I'm getting ready to change headers and I want a way to separate the headers from the exhaust system. The headers are TPIS slip joint.
I was curious as to how many of you use a butt joint band clamp to connect the collector to the cat. I've ordered a couple of Walker butt joint clamps to give it a try. Just curious as to how well this will work. Thanks Mike |

I tried some of those overlapping band clamps, and wasn't thrilled with them. I've been tempted to try the V-Band clamps - they're spendy but look like they'd work well.

Thanks Brad These Walkers are pretty strong. I've used them before and was impressed. How wide are those V band's, you know? |

Not sure, but they look fairly narrow:

Hummmm maybe someone else has used them and can chime in. And that is for a butt joint......Looks kind of skinny to me.

I just used one of the Summit brand (band clamps) on the section where the rear of the Y pipe slides into the Cat Convertor. It stopped the leak and made for a very solid connection. The Summit and Walker band clamps are about 3" long so you have plenty to cover the joint...WW

Those v-band clamps aren't for a butt joint - you have to weld some flanges on each piece, and the v-band clamp holds them together.

Cats? who runs cats anymore
I used the wider band clamps for awhile before I had butt joints welded on both parts. They were ok, no leaks or anything. But I don't know that I'd call them a permanent solution. |

I'd still recommend going the exhaust shop and having flanges welded into place........

Sorry. The slip joint was not easy to separate after two years. It did though. I guess I will not be using the v-bands either if welding is required. I hope the Walkers work for you. Do you have a part number?

Yeah that probably would be the best solution until I had to remove the headers later for one reason or the other. Then I'd have to get it welded again. I guess I could cut the exhaust pipe further back and then use the clamps. I'm still thinking on it. |

O.K., I have 6 of those on my car, 2@ the header slip joint, 2@ the rear y-pipe slip joint, and 2@ the welded butt joints on the cat "test pipe". I don't think I would use them on a "floating" butt joint because of strength/leakage issues.

Actually the ones I had used before were thicker than these and were not polished SS. About the same quality SS as the OE system is made of. These are thicker then they look though and made for butt joints not overlapping joints. The overlapping type are very thin so they will conform to the two different size pipes. We'll see... |

The overlapping clamps are available in straight and "i.d./o.d." configurations. Please post your results, I may be in a similar situation when I go to true duals.
Oh, and those cutouts are boss. |

That's more or less exactly what I used. Still have one on the driver side. They're fine, but certainly not as good as a weld. |

EM sends thouse WALKER brand (about 3" wide) band clamps with their long tube header's and off road pipe/extension kits. I'll admit that my 92 still uses the clamps on the header collector to off road pipe/extension joint (where your cat would be). They don't leak but I'm waiting for a problem (and hence an excuse) to replace them with a ball and socket connector.

ive been using the walker/summit butt joint stainless band clamps for years, with as much as an inch separating the pipes depending on how big a POS the car was and i have never had issue with them. the flange from cat to the h pipe on my beater crown vic rusted so i cut it out and put on one of those clamps 2 years ago bridging the inch or so gap. no leaks.

My Dynatech V clamps are brand new and they lock so tight they need a tap with a soft hammer to crack the clamp loose The band clamps work great for a straight connection but I found they will not support any twisting moment. I had them behind my glass paks ( which exit at diff )as a quick release for my street mufflers ( two seperate pipes w/ mufflers ) but they still allowed the mufflers to rotate out of position regardless of how tight they were |
