My spare tire carrier looks a little tired, (pun intended). It's more of a dull blackish then a real black. Two questions:

How hard is it to get that thing off?

And, can it be painted, if so, what paint is good to use?

Thanks.

It's not hard to get off at all. There is a rear bolt that goes up behind the license plate cover. Mine was severely corroded and I had to use a lot of PB blaster to get it off. Other than that it kind of hooks on to two brackets more towards the front of the car. I think you can slip it out, but otherwise just remove those bracket that have two screws each.

As far as paint, it's plastic so I'm thinking one of those spray cans of trim paint from the parts store would work.

Same as what I did to mine and it made a huge difference. Like Matt said, tag the license plate off to access the top fastner and two bolts for each bracket.

If you're going to use trim paint, I'll suggest getting some SEM, their products are very good. A can of their black trim paint is $12.

I'd also suggest washing it with a heavy concentration of Dawn to get rid of any road oil. Depends on what it looks like after washing, but a very lite wet sanding with 400 will help.

Dale, I see it in autobody paint stores and IIRC in AC Delco stores that also sell paint. It's fairly well known.

Online, it's available at TCP Global ( the paintshop, kustom shop that you can get to by clicking the logos to the left).
Or http://www.tcpglobal.com/autobodydepot/semspecial.aspx
Scroll half way down to trim paint, p/n SEM39143 $10.31 for a rattle can.

Also, Duplicolor makes good stuff.
Their trim paint: TP70

Check your yellowpages for autobody supplies.

The use of Dawn dish soap is a great tip...thanks. If your spare tire cover is in goog shape, you can wipe it down with Mother's brand Back in Black. Makes it look good, but won't last as long as a re-paint.

Thanks.
I also use a little squirt in the water when I'm wet sanding. It helps lube the paper, helps the grit to flow away. I use it when preping old paint and restoring old clear. But not with fresh clear.

Krylon Fuzion paint for Plastic.

One can, Matte black did the trick.
I removed the carrier, cleaned it, and spray bombed it.

I've used that for indoor house stuff. It does seem to bite into the plastic very well. I keep a couple cans in the shop.
Never tried it for outdoor stuff though.

Before you go to far with the paint, try the Mop and Glo trick on the plastic parts.

I've used it on the shutters for the kids' playhouse.

The west side (right in the pic) is in the sun constantly.
This is a gloss finish on the shutters, and it's holding up well, going on 5 years.

The can instructions state for indoor/outdoor use, and one advert I saw was specifically for those Little Tykes outdoor play set-ups.

Ha, maybe I'll start reading instructions.

Have you considered truck bed liner?

The liquid stuff is applied with a special roller; leaves a great black finish that isn't damaged by stones or other debris.

Be careful with the bracket bolts... mine did not give easily and one sheared clear off.
