On the Vette I go every season. So I will change it in late November and be ready for spring. I use Mobil 1. My other cars I go about 5000 between changes. The GM vehicles have the oil change service feature and I usually go when it hits 50%.

Back in the day I changed every 2000 then went to 3000 and now 5K. More than that and I get to feeling bad about it.

About two years ago I broke the 3,000 mile habit now its 4,500 to 5,000 miles. One of my neighbors is a chemical engineer and his lab has the facilities to test oil. My 89 S-10 with Mobil 1 after 3,000miles had depleaded the dispersates by only 26% @ 4,000 miles 47% and @ 5,000 miles 61% and other criteria of metals and bearing material was slight. I usually don't go beyond 5,000 miles. Other synthetics that I have had tested over the years have not faired as well. The 87 Vette is a seasonal thing.

I do the Vette and the Jeep about every 6 months... for the Vette, it's about 2000 city street miles; for the Jeep, about 5000 freeway miles.

I usually run synthetic blends in my 90 and 91 and dino oil in the 911s. Since the cars only get an average of 1500 miles per year. I usually change them once a year. How long is oil stable? I also look for clarity and consistancy. The Yukon I usually do between 3500 and 4000. I'm a real risk taker. The diesel Silverados computer lets you know when it's dirty and how much oil life and filter life you have left. I still believe changing oil as needed is the best preventative maintenance you can do. External engine parts don't set you back near as much as internal engine parts.

I havent made it to an interval without taking something apart.

1200 miles in Head swap so changed the oil
3500 miles in oil pan gasket leak
5-6000 miles in cam/intake swap
8000 miles chasing down a valve cover leak changed a lot of oil
10000 miles in now so getting close to my first interval change

How black does it look at 3k, 4k, 5k?

That's what gets me changing mine, is the thick black color, by 3K. My engine is dirty though, has blowby contaminating the oil, and the diesel oil probably isn't the best choice with all the detergents.
