I know they won't go straight on with any spacers....but what spacers?

The fronts have the same 56mm offset as the 88-96 cars
The rears are listed as 79mm v 56mm on 88 - 96 rear so that would be 23mm difference

So I would need a 23mm spacer for the rears?

But...aren't the 84 offset different than the later years you listed?

I think the early offset is something like 36mm.

You can make them fit, but I'd use adapters instead of spacers. I personally think the 19s are too big for the c4. IMHO.

To put late C4 wheels on early C4 you need 3/4" adapters

So to run the above mentioned rims on a early rear you need 18 +23 mm ; 40mm = 1 5/8".

The C6 Z06 19" rims are listed as having 56mm offset

OK, So I was at J & D Vette today, they had these Spacers that first bolted to your existing lugs and then the spacer had it's own lugs.....They were $140 Each....not to mention that lug nut that was on the spacer had to have a cavity to fit into on the inside of the wheel you are trying to use.

Resized Image

Somehow this is not what I pictured nor is it what I've been told.

That's not a spacer, it's an adapter. Spacers are dangerous, IMO, and won't get you more than a 1/4" more room. I would only use one of those if I had a tire rub issue or something.

That adapter is good because it is hub AND lug centric. If I had to buy again, I'd get one just like it. There are several ebay vendors that sell a set of 4 for about $200.

The stock studs are 1.125" long. If your adapter is thinner than that, the studs stick out a bit, and can interfere with the wheel mounting surface. This is an issue with aftermarket wheels only. OEM castings have cavities on the wheel mounting surface that clear that. I was able to use 1" adapters on my car with reproduction wheels, but had to do some grinding on the wheel mounting surface to clear the studs.

For adapter nuts, you just use some open-ended nuts. You can get these at most autoparts stores. They won't stick out.

So, Here is a "kit" for $81 on Amazon (I believe there are two in the kit)

Resized Image

It has the open Lugs that you described.

It looks as though....IF you had your Studs the correct length, these lug nuts would sit inside the adapter.

Shade tree would be to put the spacer on and then using a cut-off wheel you could take the extra length off of the Studs......

Personally I'd recommend just getting wheels that fit, but if you really want ones that don't, those are the correct type adapters to use. Get some 1.5" adapters and you won't have to worry about stud clearance.

Some replacement wheel bearings have quick-start studs that extend out further. I don't think they're longer than 1-1/2". But even if they are you can press them out and pull new studs in, that can be done on the car.

I also have some C5 mag wheels I'd let go cheap. Interested? The fronts need some cosmetic repair.

Here is "why".

I need new Rear tires. I also think at this point I MUST have a bent wheel....plus the wheels I have are really dated.

Three things...simple solution.

Find some take-offs that have tires...they sell all day for $400 as set with decent tires. Some are C6 wheels that have tires with 300 miles on them.

I've not pulled the trigger on buying any of them until I get this spacer thing fully under control.

That's what I'm doing. I'll spend another $300 on rear tires and have the same thing I've been unhappy with for ever.

Hey!! Buy some take-offs that are a design that I like!! Multiple problems solved in one single move

So $300 is my starting point.....I'll spend maybe $500 total before I start getting butt hurt over the issue. But there is no way I'll spend money on New wheels and tires......$1500?? No way...not my style.

Which C5 wheels do you have?? Are they wearing any shoes??

Like these, these are $285 for all four....Wheels, Tires, Lugs, Caps..everything you need. These aren't the most desired ones out there..but they are so cheap it is tempting.

I have two z51 wheels I'll give you free. They have old hard tires on them that need replacing, but they'll work for diagnising your issue. Then you put some new $80 tires on them.

OK guys, let's talk "Adapters" vs "Spacers" with longer lug nuts.

No one seems to want to share their knowledge on the subject over 'there'

Have fun with that. The final solution will cost more than adapters from DRM, and will only get you 5/8" of movement. IMO, spacers are for curing a minor fender rub, nothing more.

For making C5/C6 wheels fit you need adapters.

Why adapters instead of spacers and longer wheel studs? By using spacers and studs you are putting additional stress on the studs the longer they are. Why do that when you can use adapters that will be safer?

