I was listening to the radio on my way back from L.A. this afternoon, as they reported on two fires there burning up the hillsides and homes north of me.

5 minutes later, I came across a new fire in Newport Beach. Then 20 minutes later, another one cropping up on Camp Pendleton marine base.

And now a 5th fire in San Diego County causing more evacuations.

I guess God hates Californians!

And there's a proposition out to raise mine and everyone else's property tax to pay for increased fire services to these areas. Personally I think the people living in those areas should pay for it! It would have to be armageddon (fire would have to burn past 5 miles of dense residental area) before it made its way into my neighborhood.

Hey Cuisinartvette, do want to lend me your ZR1 now? I can find some choice places to leave it parked overnight.

The news is showing these genius homeowners hosing down their roofs and yards.

All that accomplishes is drain all the water pressure out of the city water mains so there's little left for the fire trucks to pump out of the fire hydrants. Those hydrants are designed and located to protect the area based on a certain available water pressure.

Hey, I have all this extra gasoline, and no place to store it. Can I store it on the ground around your car?

Is this sign in your area?

Apparently, you've not been faced with losing everything you own before.

Under these conditions, I'll bet you'll find people willing to piss on their roofs if it will make any difference.

This one is going to have a lot more insurance companies looking for arsonists. Back in Detroit during the riots we called it Jewish BBQ's. Thats when the inner city dwellings burned to the ground with no rioters in sight.

Just pray that the loss of life is zero this time.

I rented a backhoe last summer to put in a circular drive and move some big rocks around.
While I had it, I cut a fire break. I now have 50 feet of protected space around the entire house.
If a fire comes close, the fire fighters will try and save a protected property before an unprotected one. It's up to the homeowner to help save themselves.
I also installed cementboard fireresistant siding and have a cement tile roof.

Good Luck to the guys in Ca.

I agree up to the point where their actions begin to intefere with the fire dept operations.

And then every time after stuff burns the fire depts get sued by angry homeowners that are monday-morning quarterbacking their efforts.

Oh yea, absolutely.
The "homeowner to help save themselves" was doing the preventitive shit before they ever see smoke in the air.

The field next to my mother's house caught fire from someone welding on some bleachers. She wasn't home, but she had probably 50' of weeds cleared around her property, and also had gate access.

When she got home the fire department had cut the lock and accessed her yard and was staging there to put the fire out. The entire lot behind her and part of the one alongside burned.

Without that, they would've had a much harder time getting any access to the fire and probably would've had to back up and set up a firebreak first.
BaseballDude:
Well, after a 24 hours marathon I finally got the pics uploaded (heck, I even took a shower!).

Well, our house barely averted this firestorm. The first pic below was taken at 10:30am Saturday. Looking due East from my rooftop, this was the beginning of the fire that you are still reading about today (that is now burning Diamond Bar).

That fire would then jump itself up and over all the various hills and ridges until you had this situation (looking North):

I was camped out on my concrete-shingled roof watching the copters and planes do one drop after another. Watching the HUGE DC-10 flying super low was pretty amazing (didn't get a pic of that). The DC-10 had a little chase plane running in front of it. They flew over the target once and then flew around and laid down their drop on the second pass.

Houses were completely burned not 1/2 mile from my place. It was all so random. The really big homes along the ridge (the ones that didn't burn...most were saved) were probably saved by either the water drops or the huge amount of fire engines up there. The ones near my place that burned were hit with flying embers (that traveled a good 1/4 to 1/2 mile) and there just wasn't any fire fighting equipment there until those homes were already lit up.

We were lucky. Been living here 17 years (same house) and we knew there would come a day when this might happen. Luckily we are several neighborhoods inland from the foothills. Just south of Yorba Linda Blvd, which is the main East-West artery through town.

The pics above would later also burn Carbon Canyon to the North, Chino Hills to the Northeast, Brea to the West/Northwest and now Diamondbar to the North/Northwest. One spark did all of this.

Los Angeles fire worsens, 10,000 homes threatened
The fire started on Wednesday above the exclusive community of La Canada Flintridge Photo: AP

Residentsin the north were urged to evacuate as the 4-day-old blaze nearly doubled in size overnight and headed into the Antelope Valley. To the south, mandatory evacuations remained in effect.

Some 500 commercial buildings were also in danger, as was Mount Wilson, the nexus for key telecommunications facilities, including TV and radio transmission towers, the US Forest Service said.

The fire that started on Wednesday above the exclusive community of La Canada Flintridge was only 5 per cent contained but firefighters were hopeful that they would benefit on Sunday from slightly cooler temperatures, just below 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37 Celsius). The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Dense smoke filled the skies over the foothills and prompted authorities to issue health warnings for the Los Angeles basin.

Fire officials said the fire had consumed more than 55 square miles of dry brush in the western portion of the Angeles National Forest.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, California's governor, declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles County last week in response to four fires in the area.

We had a fire on the hill here. It was at a place called Portuguese Bend. A couple of houses were destroyed, but no one was hurt. The fire is contained.

Most of these fires happen on that same stretch of freeway near Castaic. People throwing cigarettes out windows or pulling off the highway with overheating cars and their cat converters catch the weeds on fire. They need a big f****** wall in there to keep the cars away from the weeds.
