I autocross but I'd like to inquire about full usage of my street driving Corvette in other track or street activities.
So there is;

1) Autocross
2) Rally Cross
3) Road Rally
4) Drag Racing
5) Driver Education (road course/track)

I'm sure I must be missing something. The year is young and I hope to try something new this year. Rally cross is not really a Corvette activity that I know of. I wouldn't want to beat up my car like that anyway.

Yea, Tommy, rally cross is a tad hard on the paint. Those cars look a little beatup at the end of the day. And the Vette will bottom out on the first jump, unless you want to convert yours to 4 wheel drive.

Road Rallys, I think, can be done w/o extra expenses, but the guys that do it a lot have a rally clock onboard. Most SCCA regions put these on.

Driver Ed.? If it's for you, there's lots available including, Street Survival Schools, High Preformance Street Schools, Car Control Clinics and PDX (Preformance
Driving Experience, SCCA), HPDE (High Performance Driving Experience). The level of instructor expertise varys in most of these.
If you want to get into instructing, SCCA is licensing the Time Trials Instructors, bascially having instructors with experience work with new instructors at PDXs.
I hold license in Time Trials Instructor-Specialest, chief driving instructor, instruct the instructors, etc.

Trackpedia lists tracks by location for road racing, maybe there's one close to you. http://www.trackpedia.com/wiki/Main_Page

Some video from the National Corvette Museum track event:

http://vimeo.com/2377766

I do some drag racing also. There should be a drag track close to you. It's fun but my favorite is running on a road racing track.

Try them out you'll have lots of fun!

Out of those HPDE is definitely the cheapest way to develop skills. There has to be a good forum out there for your local enthusiasts. The one I frequent doesn't have any Florida people on it.

Don't wait on your friends or fellow Corvette owners to accompany you, because they will only kick your tires. Head to the track and meet up with the local track-addicts and maybe bring a co-pilot. Although some groups restrict passengers, particularly at the beginner levels.

And how about drifting? I want to try that also. Can't be any worse than the drag racing crowd down here, and I pretty much tune out the "children" anyways.

Agreed.
In the SCCA PDX (HPDE), the begining drivers are required to have an instructor. Some of the instructors are running Club Trials or Time Trials at the same event. They get a discount for voulnteering and we get an instructor for every student, works well.

There was a local Corvette (C3) that tried rally cross, it came back minus a fender!

I wouldn't want to snowcross with one either LOL

Autox
Drag
HDPE
SoloI as well, that's where they time you on a track, but it's one at a time, not wheel-to-wheel.

all great to do in a Corvette.

Next up for me is an Open Road challenge, where they shut down a section of a highway. Top speeds 200+

I'd like to do a top speed event
But I get enough salt on my car in the winter

I would try rallycross in mine. Why not. It's been offroad a few times. With the posi and wide tires it did great except for the low ground clearance.

True, but the events I've been in (non-SCCA), the instructor only rode along for 1 or 2 sessions. I went to one NASA event as a spectator and damn it was packed! Maybe I'll stay away from the big organizations.

Yea, livin' in the big city.

Our events in Reno are lite, like 20 max. in the PDX.
But, you go to ThunderHill where the Sacramento guys go and it is packed.
For the best track time and the fewest idiots that forget to point you by, you're right.

I used to do mostly PCA and BMW-CCA events. Once I discovered NASA there was no going back. It's the only venue that I know of which has both HPDE and racing (and of course time trialing). I'll agree that some of the events are packed, especially at the premier tracks, but it's worth it. Now we have a core group of about 15 people that all meet up. Like you said before, waiting for your own friends to go with you will result in you staying home...go and make new ones.

It's much cooler to see real racing between your own track sessions than to see other beginners putter around, and you can learn about competing and see if it's for you.

Now I go to events with other clubs and find them severely lacking...

Of course I'm speaking specifically about my NASA region, Great Lakes, I'm sure it could vary from one to the other.

Too bad you're not closer, at Spectator-Racing events the instructors ride along as long (or as little) as you want. I usually spend all day in the car with my students.

And they usually come back to our events despite that

I'll be spending even more time with my students at our April event, since my car is again spread out along the shop floor, asking for handouts...

Spectator-Racing is applying for a stimulus package

Yea, me too. I'm doing double duty. I just got my license upgrades, Time Trials- Specialist and Tech Inspector-Specialist. Doing tech and instructing makes for a long day.

Plus, I just got a new student/instructor intercom.

It looks like I'll be doing 2 events as the Chief Driving Instructor so, I won't be riding, just doing the classroom and watching the group as a whole.

Love to try it, they haven't had the Mt Washington Hillclimb in a while, there's plenty others in NH though.

I won't try it unless you have a full cage & fire system in the car. Hitting a wall is one thing, driving off a cliff is another!