Or you can just buy wheels that fit and avoid the whole process. Cost will be no different than a $400 set of take-offs and $200 spacers.

Matatk, thanks, we're starting to educate...that is what I am after here.

on your parting note, Find me a set of tires and wheels that can be had for $400-$600....Take-offs are always the deal to be had. Right now the C6 wheels are pretty prevalent from folks pulling them off their brand new vette. All you have to do is look around.

Years ago, I made a ton of money relieving the Cadillac dealers for their Stocker 17" Escalade take-offs. Those wheels seem to multiply like rabbits back then....

I'd give $200 for a set and drive them over to the Chevy Dealership and sell them for $400

The Chevy used car manager was getting brand new tires and upgraded wheels for less than what a set of tires would cost.

John, sorry, you don't "need" anything to mount those C5/C6 wheels, they'll bolt right up.

But it'll look stupid with them tucked into the fenders so much on your 84.

You want to move the wheels out about 1" for appearances sake.

Adapters will get you there, spacers won't.

I've seen 2" thick adapters before.

The adapter, just looking at dimensions, is as beefy as the center of the wheel. Plus the adapters are usually made from billet aluminum. Chinese knock-off wheels are cast and would probably fail before the adapter. You do double the number of studs (and therefore double the chance of a stud failing). But otherwise I see no issues.

I had always heard on the other forum that 15 x 8 inch drag lites wouldn't clear the stock rear brakes on a C4. Summit makes a copy cat version of the Weld Drag lite that is a one piece wheel. The actual Weld wheels are 2 piece wheels that are welded together. The one piece wheels do not have the bead of welding material inside the rim that the 2 piece wheels do. I can't speak for all C4's, but on my 91 the 15 inch Summit wheels clear the rear brakes.

I would assume that the bead of weld taking up 3/16 around the inside of the rim is what causes the interference issue on C4's.

John, don't get those, you will regret it. Buy adapters that have a hub flange on them. Better peace of mind and no chance of getting the wheel on crooked.

BTW, the short course stadium trucks use wheel adapters similar to these and they make 800+ horsepower and land 20' jumps.

The 17s are beat up, with chips in the coating on the wheel lip, the 18s look great. I cleaned them off pretty good too.

Are you referring to the C5 wheels Kevin has? Those are 18x9.5 (65 mm offset) and 17x8.5 (58 mm offset). If you are referring to ZR1s, those have 36mm offset in the back.

Post up pics when you get them on... I'm thinking you can squeeze some 1.25" adapters on there. They will fill the fenders out nicely with those....the rear wheel lip will be 2/10" further out than stock Z51 wheels, fronts will be in the same spot.

Without adapters the rears will be pretty close to rubbing, but should be okay to get you by until you get the adapters in. MAKE SURE THE ADAPTERS YOU BUY HAVE METRIC STUDS so you can reuse your lugnuts.

So, Six months later and with CCs help.

I bought the Mag wheels he pictures and then today, I went and got four used tires for $150 (I know, "used" I'll get a new pair next months payday and then another new pair the following paycheck.)

and....used wheel spacer that were 1 1/4" wide for the rear. They were $50

I tried the wheels without the spacers but the left rear was rubbing on something, (when I took it off it was the E-brake cable and the dogbone)

The rear is about 1/8" of inch outside the finder.....Looks very nice.

I'll get pics when I feel industrious again.

Oh! So yeah, I've been chasing a vibration for three years.....had to be a bent rim after all. I'm in trouble as the vibration doesn't start till almost 90 mph rather than 62 mph (with used tires and a crappy spin balance machine I'm not going to judge anything just yet)

I doubt it. Unless you're wheel bearings are shot or the wheel is bent, an adapter won't magnify any sort of road noise or vibration.

well....it is louder.....louder than when I drove it home with the new wheels when they were rubbing....

Oh and I torqued the adapter lug nuts to 90 ft lbs. Would you do more than 90?

Could just be the tires and you didn't notice it before or it's a different road surface. Certain tires add a lot of road noise.
