it will not be resold for use in the United States or elsewhere as an automobile. The entity crushing or shredding the vehicles in this manner will be allowed to sell some parts of the vehicle prior to crushing or shredding it, but these parts cannot include the engine or the drive train.”

Anyone familiar with junk—salvage—yard operations knows that parts are not removed from vehicles until they are bought."

This is OT, but I'm curious about the Hayabusa drag bike in your avatar, gascaleman. Yours? Looks pretty insane.

I just stopped drag racing motorcycles at age 68 my joint pains, etc. made it not fun anymore. Bike was 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa streached 8 inches lowered 4 inches allout drag bike. I ran some AMA races and all SEMDRA for the past 5 years. Bike, with big motor turned mid to low 5's 1/8 mile and mid to low 8's 1/4 mile. With stock motor low 6's 1/8 and high 9's 1/4. Various other stuff done to bike for racing but that pretty much describes it. Now I am playing with my just aquired 89, triple black 6 speed convertable with 42,000 miles and hardtop. Old guys got to have fun too. I still have a need for speed!

That is really cool. Bloody fast!

If you care to take the time, I sure would enjoy looking at some more bike pix, if you have any. I've owned a few sport bikes and a few dirt bikes in my day. Hoping to be "on two" again for next season.

We have an "other vehicles" section. That you could share them in. We have a few motorcyclists here that would surely get a kick out of them.

No pressure from me though.
