Well, as you should know from daily chat, my wife wanted hardwood floors. Which means I'm putting in hardwood floors...lol. We were able to find some very nice prefinished red oak 3/4 solid wood floors at Menards on sale for $3.39 sq foot. So we picked it up last week and I got started on the prep work on Thursday.

Moved furniture out of the living room:

Photobucket

Partially cleaned up the family room when this was taken:

Gives you an idea of the size I'm working with:

The product:

Carpet gone:

Photobucket

Starter strip edge was laid out with a laser and a chalk line. Total expansion gap ended up being 1" once I trimmed the bottom of the drywall with a sawzall (PIA). Once that was down we laid out the first few rows of boards, selecting ones that fit well with minor loss at the ends. It's important to weed out the bad boards since the manufacturer states 10% will be bad right off the bat

Photobucket

Measured and cut a few rows worth at a time, then tap them together and nail with blind nails.

Photobucket

That's all we got done for the evening. About 12-14 rows. We'll get more finished up later.

Fun, ain't it? Looks great so far Matthew.

10% bad boards kinda blows me away. I had 3 fugly pieces in 400 sq ft, just used them in a closet.

Thanks guys. The wood is prefinished. VB - the couch is actually tan, but works nicely with our color scheme.

No flooring today, we have a party across the street at 6. Try to get some more done tomorrow.

My couch isn't white either really it's kinda cream colored.
But, since you got one too..... what do you clean these things with? I'm told not to use anything water based, I've spilled wine and tea on there, the ex-BFs grandson made a mess or two with food. You can't see it unless you get right up on it but I need to clean it...

As far as the couch, ours is microfiber. If there is a spill, we wipe it up right away and it's done. But there are some microfiber cleansers available that are supposed to work well, we just haven't used one yet. There are some areas on the couch where dirt and hair gel/spray have built up, I'll have to buy some of the cleanser and try it.

Mine is microfiber too. All the cleansers I've found around here (go figure) says not to use them on furniture as it will leave stain rings. Sheesh..... Next time I'm gettin' leather...

OK, some more progress was made. Sunday night my BIL came over and worked a couple hours and when I came home from work we finished the floors in the front room:

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Today, he came over while I was at work again and worked a couple of hours. When I got home, my neighbor came by and we tinkered for a couple of hours. The end result is the family room is about 40% complete:

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Overall the floors look great. I am a little pissed at the amount of garbage wood in the boxes. Some of it is just ugly, and some of it is milled wrong (tongue missing, sloppy cuts, etc). I figure I'll have to throw out around two boxes full of wood. That is 24 sq ft per box at 3.39 a square foot. Irritating to say the least. But I will be happy when this is over and I can get my house back in order.

Looking good! I wish mine was a prefinished wood instead of the laminate. I'm going to do this one day, but I have a lot of sq footage to cover.

That's just insane, I'd be screaming at the manufacturer.
I has 3 bad pieces in 400 sq ft, all were off color. Every tongue, etc. was perfect.
I'd slam them hard on the web.

I also have $40 in stickon felt applies to all mt chair, table, etc. legs.

BIL came over today while I was at work and finished the laying of the hardwood. Looks pretty nice. Overall I'd give it about an 8.5/10 with real unfinished/stained hardwood being a 10 and pergo being about a 3. As far as the wood, a lot of the pieces are structurally ok, but cosmetically unappealing. My BIL is boxing them up and returning them. I'll get some pics up later.

Matt how much difference is there between the tile and the wood? What kind of transition piece are you going do there? Looking good.

Not for the price he paid. I am in the flooring business, and that is a low price. It sounds like par for the course. Most flooring available in discount type establishments are reduced quality compared to what you would find at a hardwood dealer.

Pete, I understand where you're coming from.

Maybe I got lucky but, I did my homework on manufactures.

But again "I has 3 bad pieces in 400 sq ft, all were off color. Every tongue, etc. was perfect"

And I paid $0.50 less per square tham Matthew.

Wood and tile are almost 100% level. Unfortunately the tile has a "wavy edge" style so we can't butt the wood directly to it. We will be using oak t-molding.

Got most of the base shoe down, but had to quit before it was 100%. Looks like I'll have to pick up another 8 foot piece because I'm not piecing together 3-4 1.5 ft pieces on the wall. Oh well. Also got the first coat of stain/polyurethane on the t-molding. The color appears to match very well, but it's still wet and the first coat.

Here's a question for my resident woodshop teacher, TB - should I varnish the bottom side of the trim? Will it affect the wood as far as expansion, water absorbtion, etc? I'm leaning towards yes, since the tile floor will be mopped and I don't want the wood soaking that up.

Thanks. I'm gonna put on a quick coat this morning on the underside since the top should be dry. I still need to pick up some 000 steel wool since I can't find mine

Well, I got the floor molding stained and ready to go. My neighbor came over and gave me a hand with the seams (or pretty much did it all...lol). Those 22.5* cuts are a lot harder than they look. Go figure. Turned out quite nice.

But of course, since this day has already been crappy, just add to it. Ran to Lowe's to get the last piece of base shoe that I needed. Went to the aisle, picked it out, paid, came home. Come to find out some asshat put the wrong size base shoe in the container and of course, I picked it. So I ended up with 1/2" instead of 7/16", and yes it is very noticeable. So I still have that last little bit to finish up along with caulking the trim and filling the holes. But consider this 98% done. Should be finished up tomorrow

Of course I forgot to mention the real kicker. Now that the floors are done my wife wants two new area rugs and all new furniture for the front room (that we don't even use). So essentially she wants new furniture to look at and never sit on. It never ends!!!
