I'm on AT&T so I think it's to go ahead and pick one up.

So, what's should I look for?

What's with the package deals

Why and I seeing a separate charge for messages?

If I have a data plan I'd just be using the web browser to check my email, so why would I need it?

When I was looking for a combo plan, TV,Web,Phone, I had to tell AT&T to shove it.

There are no cheap ATT plans! I don't think you'll get anything with a data plan for less than $90/month.

The iPhone data plan is $30 a month.

I've thought of an iPhone a few times, but I can still do more with my old 8525 and I ever could with an iPhone.

You might want to look at the Tilt2 instead.....

Come over to Verizon and get the DROID
Google Navigation is the balls and its just a great little device.
I love mine - $30 a month for the data plan and you will probably get a great deal for leaving AT&T

That $30 a month buys you an 'unlimited' data plan that has a monthly cap of 5Gb. Clearly, we are using different dictionaries to define 'unlimited'. Something got lost in translation somewhere.

But wait, there's more! That $30 a month data plan grants you the ability to use an 'unlimited' 5Gb of data...as long as that data doesn't come from a Microsoft Exchange email server. If you want the privilege of connecting with an Exchange email account you have to pay $45 a month for the 5Gb of unlimited data.

WTF???

That's a pretty old article. There is no cap. I heard that crap a while ago too and its just false.

As far as teathering, I have never looked into it as I don't really have a need. I think there is a hack for that but most providers do charge a teathering fee I believe.

The 8525 is about the last one that tethers... The newer tilts don't do it either.

I have an iPhone. And I like it. It's a good piece.

AT&T disables the ability to turn on DUN in the phone registry (this is for WM phones), the 8525 did not have DUN available by default.

It's a simple fix to turn on the DUN feature on any of the WM phones.

Although, this only becomes an issue if you want to have the ability to use the phone as a wireless modem.

There are workarounds for the Exchange server. At work (although we have Tmobile blackberries) they found a way to access our exchange email server without paying for microsoft's software. I think it was through tmobile.

If you have smtp, pop, or whatever access to your email and don't use an exchange server, it's a non issue.

I have the iPhone as well, love the thing, use it for everything, but I'm on the minimum plan and it's $93/mo.
That part does suck. But for my area AT&T is the majority choice so most of my calls fall into the mobile to mobile free minutes and AT&T works best here.

I've had the original, a 3G and now a 3G S. There is a speed difference with the S version.

Lots of Kool Aid...

I have frustrations here and there, but overall it is a great device. The app store alone is worth the cost of admission. And it is a very capable phone on top of that.

Separate charge is for text messages. If you <3 texting (LOL) then you probably want it. If you don't, then OMG don't waste your money! Like....

I have a college aged daughter so.....

I love my Iphone, I get a bit of a discount ( 15-20%) because of where my wife works. It's still pricey though because myself, the wife and my son all have one. The son bought his phone and I paid for the service for him as a x-mas present.

Supposedly pretty easy. Just download the SDK from the Apple site and have at it.

Hmmm....

Would be cool if I could get email tunes from a company like Diablo or Brenspeed and use the phone to upload the files to the car.

A quality CAI for the Mustang requires a new tune.

As it is now, you have to buy a $300 scan tool to do that. Somebody ought to be able to make that work.

Brian,

This article is from October prior to the release of the DROID and written by a self-proclaimed iPhone hobbyist so him giving the DROID a win is pretty good. Many of the iPhone evangelists that wrote those early reviews only had the early release of the DROID and Android OS to quickly check out prior to writing thier articles. Back in October and November there were all kinds of wacky articles flying from both camps. I haven't done the searches lately but I bet there are a lot fewer reviews all together pitting the DROID against the iPhone. Android OS will be out on many new devices in the coming months, so DROID is not the only game in town.

Just another note: There has been two OS updates since November and soon Adobe will be releasing a true Flash player for Android OS

stopped by another Verizon Wireless store last night, mostly to see if they could access the home bill, which they couldn't

Took another look at the Droid

He also showed me another phone that's due out Tuesday, the Devour

The keyboard seemed WAY better than the Droid, as did the case (aluminum). I couldn't check out the screen since he can't activate it till Tuesday.

I'll let you know what I think about it then.

The wife and I can get new phones from Verizon the 23rd of this month (we're on the two year contract deal). There are two new phones rumured to be out any time for Verizon - the HTC Incredible and the HTC Nexus 1. Both feature Android 2.1, OLED screens and 1 Ghz CPU's (although they have the same CPU the Incredible will be clocked a bit slower at 700/800mhz).

I'm thinking I'll pick up whichever one hit's the store first. Rumor is both the Motorola Droid and HTC Eris are to be discontinued shortly.

Who knows for sure though.

The Nexus 1 is supposed to be a great device. If its better than my DROID (which its supposed to improve on), it will be pretty incredible itself.

We were near the Verizon store last weekend so we checked out some phones. I was blown away with the Motorola Droid - I had read a lot of reviews and many prefer the HTC Eris over the Motorola Droid but after playing with them side by side the Droid was amazing - I didn't think I would be nearly as impressed as I was. I was set on the Eris but, if I had to choose today it would definitely be the Droid.

The leaps in technology with every subsequent generation of phone is nothing short of amazing.

I actually prefer the smaller size of the Eris which I expected to be the biggest difference between the two. The Eris runs Android 1.5 where the Droid runs 2.1. The difference between the two OS's was the biggest factor to me. I didn't expect the two OS's to be that different but they seemed like two completely different phones.
