They are the America of the industrial revolution but with more people/production and no hope of oversight.

Reminds me of when I went to a race at Riverside in '77 - they had some nasty air out there back in the day.

One of the reasons they can make things so cheap over there.

They don't have the same environmental regulations.

Not good seeing we share the same atmosphere.

A lot of ignorance on the board today...not usual for the guru.

Consider that while they are clearly lax (compared to basically the US and western Europe only) in environmental controls, it is the enabled by the rest of the world. Go ahead and try to NOT buy something made in China today. Then tell me you'd pay more for it if the workers' conditions were better and the company took better care of the environment.

Do I condone it? Of course not. But thank the lottery of birth for your own situation, as opposed to turning your nose up and belittling them.

I wasn't belittling them... I was showing how bad our air would be without our regulations.

Sad how they have driven industry away, but that is absolutely ridiculous.

Hhhmmm. I did win the lottery, didn't I.

I didn't belittle them. They've been know to copy exsisting technology for decades. The US were no angels on the pollution front. Tree hugging hippies helped to change all that.

Dr. Ron Paul and his ilk say they aren't worried about trade deficits because buying Chinese stuff saves us money. If they want to artificially lower prices on their goods then we have more money in our pockets. In other words, buying everything from a 3rd world country and producing nothing here is good for us?

This feels completely wrong to me yet I can't quite figure out why.

Americans don't want to do manufacturing jobs. Physical labor. Work with their hands. We're above that, entitled to a better life. Right?

China is not "pinko commies" anymore. If anything, I would describe it as the dictionary difinition of capitalism. The money is there for the taking by anyone who can come up with a product other people want. There are no restrictions (comparitively speaking) by the government to regulate monopolies, environmental impact, etc. The strong survive and flourish, the weak work 16 hour days in conditions that would give OSHA cops a heart attack. There is also an appalling lack of respect for intellectual property. One of the things that enables this is the need for western companies to get in there and make big bucks fast, regardless of the cost long term (like giving up our technology).

They only have had 30 years to catch up to the western world's technology and standard of living. Their bartering chip is manpower. There are a LOT of hands to do the work we won't. Moral ground is not in the picture yet, making money and improving your and your children's life is the priority.

And as for the fake goods, it is certainly a fault of the goverment that this is allowed to happen, but let's be clear. It is NOT chinese people who buy fake purses, golf clubs, and watches. It is westerners that fund this market.

Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely proud of our country and have had many opportunities to take foreign assignments (including China) and have declined. I want to live HERE (yeah, Detroit, bitches!) But old stereotypes are outdated, the world moves at a much faster pace these days...

My employer is a world-wide Corporation that has sales/service offices and even a small factory (For Chinese domestic market only) in China. I know our Chinese GM very well.... he says the "only" reason to manufacture in China is Cheap Labor. No other reason... he says its a logistics nightmare over there from the point of finding reliable Supplier lines.

I've never talked to him about Pollution regulations, but I guess it must be pretty lax considering that amazing picture.

As a note, I am involved with the AMT (Association of Manufacturing Technology) they are well aware of the difficulty in getting young talent into the Manufacturing Industry. Most young Engineers are heading into IT and Software related jobs simply because they feel they have done a poor job of selling the Manufacturing Industry. They in conjunction with SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) are creating a host of propoganda video's that are designed to entice the young grads back into the Manufacturing industry by putting a youthful spin and glamour look to the Market. They previewed one at an AMT/AMTDA Conference recently.... was pretty good. Don't know if it will work though. But, as a country, we really need it too. Manufacturing in this country starts and ends with young Tech Engineers devoting their careers to it. Right now, its almost impossible to find talent in this industry.

I read more about it today... apparently, the issue is the gas they are using is junk... and even with the best emission controls, it still stinks up the place.
