can the 700r4 be made to shift with the same versatility of the "e" version
to avoid an external controller specifically WOT shifts and part throttle normal driving, this would save me a ton of money if it can accomplish this, I'll compromise if someone will tell be the differences. and is the e over rate as far as strength compared to the 700r4? will the e be able to interface with my vss configuration (89 vette) with a new sensor or is this impossible? thanks |

E being electronic and all shifts controlled by the PCM I don't think you can swap one into a 93 or earlier as they have ECMs, not PCMs.

IMHO no. I converted from a 700R4 to a 4L60E with the TCI controller and there is no comparison. I can program in what ever I want the 4L60E to do and it does it. With the TCI controller it has a switch that you can go between program A and B. Program A can be a "street version" and Program B can be a "race version". My A/B programs are set up the same except a little higher shifting rpms for the race version for when I go to the track. Did I tell you I love my 4L60E. |

The 700R4 WOT shift points are controlled by the governor. It can be adjusted fairly easily and cheaply to get the WOT shifts right where you want them.
The part throttle shifts are a combination of the governor springs, the TV cable and other things. I have yet to figure out how to get the part throttle shift rpms up where I want them. Weaker governor springs will not let it shift at all. Adjusting the TV cable will make a small difference but can burn up the trans in a hurry. I've been told a TCI constant pressure valvebody will allow me to put the TV cable wherever I want it in order to raise part throttle shifts and will not burn up the trans, but I haven't tried one yet. The shift firmness can be changed with a shift kit or smaller shift improver kit. Fairly cheap and easy to do and works great. The "e" transmissions are completely computer controlled. I wish I had one. I think you can install an "e" trans in your car but you will need the trans wiring harness, possibly the entire engine wiring harness, and the pcm from a car that came with an "e" transmission. If your car is an '89 then you will need to find a pcm that used MAF and an "e" transmission. It can be done, search on www.thirdgen.org in the DIY prom section. I'm sure I've seen people talk about doing this. |

in GMHTP they features the ls1 pcm upgrade to gen1 and gen2 sbc
It has the option to get a connector for the 4l60e I have decided to NOT waste money on my 700r4 and just wait until I get this and build a better transmission once |

Remember gents that the internals of a 4l60 are identical to the 700r4/4l60. 95% of the parts interchange.
The 4l60e has an electronic valve body, and has eliminated the governor and tv valve, but 1 is not stronger than the other. |

My local trans guy was saying the E has an aluminum valve body and that lets the case twist more? Any truth to that?

I believe I got the controller for around $750 and I don't remember what I paid for the harness. I bought them at different times as funds became available. Maybe $900 total? Did I tell you I love my 4L60E?

The 4L60E controller reads TPS position, speed and rpm. You set the parameters around those inputs. With light throttle I have it shifting for good economy. I also have the torque converter lock up set at 45mph. With say a 1/4 throttle it goes into "performance" mode. It will downshift and take right off. You can have it down shift at say 75% of maximum rpm. There are tables for each gear. You can set them for what ever you want. Let's say you are cruising along at 50 mph in 4th gear and lock up and nail it. In my case it will unlock the torque converter down shift into 2nd gear and away you go. It will do whatever you have the tables set at. Did I tell you guys I love my 4L60E? |

I may have to compromise and go with a 700r4, my tech says I can manually shift it, to make up for not having the "e" trans
this is still hell of alot easier that having to shift all the time with the ZF what do you think? it saves me 800 bucks is it worth being frugal in this department? |

I thought you were talking about another '89 car. Didn't realize you are talking about swapping an auto into your ZF car. Unless regular drag racing is on your menu, I'd stay with the ZF. They are fun to drive. I have an auto and like it but if I had a 6 speed I'd stay with it. An auto, for tooling around and having fun, just isn't as fun as a stick. If it is a daily driver and you are sick of shifting then do the swap, but I think you will look back and wish you spent the time/effort on something else.

of course it's my ride, i sit in traffic and i had many automatics and i prefer that now that i have around 4000 miles with the Corvette stick, heck even new cars Ferrari's are automatic with paddle shifters, auto is the 21st century! resurrected....
