Earlier today, I was reading my copy of Sports Car Market. Great mag!

However, they review collector cars from all walks of life that go through auctions. They also have an extensive database of cars that have been sold in the past.

I was thinking to myself, wouldn't it have been neat to be able to order your Corvette your way in 1967.

So I came up with this:

1967 Coupe, Marlboro Maroon
Tan leather seats
Head rests
Shoudler belts
Tinted glass (all)
Power windows
AirCon
Heavy Duty Brakes & Suspension
Power steering and brakes
390hp 427
4sp manual
36 gallon fuel tank
tele steering column
cast aluminum bolt on rims
red line tires
am-fm radio
Transister ignition
Posi rear, with 3.08:1 gears

A fully prepped up road car. One for the loooonnngggg haul. Retail is about $6,762.35.

So I figured, in a perfect world. I would own this car for 40+ years, saving every piece of paper, every bill, every reciept, creating a detailed history along the way.

Then comes the day I decide to sell, and put it on auction at Barrett Jackson in Scotsdale or Mecum at Corvettes @ Carlisle or Bloomington Gold.

Figure, the car was DRIVEN, maybe sympathetically fixed up in the early 90s (new paint, maintenance work).

At this point, I am figuring a car like this would be a time warp machine and could be worth north of $200k.

If you want to guarentee money, buy this:

1967 coupe
red with black int
L88
Transistor ignition
Redline tires
heavy duty brakes and suspension
M21 heavy duty 4spd manual
Posi rear (4.11:1)
Side pipes
36 gal tank

$6,723.25

That would be worth $200k or more.

That led me to special order my 1992 all over again:

LT1/6spd (ZR1 out of my price point and in hind sight, in 1992, I might have been able to eek out this Vette).
Manual AC
Z07 package
Either base cloth
Either polo green or black rose
Base Delco stereo

That would be a wierd one! Now, 20 years on, if I HAD bought it in 1992, it would have on it some 320k miles on it!!!

$35,680.00

Discuss.

I sometimes think back to if I had access to money and any car in the past. My list is very long, but being a Corvette nut...

...I would buy a 1969 Corvette ZL-1.

I just want a mid-year convertible...any year, any option, any color. Then I'd restomod it. Not to sell it, but to drive it

I have fantasies too. Oddly they rarely involve cars. I have never custom ordered a car nor would I because I'm too cheap to pay full retail for anything. I look to the discount corner. So I guess the car that's marked down 10 grand has all the options I want and need.

What Matt said! I think we are getting real close to being able to build an LS engined mid year without a lot of original Chevy parts. That's my dream build.

First you had to trudge through the waist deep snow, barefoot, for miles, just to get to the bus that would take you to your job. It was a different time.

I started working in 1969, making $1.10 per hour. One hour's pay was enough for a few gallons of gas, but a new Corvette would've taken a while to pay for ;-)

1968. First real job I had was at a Taxi garage with 26 cabs. Gas them, oil them, wash them as needed at PM shift change. Worked from 3:00 to 6:00 or 7:00 PM. A whopping $1.25 an hr. After two years I moved to another job at min wage because the cab company owner refused me a .25 cent raise. That was a with a cabbie that opened a mobile car washing business. I helped to grow that company. Started at $1.65 left at $3.50 He offered me a partnership but I moved on to become a dump truck driver for a paving company. In 1973 I was making $4.00 an hour. Took home $120 a week. That was pretty good money then for an 18 y/o. Because of some patriotic yearning I left that job to join the Air Force. My bi weekly pay was $126.00 before taxes and deductions. I remained poor for the next 5 years. Now I need to look at prices of fuel vs income but at a glance fuel is 10 times more expensive now than then, while income was about 6.5 times when I retired. Now it's even less for me since I make about 2/3rds what I made when i was working. The good thing is that now I drive a lot less. To put all this back on topic. A Corvette was out of my spending range till I was in my 40's and even then all I could afford was a C4. I could afford to buy a 2012 ZR1 but there isn't enough room to fit all my belongings into it. I imagine living and sleeping in a WalMart parking lot would get tiresome at some point. At least I'd get some nice compliments on my car.

Damn it, Andy.

I think about this car at least once a week. Woulda, coulda, shoulda. I could have bought it in 1984 but I was broke, headed for a new job in Reno and already had a '67 coupe.

I was thinking to myself, wouldn't it have been neat to be able to order your Corvette your way in 1967.

So I came up with this:

1967 Coupe, Marlboro Maroon
Tan leather seats
Head rests
Shoudler belts
Tinted glass (all)
Power windows
AirCon
Heavy Duty Brakes & Suspension
Power steering and brakes
390hp 427
4sp manual
36 gallon fuel tank
tele steering column
cast aluminum bolt on rims
red line tires
am-fm radio
Transister ignition
Posi rear, with 3.08:1 gears

Except Remove:
390hp 427
36 gallon tank

And add:
400hp 427, 3 duces
sidepipes
NCRS Top Flight Cert.
24,000 miles

A fully prepped up road car. One for the loooonnngggg haul. Retail is about $6,762.35.

