Sears has a deal to sell Craftsman brand tools at Ace Harware stores. Sounds like a good deal to me, for Sears, that is. We had a tool discussion here not too long ago. This I found interesting. The article said Danaher Tool Group is a manufacturer of Craftsman tools. I looked up Danaher. The Md. based company is the "world's largest manufacturer of ratchets, sockets and wrenches." They will also be marketing their tools to the industrial, construction and gov't end-user markets.

I like Craftsman well enough, at least you can get replacements easily.

I can't stand their electric tools.

K Mart sells Craftsman too.

The only time I shop at Sears for tools is at Christmas when the stuff is about 1/2 price.

Sears/Kmart are the same company.

Ace is interesting... they are probably looking for an additional outlet now that they are losing OSH. Sears owned OSH (a big home supply store here in SoCal) and they sold them. The deal was for 3 years after OSH was sold. I think that three years is about done...

Bill, I agree... Craftsman electrics SUCK.

Their selection at our location has decreased. Its what I have always used. K-Mart had bought Sears, which was weird here because this happened when our K-Mart closed.

Yea, haven't bought any for years, The plastic stuff I have all broke.
I was able to get brushes for a 15 year old drill off the website though, couldn't get the gears for a 7in. buffer.

I have some metal housing Sears electrics that are a million years old and still woek very well.

Agreed. I am happy with all of my craftsman stuff, however I find a lot of it to be overpriced.

Overpriced?? With hand tools you get what you pay for.

Try pricing Snapon or Mac... then check back.

I have. And I also have some miscellaneous mac tools, as well as other brands. With craftsman hand tools there is no doubt good quality. But you are paying for the warranty as much as the quality. I only buy them as Bill says, when they are 40% off on sale.

To be fair, SOME of the electric power tools are OK. The consumer line of tools are crap. Their "professional line is (or at least used to be) produced by Black and Decker. Before people go off on B&D, they are the owners of DeWalt, Porter-Cable, and Delta. But with that said, you can probably buy the name brand stuff just as cheap (or cheaper), with the same warranty (or better).

Milwaukee tools is now a subsidiary of Ryobi. Ryobi bought them out a couple years back.

Well............................... I've been slowly building a second tool box for the shop cause my main roller is usually in the racetrailer.
2 Christmas price examples: The 73 piece 3/8 & 1/4 in. drive set. Regular: $89.99, Christmas: $29.99

Std. or Metric regular GearWrench combination wrench set, 10 and 8 piece. Regular: $81 Christmas: $19.99

I bought the rachet set and both GearWrench sets for $70, the regular price would have been $252.00

But, maybe Matthew & I are just cheapos.

Fair point Tom, but just cause they own them doesn't mean they produce them in the same plant.
All I buy now is Dewalt, no Black & Dorker for me.

But I can't afford Milwaukee.

There might be some differences in quality, just remember that they have the different lines. Craftsman professional line is pretty good stuff. I have a couple of them at school. B&D brand is the same way, but most of the B&D stuff is consumer grade whereas the Dewalt stuff is their "Pro" line. Personally with woodworking tools I lean toward Porter-Cable, especially when it comes to routers...I personally own 8 P-C routers, 1 old Stanley, 1 old Ryobi and a Makita. The P-C's are my favorites. I have a few Dewalt tools, my reciprocating saw (Sawzall...I wish), 1 of my miter saws (12" compound), and a 1/2" hammer-drill. They are very good tools.

The Dewalt name came from the radial arm saw line that B&D bought way back in the 30's (IIRC). In the 80's when B&D's market share was waning, they did research as to the 'most trusted and recognized names in woodworking tools' Dewalt came up in the top picks, so they decided to exploit that feature and basically renamed the B&D Pro line "DeWalt" and the rest is history. That change might have saved B&D from bankruptcy.

This was in the B.C. (before cordless) days. I would see the way the guys would treat the company purchased drills on the jobsite, so I started buying $10.00 B&D drills. A month later when it burned out or broke from being dropped off a ladder, throw it out and give 'em another one to destroy.

I found it at a Storage Unit sale.
What I really wanted was the Sunnin valve & head grinding equipment but I got to the sale late.

One of these days, I'll post a pic of my engine hoist, the one that's big enough to pull a Corvette body off the frame.

If you really want to see the longevity of a power tool, outfit a high school wood shop. Over the years of 8 hours a day 5 days a week for 36 weeks the gremlins in the power tool design will show up. The best of the best. Routers Porter Cable the shop has 6 ,Corded drill Milwaukee we have 4, Sawsall Milwaukee, sabre saw Makita, Sanders Porter Cable and Makita plus Ingesal Rand Air DA,Cordless drills, Makita 1/2" Hammer Drill Lithum Ion which is totally abused.
Hand Tools a mix of Crasftsman and Stanley. Before they pulled the Auto Shop out in 05 we had Snap-on,Mac and some Cornwell hand tools.

Before Danaher it was Esco tool Maufacturing until the late 60's that made Craftsman hand tools. The Craftsman label was bought by Sears to compete against Montgomery Wards and JCPenneys in the 40's. Back in the day Emerson made their power Tools. Ryobi makes their cordless tools today. Esco was acquired by Danaher in the beginning of the 70's to complete their tool works. Danaher also made Proto, a Blackhawk and some S-K Wayne. How do I know this the Guru's ask! One of my students (a senior honor student extremely rare in Wood Shop) did a research report of hand tools after being inspired by a Modern Marvels TV show. BTW Harbor Freight tool brand "Pittsburgh" was designed in the US and uses the same forging techniques as Danaher with matching results.

Most of these hand tools have been around since Jesus time. If you know how to use them you will never go back to stationary power tools. Zen experience with the wood.

I would totally agree with Ron, high school students can find the weak link in any tool. I have several of those old wood hand planes, they work like no new hand tools. Don't know why, maybe it's the quality of the steel in the irons. I have probably 40 old hand planes, cabinet scrapers and spokeshaves and still use them. I love working with hand tools, but time dictates that I can't do it all that way for those "paying jobs".

The kids are getting lazy, they don't want to work that hard Ron. I tell them that scraping the surface first makes sanding way easier and faster.....Heck I quit fighting them.
