I am a man, which by definition means I buy tools. Sometimes I need them, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I think I might need them, even if I am not sure if there will ever come that time. Hence this purchase. Although my abs is fine, I am aware that there may come a day when it isn't. And the only way to test that on my vehicle is with a kent moore j-35890. I've been watching them on ebay for over a year with interest, but not enough interest to spend $100. So recently, I was watching an auction and picked this bad boy up for a steal!

So here's my question:

What tools have you bought for you car, that you really didn't need, but wanted anyway? You might use them in the future, but it was unnecessary at the time.

Discuss.

Matthew

I should add up what I spent on tools just to install my suspension pieces

tap set
additional wrenches
inverse torx sockets
taps that weren't in the tap set, etc.
bolt extractor
drill bits after the extractor didn't work.

Picked up a brake lathe Ammaco with all the bells and whistles for cheap! Did I really need it no! Has it payed me back? yes several times over! I'm that way with power equipment, forget electric pressurer washers I need a 8hp putting out 3200 psi.
For the vette a 3 gauge pillar pod setup with autogage 2 1/16" gauges. Have not put them in yet.
Guys buy tools out of impulse or they need it now! Women shop and browse. I don't browse!
My shop is filled with stuff I don't need, just ask my wife!
Its a guy thing! Why do we need a Corvette when a Pruis will do the samething! Why a 572 big block when a V6 will work just as well! Hmmmmm maybe on to something here. Short Y chromosome... Tools, cars, engines, pizza, beer, girls, burgers, girls..you get the idea.

No, it's an Atlas-Clausing gear drive.

One of these days, I'll have to post a pic of my engine hoist, external pump (like a porta-power) with valving for high speed lift until it hits the load. Dual wheel rear dolly for moving it around.
Big enough to pull a C2 body right off the frame.

I know you are kidding... I should get my digital camera and just shoot most of the stuff sitting down there! Lots of stuff that was used once or I might use it again. I have a table saw I have never cut a sheet of ply on. I have used it a couple times for small stuff but nothing what I had planned. I have a great DeWalt Compound Miter Saw that is awesome. I used it to build a deck and do some crown moldings ten years ago. Its like new. I can go on with that kind of stuff. Its like guns that I never shoot. Why in the heck do we hold on to that stuff if we don't use it? One day it will come in handy. Right?

It's like any other obsession. Some people save magazines and newspapers, some people can't walk by something that's 90% off. Others prefer stockpiling food. Can't forget the guys that have to try and hit every girl that crosses their path. Once you have a tool it's yours. Love it, care for it, cherish it, and it will give you a lifetime of happiness. Name anything else that will treat you that well. They don't eat much either. Recently I almost bought a pry bar set, a rubber mallet and a handful of other tools of which I had no immediate need. My thought was if I ever need it, it's right there. I put them back in the bins. If I need them I can take a short ride up the street and get them or I can ask BillH to sell me one of his extras.

Cause, if you push your 67 Coupe to back of the shop in the early '80s, you know that some day you'll get it out and play with it.

Too bad you're not going to be here on Saturday,BTW.

I'm not really there is such a thing as "extra tools", ya never have enough. Kinda like "extra Corvettes"

On sale at HF for $45.
Unfortunately, it's not a box brake but it's better than nothing.

Needed a 16mm Flare nut wrench. Craftsman had a set from 9mm to 18mm for $35.00. To my surprise they are made in China. I haven't bought Craftsman tools in quite a while but I was under the impression that anything with the Craftsman name was made in the US. Maybe since my last venture to Sears I was abducted by aliens or something.

It's been a while. There was a long post on that 2 years ago, on CF, IIRC.

That $35 set would probably have been $100 if they were still made here.

OK!!! I'm not surprised! I buy things @ HF but they do not carry a 16 or 18mm flare nut wrench. Cornwell and Snap-on want a fortune. I need to tighten my power steering hose fitting I installed Tuesday. Pump side is 16 rack is 18. Tiny drip.

Matt, knows how I buy tools.. I need them for work, and work at home (customers cars)... Last tools I picked up for a steal were a Fluke Scope, and a welder along with a bunch of other tools from another tech that was retireing. Also tools that come in other forms... Like Software, just bought some for building my website, still need to learn it though..

Funny, isn't it? HF's stuff is "Chinese Crap" and some of Craftsman's made there now.
HF's stuff is a lot better than it was 10 years ago but, you still have to look hard at what you're buying.

HF's alum floor jacks work OK (I think Matthew's got one) except for the way they release. I've seen a bunch of guys at the track with the Craftsman alum. racing jacks, they were all leaking.

Some things at HF are worth a little gambling (like throwin' $5 at a slot machine).

I have a good Ingersoll-Rand angle die grinder, $70. There's always a few places where it won't fir and you need a straight grinder. I had a HF coupon and bought a straight air grinder for $4.99. It works, has almost as much power as the IR. If it breaks, I'll throw it away and laugh, it's already done $4.99 worth of work.

Yesterday when I bought the flare nut wrenches one of my old students waited on me. He was telling me most of the new line of slim line tools are made in China under control of US designers. In a very competitive market and the way the economy is, price is everything! Like I said yesterday, I have not shopped at Sears in a long time, the place was empty. BTW if your straight line grinder pukes HF will replace it. I bought a nibber awhile back, broke it and they replaced it no questions asked.

Tools....ahhhhh what a wonderful subject. I'm spending my kids inheritance on tools. I buy lots of tools...mostly for the shop (woodworking side). I have found that having the right tools saves me time...and everyone knows, Time is money. I have some tools in the shop (both wood and auto) that have never been used. I have some that have been used once or twice. I have some that I bought thinking "I might need that some day" and then was damn glad that I had it on that day. My wife doesn't say much, it helps that I can use them as business deductions.

Now on the HF. I buy quite a few tools from HF. Yes I know that the quality maybe isn't what "Made in the USA" tools are, but most of the tools I buy from HF are my auto mech tools, and I don't use them day in and day out, so they are quite suitable for that type of use. If I was a professional mechanic, depending on those tools for my livelihood, I'd probably buy higher quality tools. I have one of those aluminum jacks, it has worked flawlessly for me for 5 years now. Do I use it everyday? No. Would it still work flawlessly if I did? Who knows, maybe, maybe not. But for $59, who cares? Sears and nearly everyone else has been forced to start doing business in China. The quality of tools coming out of there has improved dramatically in the past 20 years. Lifetime warranty on many tools that you buy there.

I have a 20" planer that I bought from Grizzly tools. Heavy 800 lbs, powerful 3 hp, to buy an American made tool of equal capacity, I would have had to pay 5 times what I paid for that one. I can say that it is one tough tool.

So back on track, yes I have bought tools that I didn't have an immediate use for, and I'm glad that I did/do.

I love HF. I just pick and choose the tools that come from there. I've had no complaints about the Pittsburgh sockets and wrenches.

Earlier this year, on one of my KC trips, my daughter said that her car (Olds Alero) sounded funny. After driving it, I figured it was the front wheel bearing. I had few tools there, so in order to fix it I went to the parts store to pick up the parts. I find it needs a 35mm socket to take the nut off. The parts store has the single 1/2" drive socket for $25....I told my SIL "Lets go to HF", at HF I buy a complete 3/4" set for $49. Was a no brainer. I have been very happy with my Pittsburg wrenches.

I have abused Pittsburgh sockets with breaker bars and impact tools. HF replaces them no questions asked. On one occassion they replaced the whole set because of one cracked socket.
I noticed their composite rachet wrenches @ 6.99 for a 3/8 drive looks alot like the Snapon one for mega bucks.
