I did this back in Sept.
I was looking into the Greenwood hood louver kit and would have spent over $1k with paint. I wasn't sure I wanted to cut up my hood either.
The '84 crossfire air feed gave me an idea to utilize the hood ducting.
The project involved cutting two 4" dia. holes in the hood ducts, twelve 1 1/4" holes in the back edge of the hood and blocking the ducts with closed cell foam at the hood lights and the top cross duct to prevent water infiltration and also, incorporating a drain system.
It works, too. The ducts are directly above the headers.
Water is not a problem. Engine fumes are not a problem. (I did a Rube Goldberg using mothballs to test this).
As far as venting, the heat can be felt escaping at idle.
I taped some ribbons to the cowl and would say that up to about 40mph the heat is vented out. At speeds above that air is pushed into the engine compartment.

absolutely brilliant!

I love it! And at speeds over 40mph, who cares??? there will be more than enough air flow, it's for the low speed stuff where you need it.

Excellent!!!!

I saw this in person at the last show and it looks great, like it should have been there from the factory. Lots of little neat changes and mods in Joe's car like that.

Thanks, it works out 15 sq. in. of vent. Not astronomical, but it's in the right place and helps.

That was one of the selling points on my Toledo Pro hood. It has venting to the cowl as well. Interesting read on teh 40mph thing, I never gave a thought to that. How did you test that? I'd like to test my hood and see what it does.

DIY aero test. Ribbons taped to the edge of the hood fluttered on the windshield up to about 40 when they crawled down into the cowl recess.
