would it be dumb to just pick up and just move somewhere if you had no strings?

Most people have a limited window of opportunity in life to do something like that - if you want to do it, go for it!

I made a big move from PA to CO in 1996. I had a wife
And one kid at the time. We didn't know anybody out here. It was a job thing.

Anyway, it was the best thing that ever happened to us. Go for it!

If you really want to, I think it'd be dumb not to. If you'd rather be somewhere else and can be, why not? I did it once, 22 years ago and am considering doing it again in the not too distant future, like two to three years. The first time was to NC and the next time will likely be to AZ.
Where are you now and where are you considering going?

A few thousand doesn't go too far. Get a job lined up and go. You may be able to get someone to pay your relocation and move free.. Sounds like AZ is where you want to be.

Tuscon. Wasnt planned, really thats one reason why I wound up back here. Sold a business I had and was on my way to pick up my girl and take a trip to Vegas. Got into it over the phone on the way there so I told her to F.O., called a buddy in Tuscon and said Id be there in a few hours.
After a few days I decided I liked it got a job right away,(when I get bored I work) was moving stuff over on the weekends...had plenty of cash job paid good and housing was cheap. I would have been set by now...

Too many loose strings back here that got out of control so back I came. Had I planned it Id probably still be there.
Dont know if Id go back there as a permanent move(probably look for a little milder climate) but went to show its easy to just pick up and start over. Lots of fun with new surroundings, like a kid in a candy store.

I did it 4.5 years ago... I did have a place to come to, but no job.

I moved here to Torrance from Delaware when I joined bastet44 out here. The best thing I have ever done. Period.

I was just worn out of Delaware. Sure, have some GREAT friends there, but I do keep in contact with them, and they have an open invite to visit whenever they want.

If it was me, I would get. I don't know what you do for a living, but start researching the area.

If you have an engineering background, I would look into Northrop Grumman. LA Times Story

There might be other industries with the same needs, too.

I moved to Chicago in July, 2004. I didn't know anyone here except my (now) wife and some of her family. I had strings back home (still do) but moving was the best thing I ever did. Didn't have a job when I moved, found one. Hardest part about moving is making new friends as an adult. It's easy when you're still in college or school and you can meet a lot of people. I still don't have many friends out here, but I have made a few close friends. I still talk to people back home on a weekly basis or so.

I'd say go for it.

my family wouldn't piss on me if i was on fire. they are too concerned with themselves. i had a laundry list of medical problems over the summer and not one ever came by to see how i was even though i couldn't even help myself. i live less than a half mile from 80% of my family.

i would but i don't believe it would do anything but insight an argument which is just about the last thing i am able to deal with right now.

Well, the best advice I can give is try, argument or not. Being 3 miles away and not talking is one thing, being across the country and not talking is another.

True, true enough. But you can't control them, only yourself. I'd still knock on the door and say goodbye. You MAY regret not doing it, but in the long wrong you never regret doing it.

Just saying.
