If I had this car, I'd build a barn in my backyard, and stack junk on top of it (carefully). That would be fun to show your friends.

Ya, it's better to leave it dusty. It covers up the 30 years of neglect.

$50,000 is ludicrous. Also a shame not to enjoy it. I saw a 78 pace car at a body shop where I know the guys about 2 weeks ago. Same story, guy bought it in 78, parked it in his garage untouched since then. 44 miles on it. Still had the window sticker attached, too. The valve covers were rusted on and it needed a ton of clean up work...hence being at the body shop. Owner wants to sell it. I don't expect more than 30 tops, I think closer to 25.

The bad part is that 78 Vette's are bottom feeders when it comes to quality control... the paint sucks, they are simply not that well put together, and aren't really all that fast.

A friend of mine has one, same deal, bought new, parked it. It has some ungodly low mileage, like 20. All from on and off the trailer to shows. That's as far as it goes.

And it's constantly detailed... and the paint is absolute rubbish!

A barn fine has less value when there are tons of very low mileage 1978 Pace Cars that were taken care of. This is an L82 (that's the relatively good engine for you "new" Corvette folks) but it is an automagic.

The build quality was horrendous and you have to remember this when judging these cars. There's no deducting for filed front fenders, because they did that to try and make them line up with the front bumpers. There's no deducting for screws sitting impregnated in the windshield liner, because that happened enough to be "typical factory production". There's no deducting for paint application issues, because they all had issues. Etc., etc., etc.

In spite of this, they are appealing cars - I wouldn't buy one, but I like to see them. Low mileage throws the normal values out the door: if he finds the right person I could see him selling it for $26k to $36k.

46,776 produced in 78 and 53,807 in 79. That's ramming them out the door.......on the old St. Louis production line. I had a almost new 79 which I really enjoyed back then but quality wasn't a big issue with me back then or power either I guess.....it did have the L82 and a 4 speed though.

May be 46,xxx 1978s produced, but IIRC only like 502 of the Pace cars?

With all the quality control issues, I still love the looks of the 78 Pace car. I would love to own one, but not at those prices.....

I remember in 1978 when I was still in college, we drove past the local Chevy dealer and there was a transport truck there with about 8 or 9 Pace cars on it. Well, I just had to stop and find out what was going on. One of the salesmen told me that these were all bought by the same guy who was going to store them away for "investment purposes". Apparently he had bought every one he could get his hands on.....paying a 'premium' for them. IIRC the guy was some big Texas oil man.

@TB.....I was heading to Manhattan in my 77 and I found a Pace at Beloit in a small dealership.....It was not for sale and the guy told me he had been offerered 35K for it.....he should have sold it......lol.......I did get to crawl all over it checking it out. The seats were cool and the paint job....this one had an L82 and the 4 speed....I was wanting it bad.

As I once read about this vintage Corvette... "Congrats, it has original paint. Bummer, it has original paint.

There are few restored 1978 Pace Cars, but most that are restored constantly get dinged for over-restoration on their paint. It's hard to pay someone a lot of money to do a fairly bad paint job ...

That's right, there was like 1 built for each of the Chevy dealers in the country....or something like that.

Tom is correct. 1978 Pace Cars are really the first Corvettes to be bought and immediately put away in significant numbers.

L82 and four speed combination will definitely get out of it's own way. Road & Track got a 1979 to do:

0-60: 6.6 seconds
1/4 mile: 15.3 seconds at 95 mph
top speed: 132 mph

- that's moving in the late 1970s.

I agree but for those of us that had just lived thru the 60's and early 70's it was not so much.....

Day's Chevrolet nearby in Acworth, GA has a 1978 pace car in their showroom, never even titled. First time I saw it was about 5 years ago and it was shiny and clean and had never even been out of the showroom. Then last year they brought it out for a Corvette show in their parking lot. Whoever was assigned to detail it for the show was a lazy idiot and apparently washed it with a brush. I am sure you can imagine what the paint looks like now.
