Matatk Confirm I bought the wrong exhaust reducer...

I thought I had a ball/socket hookup on my headers, and I guess I should have checked them better. I ordered the reducer based on this, and they don't mate up properly. Verify I bought the wrong one so I can send it back. I believe I need a three bolt flange/gasket reducer.

Matthew

It certainly would appear so.

Matthew, It won't work either way. You're headers are gasket style and the exhaust pipe fitting is for a ball style like the stock pipes.

Simplest solution would be to cut the ball flange off.
Summit has the collectors w/gaskets and rings for $19/pair
Either weld on or clamp on.

Ref: SUM-G4753, 3" to 3" , you'll have to check for other pipe sizes. These are in the catalog.

Also, looks like a Header Buddy might work.

Thanks guys, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't imagining things. It's my own fault. When I bought the reducers, instead of actually *looking* at my headers (which were in the garage and it was 10 at night) I just looked the headers up on summit and it said they were ball/socket so I ordered ball/socket reducers. Apparently the page is wrong, or since the headers are a few years old they changed the style.

I ordered these:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-21114/

and I need these:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-21100/

I'll send them back later today or tomorrow, they fit in a $5 flat rate box, so that's not too bad.

These are the headers, so you can understand my confusion:

Summit Racing Part Number HED-68440

Header Style Full-length
Header Material Steel
Header Finish Painted
Primary Tube Diameter (in) 1 5/8 in.
Collector Attachment Ball and socket flange
Collector Diameter 3.000 in.

Honestly, i would buy the ball /socket set and cut the flanges off the headers and weld the ball style on there..

the ball and socket is what i used on my 89 and I did then same, I cut the 3 bolt flange off and with the ball and socket style, the sealing was better.

I like this idea too Jeff, the ball and socket style, makes lining/fitting everything else up down the line much easier.. as when you have a slip fit or clamped connection everything must be straight to seal correctly. and it doesn't give you really any room to adjust/align things.

I've done the same, and it works great.

Hedman changed all their headers to ball and socket over the last couple of years.

Nice looking ride.
