Told the wife the car was shifting bad, hanging up, wearing out, I neeeded a new one and the GM was 500 bucks,, she fell for it. "Honey, I can get a better shifter for a whole lost less online". Well she got suppicious when the Hurst showed up the very next day. Damn that was fast shipping. Jacked it up, dropped the exhaust and grabbed every size hammer and punch I had. The first punch I grabbed I just put it on the pin to check its size and the dang pin went flying out. ALRIGHT !!! I've read all the horror stories. Boy was I happy, so happy I replaced the slave cylinder too while the exhaust was out. I like the Hurst, it taking a little to get used to. No reverse lockout, the throw is sweet, a little notchy on shifts, very happy though.

Congrats! Glad to hear you fared well with the pin, too - luck of the draw, it seems ;-)

You can still buy the Hurst? Where did you get it from. I thought after B&M absorbed them, they discontinued the Hurst model.

Mine fit fine other than having to knock down the edges on the sides of the shifter body, because it would rub against the aluminum shifter cradle as you moved it fore/aft. It's smooth as silk now.

I dunno, Dean, those don't look like certified NCRS floormats to me. That's not good

Shifter install looks great. Still getting used to it? Good improvement? I've never driven a stick vette so I have nothing to compare it to

What's that in front of the shifter on the bottom left under the radio? XM, Sirius, MP3 player?

You are correct, sir !! I've read alot about how Bose system sucks, but with the changer its sounds good. I know there is better out there, but this way I can keep close to stock.

Actually they are just area rugs I cut to fit. They cover the original and keep them clean. When I drive it to work, I don't worry about getting oil or grease on the matts.

any bets that Dad bought his Hurst from the guy who designed it?

The guy who designed it was named Chris (Reinhardt? does that sound right?) and had a ZR1. Just a stab with a UID of zrchris.

I have the Hurst... AND LOVE IT! It's been in there for 7 years now.

It makes driving it fun again. Does anybody experience a click between 3 and 4 ? From 2nd to 3rd I have to allow it to center for a fraction of a second and then hit 3rd. Any tips.. I'm looking at another slave bleed to try and force more air out, maybe that will make it smoother.

For hitting 3rd, and especially 5th, you need to just shove the shifter up at an angle.

If you try maneuvering it over and up, you're more likely to miss a shift.

Just use the palm of your hand, no fingers.

The gates on the ZF are actually further apart than most 6 speeds I've driven.

Thanks CC, I will work on it. It's funny how one shift it falls right into place, and the next time I have to double clutch it. I really have to concentrate, the ZF has 40,000 miles on it, but hell, I have always had slave issues.

I do suggest doing the project with a clutch swap... it's SOOO much easier.

The pin wasn't that tough on mine. I even did it with the exhaust on, which was tricky.

The hardest part was just taking apart and reassembling the shifter on the bench.

Whats funny I was so concerned about the pin, I pulled the exhaust. What a waste of time that was. But if I didn't (the way my luck goes) I would have been pounding and drilling the damn thing out.

That shifter knob is a little worn. Maybe it's time for a knob job.

You know I've consdered getting the black hurst ball, but I like the stock look. I'll take a sharpie and cover that worn spot, good as new :thumbright:

Try some liquid shoe dye - I used some to touch up a little worn spot on my driver's seat bolster, worked great. I also have used it on my exterior door handles.

The problem with a Sharpie is that it has a purpleish hew when dried, it hardly ever matches black correctly.

And, I don't think thet shoe polish will work because it won't sitck well to plastic, does work well on vinyl, etc.

A little black model car paint or some black spray paint ( sprayed into the cap & put on with a small brush) will stick better.
