We got hit with the 100mph winds here in Indiana over the summer. We lost power for 5 days. We told ourselves that we would go out and buy a generator right after that and we never did.
Luckily we would still have heat if our power went out due to a gas fireplace...but it does suck without lights and a fridge. |

Ice storms are the suck. I hope everyone up there's okay. My son lives in New Bedford but I didn't read anything about them losing power. I'll give him a call in a bit and make sure all's well.

Generators are so nice when the power goes out. I bought one to mainly run my welder at the racetrack. I've used it 5 times in the last 10 years when the power went off. I just run one extension cord to the furnace and one upstairs for the tv and a light. |

Any word on your Son? I hope he (they) are all ok! When I was still living in Delaware, way back in late Jan into Feb 1994, we got beaten to DEATH with ice storms... One about every 5 days for nearly a month. It was just ugly. The roads were utterly inpassable. The first one was the worst one (the others were nice enough to hit at night or one weekends)... it hit about 2:00PM on a work day (it was my nephews birthday, too, more on that later!). At about 3:00 PM, they called the work day - the Gov sent us all home. It took me nearly 30 minutes to get home... all of three miles. I had to accelorate from the light in 2nd gear, cause first was just not happening (I had a Prelude Si at the time). The roads were covered in ice. I get home and about 2 hours later, my late brother, Roy, calls to invite us over for cake/ice cream for my nephews birthday. It was the first time in my memory that I let road conditions rule my travel. I indicated there wasn't enough money in the world (well, I am sure there was...) to get me to drive in that shit. You see, I was already living on borrowed time, the best I could figure. I was stopped at a light on US13 in south Dover. I was in front of a local shopping mall. US13 is a dual highway with grassy medians. I was in the left lane. In my rear view, I saw my life flash... a total asshole was cruising down the highway, IN MY LANE, at well over 50mph... it was a mid-80s Cutlass... with no hope of stopping that thing. At the last second, he was somehow able to merge into a left turn lane and hit the brakes. He stopped right next to me in the grassy median... and it wasn't because of his brakes, he dug ruts into median and that finally stopped him. As I said, I wasn't taking that risk again. |

22 deaths from space heater usage = 22 dead people no longer polluting the gene pool.
It makes me wonder how new or how safe those heaters were... However, the storms are still utterly tragic. I hope they get power back, and fast! When we had the storms I mentioned above, the power company wasn't able to get lines fixed for upwards of three weeks. They measure usage in inventory years. That storm used up like 4 years of poles, 7 years of wire... that kinda thing. Insane. |

Has the ice thawed yet? Recovery will go much faster once the ice has reverted to water. Then comes the flooding.

I just talked with Gary (Hardbar) Hoffman, if your trying to get a hold of him, he got hit by the icestorm.
He had to cut his trip to PRI short and come back. He's up on generator power, but his internet is down. |

Well, thanks to the snow storm today.
a 30ft branch came down and JUST MISSED MY CAR! Well actually some smaller pieces did hit it, but it looks like the fence to the brunt of the hit. |
