I'm going to spend a few hours at the shooting range, probably next weekend with the lady.

I haven't shot a gun since I was probably 15. Not planning on buying one, just want to try something new and she's up for it.

They sometimes have classes with safety and historical instruction, but I'm not exactly sure if I'll be in that or not.

I just wanna busta cap in some paper ass!

Just like the track, proper instruction is a great place to spend your $$$

semi-auto or revolver?

I'd say go for the revolver since it's been a while.

less gadgets to worry about.

1) Always treat the gun as if it were loaded. The muzzle is always pointed down range.

2) Never load unless your ready to shoot. Do not lay any gun down if its loaded. (using the safety does not count) When any gun is on the table or bench, the cylinder is open and empty. An auto loader with the magazine out and the breach locked open.

3) Your finger is only on the trigger when your ready to shoot. Other wise hold your trigger finger straight out on the receiver/slide/frame. This is especially true when handling an unloaded gun off the range.

4) Safety glasses and ear muffs are always required. Loaners are probably available at the range.

5) Always remember "Stupid Hurts" you or others around you.

Unloaded guns cause the most accidents, because the first thing said after an accident is;

"I thought it was unloaded"

Have fun and think safety, safety, safety.

Cool thanks. I'm guessing she's not going to like the kick back of a short barrel.

Then just put one round in the gun to start.

Best way to ensure its empty if she freaks after the first shot.

Jr gave you the best safety instructions and good advice about one round at a time. I'm assuming you are bringing the gf with? If you are concerned about kickback, rent a ruger Mark III which is a .22 target pistol. Virtually no kickback at all. If she/you are comfortable with that, you can move up to a 9 mm. I wouldn't recommend going much larger than a 9mm for your first time out. Once you are more comfortable with gun handling safety you could consider moving up.

Plus, she will be more accurate with the 22, which usually makes a person want to do it more because there is a feeling of accomplishment with it. Usually when I go to the range, the guys that bring their gfs with get their butts kicked as far as the targets go. Guys get all macho and want to blow off every round they can in 3 seconds. Women seem to take their time more. Something to be learned from that.

I saw that happen to a friend with a 357, luckly she didn't break anything.
I think she was shooting with a "limp wrist" which let the kick of the gun rotate her wrist and put the barrel into her forehead.
She was "macho" enough to shoot it again. With her wrist locked, the kick drove the gun in an arc that would have put the barrel slightly above her head. But, with her wrist locked, the gun only kicked up about a foot.

Comments JR?

Maybe his gf shot him in the ass. Don't worry, he's recovering nicely.
