Yep, they're talking about that here in NC as well..
Something about installing GPS's in all the cars--- Going to raise the inspection fee, inspection sticker fee, property tax fee......right on down the line... We've got the highest gasoline tax in the region.... ....sorry sob's.... :ace: |

The way they want to work it is drop the gas tax and install GPS in every car, then tax miles driven. Lots of problems with this: - Intrusive, they'll know where you go. Big Brother. - Cost of installing, maintaining and reading GPS units. This will eat into revenues. - It will cause people to drive less, generating less revenue. - Since it's miles driven, there's no penalty for low mpg gas guzzlers. The greens will go nuts. So, they will install these GPS units, then decide they need the gas tax too! Don't worry about taxing the air, Algore has it figured out. Carbon. Humans exhale CO2. Only a matter of time before we are taxed based on our carbon footprint. |

They don't want to get rid of the tax. The big issue is that the states for years have depended upon gas tax to supply the coffers with coin. With the big push of more fuel efficient cars, they are seeing a reduction in funds. They know that increasing the tax is not going to do much, as cars are being pushed with more fuel efficiency. So, making it a use tax is the best way for them to guarantee taxes. I hate what they are trying to do, but I understand what the reasoning is. And usually govt is good at screwing while making reasonable decisions. The big door this opens up (other than tracking you) is the ability for them to tax your usage on the time of day. In Oregon they are talking about increasing the toll if you are using a road during rush hour traffic. |

I agree, they don't want to get rid of the gas tax. But, if they get lower it initially, it makes people more compliant in accepting the GPS. The GPS tracking system is new and intrusive, people resist change. Once the GPS system is up and rolling, they simply raise the gas tax, much easier to do. |

My son has gps and can tell me how fast I am traveling while sitting in the back seat. Seems an easy way to automatically fine speeders as well. Go five over and they have it immediately taken out of your checking account. hey, no more parking meters. Just pull up and park, they just charge your account accordingly. How many ways could this be used????

Maybe it's time to think about moving to another country. Like Puerto Rico.

This is a flawed plan. How are they honestly going to keep track of all these cars mileage. They have a hard enough time trying to get me to keep my front plate on my vehicle... inspection it goes on.... afterwards it comes right off.

In NC, it's already been voted down (I'm sure it will come up again next week).
Supposedly, bro'Bama is against this on the fed level. |
