I'm about at the end of my engine work and am assembling everything. I will admit to being anal about all things Corvette, but I just learned another lesson in the graduate-level subject "Never trust anything anyone else has done on a car, especially if it's your car, and especially if it's a simple thing."

I'm expecting to test drive my 'vertte today, so I'm getting a little anxious. A previous owner put a K & N filter on. I'd never buy one of these myself, but I figured, "What the hell, it's free and won't hurt the engine."

I had cleaned the filter a while ago and oiled it this morning. I went to install it and thought -- "Y'know, let's see if K & N has anything on their website. Never know if there might be some oolie there." To make a long story short, the F***ING IDIOT who put the K&N in never installed the required gaskets. ...

On the bright side, I called K&N to see if they sold the gaskets separately and Julio said "No". However, after a brief pause, Julio continued, "However, we would be happy to send you a new set for free." This was after he knew I wasn't the one to purchase the filter. Two thumbs up for Julio and K&N, and if I ever find the previous owner who left the gaskets off ...

Thanks for giving me a forum in which to blow off steam. Gotta get back to work.

Gaskets?....what gaskets would that be? I recently replaced the radiator on my 92 and the previous owner had put on a K&N filter and I do not remember seeing any gaskets during tear down. I figured the same thing you did, it's on there already, why not leave it. Hmmmm.

That's okay, it'll flow better without all those unnecessary restrictions. I went at it with a hole puncher to increase the airflow even more.

Yup. There's nothing there but air box.

there is a foam gasket that goes around the edge of the air box where the filter mates up... I am not 100% sure it's required all the time, there is enough variance in manufacture with these things...

Tech Support (Julio) at K&N was emphatic that the foam gasket was required, and it had to be greased to seal properly.

Good God! I'm enough of a Type-A that this might easily have caused a stroke had it happened to me. Can you imagine ...

Try this one. 1981 we had a new fleet of GMC Brigadere tractors delivered with new Detroit 6v92 engines. We would undeck them and prep them for serivce. One of them would spin over very fast, put would not start. Found out it had no rods and no pistons. Guess the UAW guys at DDE were pissed off?

I know what they are saying, I have one, but the point is that the variation in production means that what most require isn't what ALL require.

IIRC, on my install, I didn't have the room to do the foam across the bottom.

That's because the polyurethane on the K&N is rock hard and doesn't seal worth a crap. Is this foam gasket something they added?

Maybe they got sued for filling someone's motor with dirt.

When I was using a K&N filter and my factory air box, I used self adhesive foam around the box to seal the filter. I think it helped better than what was originally there.
