Only if it swallowed up part of the track. Sinkholes are a Florida phenomenon too.

Museum officials say the sink hole destroyed eight Corvettes.

· 1993 ZR-1 Spyder on loan from General Motors
· 2009 ZR1 "Blue Devil" on loan from General Motors

The other six vehicles were owned by the National Corvette Museum including:
· 1962 Black Corvette
· 1984 PPG Pace Car
· 1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette
· 1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette
· 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette
· 2009 White 1.5 Millionth Corvette

I'm with VB... I just got an email from the NCM... shocking...

I didn't know that part of the country was prone to sink holes, and I would have thought testing would have shown the area was iffy.

I am sure insurance will deal with most of this.

I'd hate to be their agent... and given that sinkhole gave way... what's the chance that disrupted stability and might there be another?

National Corvette Museum eNews
SPECIAL EDITION
Sinkhole Collapses in Skydome

We received a call at 5:44am from our security company alerting us of our motion detectors going off in our Skydome area of the Museum. Upon arrival it was discovered that a sinkhole had collapsed within the Museum. No one was in or around the Museum at the time. The Bowling Green Fire Department arrived on the scene and secured the area. The Fire Department has estimated the size of the hole is 40 feet across and 25-30 feet deep.

It is with heavy hearts that we report that eight Corvettes were affected by this incident.

Those cars include:

1993 ZR-1 Spyder on loan from General Motors
2009 ZR1 “Blue Devil” on loan from General Motors

The other six vehicles were owned by the National Corvette Museum including:

1962 Black Corvette
1984 PPG Pace Car
1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette
1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette
2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette
2009 White 1.5 Millionth Corvette

None of the cars affected were on loan from individuals. The Skydome exhibit area of the Museum is a separate structure connected to the main Museum. A structural engineer is now on-site to assess the existing damage and stability of the surrounding areas. The Museum is closed to the public for the day to allow us to carefully assess the situation. We will keep everyone informed as we know more.

With the 20th Anniversary celebration, Grand Opening of the NCM Motorsports Park, and the National Corvette Caravan coming August 27-30, we’ve got a lot to be excited about in 2014, and look forward to getting the Skydome repaired and reopened very soon.

Thanks to all of our Corvette friends and family for you words of prayer and support.

The black 62 should be savable......if they can figure out how to hook up to it.......someone was probably tunneling in underneath the structure to steal all the cars and it went very wrong......it would make an interesting TV show anyway......

Corvette Museum Media Alert
Sinkhole Update #2

In our effort to continue to provide up to date information...

The National Corvette Museum will be open beginning Thursday, February 13 for tours. The Skydome portion of the tour will be closed to the public. The Museum is open daily, 8am-5pm CT and is located at I-65 exit 28.

The structural engineering firm did determine that the perimeter of the Skydome is stable. We have worked with our insurance adjustor to retain Scott, Murphy and Daniel as our construction manager and they will be coordinating all work moving forward.

All cars that were on display in the Museum's Skydome not affected by the sinkhole have been safely removed.

As an update, photos of the sinkhole, cars that were affected (before the collapse), and readerboard information on each car can be viewed and downloaded here.

Video footage, including surveillance footage of the sinkhole collapse, helicopter drone footage inside the sinkhole and more are on our You Tube channel here.

Those wishing to make financial contributions to the Museum may do so on our website here.

This might end up being the best thing to ever happen to the museum...

1. None of the cars are total scratches, I am sure they can be cosmetically repaired for show, if desired.

2. The PR has been amazing! There was a print story in the business section of the LA Times today, and a bit on the local NBC 4 news about the sink hole.

This is sad new with upside... it gains sympathies, it will inform a lot of people to the existence of the museum who knew nothing about it before - non-Corvete folks... it can also help put Corvette owners in a good light, too (the rally around the dome thing).

I don't see this is as bad... I see this is as ultimately good. The best part? Let the story tell itself, there is no need to spin it. The NCM was the innocent victim of Momma Nature...

Today construction crews have been working hard! They are creating anchoring points for the crane to safely anchor to. In order of the crane to maneuver into position the pedestal for the 1983 Corvette had to be removed. Very sad to see this come down, but excited to see the changes/recovery coming up!

The blue devil looks nearly undamaged from this angle.

Considering they may never be driven again, if the rest of the car appears this good, they may not have to do more than a wash and wax...

That may just be one dodged bullet... says something for the chassis on these cars, eh?

Email blast from the Museum:

Crowds of construction personnel, media, Museum visitors and staff cheered as the first Corvette, the 2009 "Blue Devil" ZR1 emerged from the depths of the sinkhole this morning at approximately 10:35am CT. The process was streamed live on two of the Museum's web cams with thousands of viewers tuning in all over the world.

"It's wonderful... just seven more to go," said Mike Murphy, construction manager for the project.

Even more cheers erupted when the car cranked up after only a few tries, and even drove about 20 feet to the doorway of the Skydome.

"That's a GM product for you. They take a licking and keep on ticking!" added Murphy.

The crews have been working six days a week since the sinkhole incident that swallowed eight Corvettes in the National Corvette Museum's Skydome exhibit area. This past Saturday, the crews rigged up the ZR1 and did a few test lifts. John Spencer, Manufacturing Integration Manager at the GM Corvette Assembly Plant, helped consult the team on the best points to strap up the car. "With Mike, worker safety is number one. There are no compromises," said Spencer.

"I was worried about the wheels," said Murphy. "This morning we took so long because we wanted to add some secondary straps in case the wheels pulled. It was just a little more insurance."

Murphy added that with this project, nothing is set in stone on how to do it. "It's been a huge relief. It went better than expected," he said.

After the elation of the first car being rescued and even cranking up, the Museum staff were excited to put the car back on display in the Museum's Exhibit Hall. "It's incredible to have the car back on display again. It's what we've been hoping for," said Bob Hellmann, Facilities and Displays Manager. "Now we just want to get the next seven, restore the cars, and get them all back on display."

The Museum plans on displaying the cars as they are recovered, now through August 3. In addition, this Spring they plan to create a special display with information on the sinkhole incident, sinkholes and karst background details, videos, photos and more.

After taking a lunch break, the crew will resume the car retrieval process - with the 1993 "Ruby Red" 40th Anniversary Corvette slated for recovery Monday afternoon.

The 1962 Black Corvette is planned to be retrieved on Tuesday, but will be much trickier as a five ton slab of concrete is partially resting on the front of the car. Two cranes will be used to simultaneously lift the car and the concrete.

Links to photos, videos and press releases are available on the Museum's website at www.corvettemuseum.org. For the latest updates visit the Museum’s Facebook Fan page at www.facebook.com/corvettemuseum.

Here is the PPG Pace car. Evidently it went in first. I took these in March 2013 when I visited last.

The pace car and the 1 millionth really took bad hits. I am looking forward to seeing the after restoration photos. I hope GM takes some pictures during the restoration process as well.