So I figured, in a perfect world. I would own this car for 40+ years, saving every piece of paper, every bill, every reciept, creating a detailed history along the way.

So, I coulda had my Marlboro Maroon coupe for $10,000

But for $3,000, 37 years later I still have this one. And someday it will be back together.

Wait...! There are Corvette clubs and they don't have snotty, Zaino applying owners? How is (was?) this possible?

On those monsters you guys are putting together...isn't that much engine over the front wheels kinda heavy? Wouldn't the 327 be a more nimble car? (If available, not sure)

And in 1978, working at a gas station, making $5.00/hr. Not bad, living at home, financing college those summers! Not enough to buy any Corvette, but a sweet 68 Camaro convertible...ya!!

Zaino didn't exist then.

I have to admit, some of the new Corvette owners are pretty snooty. I also resent when a new, box stock Vette wins ANYTHING. What have they done? Proven they can afford to spend $$?

The 427's had different front coil springs (thicker dia.)
The 327's had the base springs and the F41 springs which were stiffer and lowered the car.

Horrors, no Zaino? Just Wine and cheese? Well, ok, the Miata clubs do wine and cheese, tech sessions are few and far between...but the Vette crowd I've encountered is just about the Zaino and the underhood murals...and truly, how much money they've spent on the C6 and who they paid to install the stuff...Pride is in the amount of stuff, not what they accomplished themselves with their own set of skills. The skillset involved is the amount of money made available to throw at the car while sipping their favorite beverage in the waiting lounge. Really! Two corvette club meetings and that's what I got out of it.

So, the 327 with the stiffer springs and lowered chassis; would that have lent itself to better handling?

Not that the car described by Andy wouldn't be making big bucks in Scottsdale!

At least Don's club autocrosses.
The Reno club could be called Zaino Corvettes. When I was in it, they autocrosssed and had a huge show every year. Now they have a BBQ and attend other people's shows.

Yea, the F41 package was all about handling, F&R springs were stiffer, and stiffer sway bars.

I still think a lot about that Marlboro Maroon, just didn't have the bucks at the time.

Wow... this thread sure went downhill quick! LOL
Bunch of Profiling Stereotypcasters... you all are!

Bill's pictures look like they were all taken through a screen door! with work I could make them look like new again, but I'm a snooty Corvette Club guy that only waxes his car with Zaino and drinks wine and cheese while we park outside the polo fields of Potomac, MD !!!

However... the reality for the majority of my membership is..

We have a pretty diverse group of guys and all the opportunity in the world to be snotty, coming largely from the snottiest county in the United States (Montgomery County and Potomac area of the DC/MD suburbs) But... I think we remain pretty inclusive and over the past three years as President I have made that one of my primary goals. Since I am of humble Corvette background myself, I try to really make this club accepting of newcomers. Oh and I have six members at Watkins Glen this week representing us while racing in one of the Chin motorsport activities. We have more racers and wrenchers than waxers I think. I don't know too many of my guys that even use Zaino! HA HA! To prove that point I got Adam's coming to my show in June!!

I know that there are clubs that seem snotty to people and probably are, but I think that all people are very similar in nature and if these (snotty club members) are not gregarious or assertive they have a hard time approaching and welcoming new people. What's worse, is when you have a somewhat introverted person coming to a Corvette Club function where everyone has known each other for umteen years and those people have a hard time breaking the ice with new people (introverts), it can be disastrous. It can be very intimidating for the newcomer trying to break the ice with a new crowd of people. This is not only prevalent in Corvette Clubs but all social organizations I have belonged to over the years. I have been President of three organizations over the past 25 years and I had similar issues in all. I hope to break these barriers when I take Obama's position in a couple years!!

So... the moral of the story is that we are not all butt heads... just some of us. Love you guys!

When it comes to newcomers I am always one of those that introduce myself and welcome them letting them know to take as much or as little of an orginization as you want. I've never been a social butterfly. Probably because I prefer the company of animals to the company of people. Animals are more loyal.

BigGriz, it may be stereotyping in some worlds, but if that's the only experience one makes, then one views that as to how those particular groups act. It is like that not only with Corvette guys though.

In particular nasty are the members that cozy up but are looking over your shoulder in case there is someone more important that they have to schmooze up.
*********************************

Anyway, I'm not so sure about that nose heavy Corvette with the 427. I'm thinking that it is going to be along the lines of the Cobra where the big block was front heavy but the 289 was much more maneuverable??

Oh, also what was the purpose of the large fuel tanks outside of distance between fills considering the mileage these cars got. And why are they in such demand today as rare pieces?

