Welp, here is the low down. I took out all the tile, dry wall, toilet, sink and stuff and under the tile floor was this. Oh, and its even worse under the tub.

Amazing how wet it gets behind there. I don't know that I'd do another tile shower wall after seeing what one of mine looked like.

Don't worry, John, I've seen worse

Sometimes it's easier just to rip it all out and start from scratch. I'm assuming the living room wall is on the opposite side of bathroom, hence the water damage?

What's under the house? Crawl/basement/slab?

I just detailed my bathroom.... AH YUP.... Got out the old Makita, a polishing pad, and went to work with some cutting cream on the tub and counter tops. Polished those suckers out to a mirror finish! Then I top coated it with some 303 Aerospace Protectant.

Nah the living room is a seperate project and thats termite damage. Not to worry, them suckers are long dead but the prior owner covered up the damage with plywood. The floor in the bathroom is very unstable but I can still walk on it. I have a crawl space under the house but I should not need it. Once I am down to the joists I am going to access the damage, make repairs and refloor. The studs are too easy to replace so I aint worried about them.

In the one pic that shows the living room floor it seems like there is a water mark. Ever have water problems on that wall?

As for as the joists, you're right that once you get the floor up you can inspect the joists, sister them as necessary. A new subfloor will make a clean start to the project.

Keep us posted.

I think there was water damage at some point but it was not much. Tomorrow I am going to pull up the junk and install a new subfloor.

Oh Boy...I've seen that before......
I've got a soft spot in the 1/2 bath downstairs now...right beside the sink cabinet area...
It appears to be old water damage from a leak, etc...
Still will have to pull everything up to put down new subfloor...
At least it's only a 1/2 bath though...Still...yuck...
Good Luck!

The house was built in 52 or 53 I think. So I expected something like this. No biggie. Just takes a little more time and money.

Works like a charm right?

I topped it off with Some 303 Aerospace. I was going to wax it but i was worried about the floor being to slick if I did. The 303 seems to be working quite well in keeping the soap scum and rust off the walls (well water).

I have county water but the county just owns the wells.

Here's a trick to remove the rust stains (or the green stains). Mix some Creme of Tarter (the cake frosting chit) and some peroxide up and apply. Works well.

ARRGGGHHHH.....I am beat down. I got off of work around 530PM and went right home, changed and to lowes where I picked up some supplys and came right back and jumped on the bathroom. I pulled up all the old flooring, only the joists are showing now. I have some small repair work to do and then I can put flooring back down. My hope was to get the flooring laid tonight but its too late now and I dont want the law called in from me making too much noise plus I got to run 3 miles at 530AM so I need to hydrate and rest.

subfloor is in. Just need layer two and I will be good to go and can start doing the electrical and drywall. Monday the plumber has a few things to do and we get an estimate for the brick glass window so those places I cant mess with the dry wall yet. After the tub is in and the window I will finish the dry wall, get it tapped and sanded, primered and maybe painted then comes the tile floor. After that I can install the toilet and sink. Then I should be done.

Layer two is in and guess what? It fits FLUSH with the parts that did not need replacing...IE Hallway, closet! Thats AWSOME! Now I got to frame up a window in the living room where the termite damage is so when the window guy comes he can give us a good estimate. I think I will finish that after dinner.

Looks good so far. I especially like the contractor grade ladder

Are those PVC supply lines for your sink & toilet? Is that code down there?

RJ, is the gut giving you an estimate for the window or the install? The reason I ask is that with your expertise, the window install should be easy.
