What size gears are you guys running in your cars? I would like to know what size is under my car, and what would be a good low gear for me. I have 3.73's in my 93 Cobra. Is that to low for a stock rear end in a vette (auto)? Also if I wanted to stroke my car to a 383 what kit should I get and if anyone here has done it (I know there is) tell me what all you have done. If you have a Carb. or Fuel Injection still, What heads should I get and so on. Bogus and me talked and I just wanted to here other peoples thoughts.

Automatic or manual? This is fundamental. Also, what are your goals and main purposes for the car? My built 388 LT1 is an automatic and is foremost a daily driver. But also, it's sometimes drag raced and auto-crossed for fun. I use a 3000 stall converter with 3.07 gears and wouldn't think of going any lower. It launches like a bear at the strip with proper tires and still gets very good mileage on the highway.

Stock 3.45's on my LT4

I've thought about 3.73's from time to time, but I'm quite happy with my stock gearing.

Next project is getting 4.56's

LT1 with automatic? I wouldn't listen to anyone that doesn't have that exact combo.

L98 needs less gear than LT1, and manual needs more gear than an auto.

My 93 LT1 A4 had the stock 2.59's, my first change went all the way to 3.73's. Those seem a little too steep for the street to me, probably perfect for a drag car. I now have 3.45's and like them a lot, great launch and still decent on the Interstate.

I'm so used to my 0.50 overdrive that I would go nuts in an automatic vette.

To each his own, but 75 to 80 % of Corvette buyers choose an automatic.

Currently my 86 (factory TPI) has a Dana 44 with 3.73 gears.
The rear will be changed to a solid axle spooled 4.56, when I replace the motor (carb'ed 434).

My 94 LT1 has 3.33:1, but since youre asking about size, im led to believe its 8.5 inch.

Did i see somewhere about putting a carby on a 92?? Are you out of your mind??

Yeah but the gear spread just doesn't compare. So you choose a rear end that gets you a low 1st gear or a tall overdrive, but you can't have both.

No argument there, two less gears to choose from.

I don't agree with 75% of Corvette owners choosing automatics, true, 75% of Corvettes are automatics(C4 Generation anyway), I think it's more of the damn dealers ordering the cars that way. Someone walks in and wants a vette that day, the dealer says we can order you a six speed and wait 6 weeks or you can drive an automatic off the lot today.

Anyway, to answer the original question, my '93 came with 2.59 gears and I later switched to 3.45's which seem to be ideal for street and strip.

If demand for manuals was high they would be dominate the floor plan. Like the manufacturer who builds them, dealers only order what sells, but I do agree with your choice of gears!

Most of us didn't buy our C4s new. They were bought by someone older, wealthier, lazier, with a nagging wife, and they wanted an automatic.

But yeah, the demand for manual used C4s is higher than autos. Probably well beyond 50%. Combine that with the 25% supply of manuals and you get a demand driven price difference. Not to mention the small % putting manuals in their auto vettes.

hi there guys,
sorry for butting in on your thread, but with a 6 speed is 3.45 ratio which i currently have a good alrounder for street/stip use mainly for trafic light to light racing ??
this 388 c.i engine im building up with the 8 throttle bodies apparently is a good alround speed intake.
it would be great not to have to upgrade and spend the $$$ to either a 3.73,3.90 or 4.10 thats all.
cheers

I wanted a six speed and I got it, but I wanted an automatic the second time and I got it.

The last two new cars I bought I wanted a manual and the dealers told me no way I could even get one even though they were an option.

On my Silverado, right on the window sticker it said," Automatic Transmission-Standard $895.

If it's standard, why are they charging me, then they give a discount if you happen to get a manual trans.

I hate automatic transmissions, I really do, but I'm stuck with 4 out of 5 cars with them.

Not many Mercs can be had with a manual either Frank, but then when it comes to autos, Mercedes Benz autos are without question the best you can get. Any automatic can be manually shifted anyway.

Glen, id just stay with what you have there mate, youll have a fair bit of torque that will be hard to get to the ground if you go too high up in gearing. Could always take off in 2nd gear if you wanted, but may as well just stick with the tried and trusted.

The 3.45 ratio is hard to beat for an LT1. It's a little too short for my L98 at the strip (shoulda done 3.33s).

But to give you a good answer I'd need to know your powerband and shift points.

hi case and centralcoaster,
thanks for the replies!!
powerband range i guess is from 2,300 rpm -6,200 rpm.
shift points @ 5,000 rpm i would say.
i guess then just try out 3.45 ratio then.
cheers and thanks

I have a 96 383 lt4 with the zf6 and GM847 cam. i have 3.73 now, but wish i had 3.90s. i shift @7000rpm
i think it would launch a little better with the 3.90s and my drag radials.
