I sent this email to HP tech support:

hp e-mail support

language_code : en
language : English
Country of Residence : United States
product_line : TD
product_oid : 1101461
product_name : HP dvd840i DVD Writer
part_number : DUMDVD840B,DUMDVD840D,Q6773A,DUMDVD840X
purchase month : 6
purchase year : 2006
problem area : installation and setup
operating system : Microsoft Windows XP Professional
How is your product connected to your PC? : Other information
problem description :

This is dvd 840X that is acting very strange. Using Nero
6, the system is doing the following:

1. It writes to a DVD fine, but then when I go to view the disk, it acts blank.

3. When using Nero's own system info, it indicates nothing is on the
disc. When I do open the disc in Explorer, it thinks it's a CD, not a
DVD. Something is woefully amiss.

2. It will NOT acknowledge the presence of a Dual Layer DVD. It will ignore it
as if no is disc present.

I am using Memorex DVDs, the regular ones are DVD-R 16x/4.7mb/120 min and the
DLs are DVD+R 2.4x/8.5mb/240 min RW.

OS is XP Pro, SP2. Computer is AMD based 64 bit Athlon, ABIT motherboard, IDE
controller

I am at a loss.

This is what they sent back, please note this was sent from "english@hpodd.com":

Dear Andrew

Thank you for contacting HP Optical Drive Support.

For your situation, please try to update the latest firmware from our website
for this drive:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/so ... x?lc=en&cc=us&softwareite
m=dv-39047-1&product=1101461&dlc=en&lang=en
In addition the media is an important influential factor on the issue, please
make try more disks
with better qualified, made by famous manufacturers.
If you have another PC available, please try to install the drive to it to
verify its workability. This would highly recommended.
In case the problem remains the same, that seems drive fault, eventhough it is
very unfortunate that your drive stopped working as it should, but it was not
under the warranty any more,so we can`t provide any warranty for your drive
since it`s out of warranty already.

Best wishes,

To locate the appropriate online help for your product, please use the following Web site located
at:http://www.hp.com/go/assistance

If you are interested in finding out how your HP consumer products could be affected by Microsoft's
release of Windows XP Service Pack 2, please visit http://www.hp.com/pond/windowsxp/index.htm.

Once again, thank you for contacting HP Optical Drive support.

Sincerely
HP Email Support

The guy's name I talked with at HP service was Jalehandro.
Wierd name for someone who spoke Hindi to the person sitting next to him.

When I placed to order to ship my computer back, the lady taking the info could barely speak English. Her name was Marie.
(Eventually got a new MoBo and hard drive)
Warranties are wonderful.

Here's the topper.
Called Dell service when my son bugged up his brand new computer; Could've been the same people I talked with.
Matthew George was this dude's name.
Sent me an e-mail for follow-up, The whole name is Boney Maythew George.

Where do they dig up the names.

In Hindi, Boney Maythew Jalehandro is probably as common as John is here for all I know. Unfortunately what do you buy? All tech support is outsourced to India, my suggestion? By pass the manufacturers tech support and call Casey in OZ, he knows computers. I had better luck talking to him for a card reader problem than I did with the manufacturers tech person, hell at least I could understand Casey!

Clearly you're not speaking proper engrish. He probably spent 10 minutes looking up woefully in the dictionary.

But to be fair, you can't count for shit: 1, 3, 2...

Did you make sure it's plugged in?
