We have a 1993 Cherokee... and this is what happens when you ask a tech question:

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/power-steering-leak-869879/

Pretty much useless.

It's beyond useless. I was reading the thread to bastet44 and she was shocked by their attitude.

I have, as stated in the last post, reported the thread and cleared my account.

Fuck them and their sensors.

I can't beleive them... seriously. They are being run like CF.

Why make a car forum "family friendly?" Do 10 YO jeep fans ACTUALLY participate?

Work friendly is one thing; that's important so CG doesn't get banned by work filters, but family friendly?

And the moderator... whew... talk about a corporate tool.

I logged out. I am no longer going there. Done and gone.

Wow, what an asset to all the Jeep owners out there.

The moderator doesn't seem to concerned about people posting bullshit in the tech section and running people off.

I think you mean "censor". I will be moving to a site where people use the actual word and not a homonym.

Please clear my account.

I have a buddy who's a Jeep builder, I'll see what forums he uses.

I don't think the sensor is causing your power steering leak.

Yea, I can relate to this. I had the same type experience with a couple of VW forums a few years ago. Knowing very little about the specifics of a Jetta, I was hunting for the same type info as you were. Finally found a good site.

So Andy, you couldn't tell by popping the hood?

You're in the computer biz, does it bug you when someone asks you why their computer isn't working and it seems like they haven't even spent 5 seconds trying to determine why?

I get that at work. "Hell, problem solving is hard, I'll just ask Kevin."

I think that was the impression they got, but they also have the choice to not respond. If you had a chick username they would've been all over that. In fact, I highly recommend posing as a chick when asking for help on car forums!

Here, try this:

Hello boys, I have a question!

My poor little jeep has a puddle under the steering thingy. I tried to open the hood but can't figure it out, (if only I had a boyfriend to help me!) tee hee. So I put on an old t-shirt so I wouldn't stain my blouse and I tried to crawl under there. My boobs are in the way though, so I couldn't really get under enough see anything and now my t-shirt is all wet and oily.

Please help!

Try the Cherokee Forum.

http://www.cherokeeforum.com/

I've owned a bunch of XJ's over the past 10 years. Many had well over 200K when I sold or gave them away. I've been lucky I guess because I've never had any PS problems out of any of them.

If it was leaking a puddle overnight - but there was no obvious spray or drip from the hi-pressure hose or a fitting when running... the first thing I'd suspect would be the plastic reservoir - followed by the front brg in the pump.

Also be sure it's not ATF from a tranny cooler line. The radiators suck in XJ's and I've had a couple crack around the tranny cooler lines and leak so much ATF all over the engine compartment you couldn't tell where it was comming from.

I think that's inevitable to get some of those responses online, but dogpiling on a new member, in a technical section of all places, is ridiculous and counters the entire point of having a forum, it runs people off.

My guess is the censorship is so strict because the average age of the DBs posting is 18-22.

They're really only worried about making sure their dick is bigger than yours.

Ironically I'm a member there...limited posts because as you noted the help is not very helpful, and their traffic per thread is usually pretty horrible.

Andy I did a lot of work on my Cherokee, a friend's '97 Grand, and my truck, which had a Grand engine in it.

Still need help with your power steering leak?

To be honest, the PS is rather strangly laid out, and much of the pump area is not visable.

Agreed. Snarky replies are not a problem... but when that's ALL you get.

At the same post time, some other guy asks about exhaust questions and gets a series of good answers.

I get snarky. You can see why I was getting pissed.

I will... but I am going to clean up the steering box and get started the old fashioned way.

I may even pick up a dye kit.

My friend is considering getting a 98 Grand Cherokee. I think it's the last year of the inline 4.0L.

That's a good thing right?

The 4.0L was available in the Grand Cherokee until 2004.

The 4.0L is a great engine. Very durable and has plenty of power for a 6cyl. Like I said, I've had quite a few regular Cherokees over the years and all of them were well over 200K miles at which point I either sold them or gave them to family members. Gas mileage is not great but not terrible either. The Cherokee's and Grand's are VERY CAPABLE 4WD's with good tires. Other people are always amazed at the off road terrain I've tackled with ours.

I have also pulled my both of my Corvettes on my 18ft dovetail open car trailer from DC to my dads shop GA a couple of times. A little under braked for that kind of towning - but if your careful it will do the job.

Your buddy could do a lot worse for a SUV.

The 4.0 is a very good engine. It is a direct decendant of the Nash I6 that dates back to about 1948 or so. In 1964 (1965?) it was seriously upgraded to the standard that lasted until about 1984 or so. It was used in the Concorde and Eagles at that stage. This was the 258 (4.2L) and 232 (3.8L) versions

AMC was bought by Chysler, and admittedly, buying a GM engine, the 2.8 V6 (a piece of shit, too), made little sense.

So Mopar revamped that old 6... It was resized (destroked, IIRC) to 4.0L, with EFI and a really slick header. This means the engine went from 100hp to 190hp. The MPG didn't change, which was a huge step forward, and emissions dropped.

In many ways, the 4.0L is the last of the great American Inline 6s. It was also the best all around I6.

i second the radiator theory.. they are a load of shit in jeeps and you need to strip the whole fucking front end off a grand cherokee to replace the stupid thing. and the tranny fittings definately went to the lowest bidder. aside from that i absolutely love the GC.. the cherokees are ok but i don't think htey are as capable off road. i had a grand cherokee for a year that never saw pavement. i would just drive it through the woods.. what an awesome machine. i had 30X9.5x15 bfg a/t's.. that was it. it went everywhere. i got a cherokee off a friend for $100. it lasted one day before the motor mount broke allowing the engine to drop and broke the distributer off the engine..