Your correct that is stereotyping and that is the same definition in all worlds. As I was reading the responses about how Corvette Club people behave I was stereotyping many of my Corvette Brethren on Corvette Forum... tons of those trolls over there! See now... I'm doing it! LOL

Well, I gotta go off to a Corvette Club Meeting. I got to be there at 6:30 for planning of the June 4th Car Show! So much to do... So little time.

Oh, also what was the purpose of the large fuel tanks outside of distance between fills considering the mileage these cars got. And why are they in such demand today as rare pieces?

IIRC, the 427 was about 100 lbs., and yea, the small blocks were more nimble.

The tank cars are rare, especially in what Andy has set for options.
The 36 gal. was an option for the racers, came out of the real Grand Sports.
It also ate up most of the luggage space for a daily driver.

The clubs in Pa., Md. and Virginia were all active clubs (back when I was involved).
The Reno clun really went waxer and it's a shame.

The pics are from the Mason-Dixon Club, we were really active, had large shows, had Duntov come in and in 83, Dave Mc came in with pics og the new C4 that hardly anyone in the U.S. had seen.

BTW, I also found some more crappy pics of MDCC at Chip Miller's house for his annual BBQ. I'l post them soon.

How's this for a fantasy purchase? A guy shows up at our show with this. He paid $1,200 for it!

Jeez, that looks like Harley Earl's car! Gotta lose the Keystones, though ;-)

Yea, no shit. The guy only owned it for 3 days when he brought it to our show. We knew it was something special.
Just think - $1,200.

Corvette has always been a status symbol. It made a statement about you. Some folks take that to the extreme. I was always interested in the performance but you can get that in a Rambler if you spend enough money. I do enjoy the thumbs up and the smiles and waves as I am cruising low on a warm summer night. I think everyone does.

I have always enjoyed having something cool to drive and go fast in and I want to hang with others who like the same things. The owners I relate to are the blue collar types who have worked hard to get their cars and have worked hard on the cars because they did not have a lot of extra bucks. That's the Vette owners I enjoy being around and I can tell the other kind real fast. I enjoy talking to all types and like the fact that we all enjoy a great American car.

I actually did order a new 1967 Corvette (sorta). I was drafted into the U S Army on May 7, 1967. Left my 65 black vert (white interior, black top, 300hp 327, 4-speed, AM/FM radio) at home in Michigan with my 19 y/o sister.
While in basic training at Ft Knox, Kentucky I signed up for Officer Candidate School to be an Armor 2nd Lieutenant. This would have bumped my monthly pay from $60+ to $300+ when I graduated.
They let us off base for a weekend and I managed to get to a Chevrolet dealer in Louisville, KY where I specced out this: 1967 yellow vert, 427 with 4 barrel carb (can't remember but probably the low HP one), 4 speed, black interior, black stinger hood, AM/FM radio and (I think) power steering and power brakes, side pipes, posi rear end and probably something in the 3:70/1 rear gear range. Seems like the total price was somewhere in the neighborhood of $5,300 and they would give me what I owed on the 65 (pending seeing it in person). Financing that for 36 months would have given me enough left over each month to pay for gas, insurance and beer money!
I ended up changing my mind about OCS though and ended up eventually becoming a lowly Spec 4 clerk so I never did buy the 67. Probably would have ended up dead in Vietnam or dead in the Vette drinking and driving so I guess I made out all right!
Thinking about this some more right now, that $5,300 price seems awful high. Not really sure what it was now(can't remember squat!)

I am SURE it was the 427/390, cause you can't get PS/PB with the L88.

The Vette you spec'd out is very similar to the Vette I did, and mine would have totaled $6,762.35!

I saw a similar one at VnC Corvettes in Phoenix a few years back. It was dk green with white interior. And was pretty well equipped. However, VnC never impressed me with their ethics... and I felt the car wasn't as advertized.

Andy .... Are you looking to fulfil a fantasy? If you looked really hard you just might be able to do it by simply adding a zero. $67,623.50

I know the 67's were/are supposed to be the cats meow, but I, for whatever reason prefer the 66.

My dream Corvette is the 66 Marina blue roadster with white interior, white soft top and matching hardtop, 427/390, four speed, PS, PB, PW, AC.

About a month after selling my 64 coupe, I ran across a 66 BB roadster very similar to the one I described for $4000...probably would have bought it, if I'd seen the ad a couple hours earlier, but I was too late.

Find a wrecked one, restore it. You have too many "after retirement" jobs lined up anyway.

If that car is what it claims to be, it is worth twice the current $65k bid.

It looks exactly like my brothers 67 L71. I need to find a pic of that.

If the NCRS stuff is correct, it's a very good buy. Cars like this on ebay need realtime inspection by a pro.

Thers's a boatload of non-origional bigblocks out there.
