What say ye. Is ist just me or do you find that people want to show up for work but many don't put forth any great effort. No pride in their accomlishments, no stamina, no self motivation. Is service gone from the service industry?
My wife had been looking to hire an office/field person. Handle the occasional phone call, invoicing, help walkin customers and other keep busy work, like sweep the office etc. She has a hell of a time finding landscapers who want to work for the money and learn about plants. When she loses her #1 guy and she will lose him, it's gonna get rough. I told her to get in a guy now so he can help train him instead of taking in someone later that has to taught from the ground up. She really pays according to ability. Work hard and there's always a little something extra in it for them. I just know when I was in my teens and through my carrer I busted my ass. I have a work ethic that I carry through my life. Is there still a work ethic today? / rant off.

I'm in, Tommy. How much do you pay? The commute might be tough for me, though.

Hard to say... I think a few of these lazy bastards take a job to keep daddy happy, then when they get fired, play the victim.

This is when daddy should go visit the employer and get a sense from their boss what kind of employee the brat was like.

Technology has created a lazy society... a sense of entitlement has only made it worse.

I'm lazy. So the boss rides my ass when I'm not productive.

Just pay me less, it will be much easier for both of us!

I believe if pay was treated more flexibly, and based more on value, and not crap like seniority, job title, or degrees...

Then you could just pay unproductive workers less until they either went away or worked harder.

That's what I was saying. Then they get a little extra. Call it profit sharing if you like.

We would get fired if we were lazy. Or worse the boss would
get in our face and scream at us. Back then we had a healthy fear of authority figures.

I worked on a farm when I was 12, wanted a car.
I was pumping gas at 13.
I worked in the ammunition area on an Army base at 16, the igloos were out in the boonies, the full time guys there would drive out into the trees after lunch so they could get an hour's nap almost every day.

I was a sales engineer for 20 years, on the phone to the east coast at 5:30 a.m. every day to catch managers at their desk. In the San Francisco district about 1/4 of the guys would start work at 8:00 a.m. like it was inconceivable for them to work more than 40 hours/week. The rest of us worked 60, we made big bucks. The 1/4 who went to work at 8 always whined about not making money and most of them didn't last very long.

Work Hard, Play Harder

True, but that kind of motivation only lasts for a week or so.

Anyhow, I am the entitled bastard you are all talking about. Work as hard as needed, put out good work when and where I feel like it, but not on command or necessarily when someone else needs it. I didn't start working until 18. About the only thing I have working against me was working part time to pay for half of my college expenses during college, and not burdening my parents after age 18 for anything. That was the only honorable part.

Maybe I'll look for a government job.

That sums up my life.

For me the work ethic of people these days has gone to the crapper. I learned from my dad who has been on his, until they went under, job for 45 years, that busting butt, loyalty, will get you far. Well that is to me somewhat the truth. Me being with a family run business, that is celebrating their 100th aniversary, I have been with them almost 33 years, and am their plant manager. Hiring people has been hell, just trying to find someone legal, and not on drugs, is a nightmare. Sad to say if a white guy comes in, all they want to do is put in there 8 hours and give em a check, no matter what they dont get done. Now I have what I call Americanized Mexicans. I hope I don't offend anyone, but they are having the same attitude, that we owe them bigtime for working for us. An example, I have a great guy that learns fast, cares about the production, the cross training, and everything. I thought I would eventually move him to foreman. Been giving him raises and all all along. Next thing I find out, is he is saying that I want a raise, and want it soon or I will leave, cause I have been learning alot, WTF??? Sorry if I offended anyone, Rant over Mark

Here is my other complaint... I have done the hard work. I have sweated bullets for my job, only to be reminded I have flaws and those flaws are being held against me so I don't get a raise.

It is a two way street... Some employers will pay fairly, others will milk you until you die. And then want an excuse for your death.

I agree with you Andy, not from my experience, but from people that are close to me. And what I get from them is that the employers that are employing them, are not, crap how do I say it.... loss for words...My sister for example, working for a big company, busts her ass, turned around their sales bigtime, have her on a salary, making her work overtime, and on Saturdays, with no pay increases, nothing, zilch nada, not even a atta boy. Jewish owners. Again, no offense to anyone!!!!! Just greedy fricking people. Mark

Sorry to say but that sounds like too many chiefs and not enough indians. (Not meant to offend indians). As for the case of people that bust their ass and get no appreciation, there is always job hunting or even paying a head hunter to locate a better paying position. It always feels good to hand an obuser a 2 week notice.
In past generations the new immigrants often bore the labor intensive positions. The Chinese, Irish, Italians, Mexicans and others plus the ignorant (uneducated) native born all played roles in the buiding of America.
It was not uncommon that people actually tried to please other people. Today it's more about pleasing oneself. What's in it for me? Americans have high expectations. The reality is those expectations can only be fulfilled with hard work and a good education. Unless of course Mommy and Daddy, Grandma and Grampa take pity on them (which they often do). Poor babies ....

That used to be the case. My dad was "loyal" to the company he worked at for 15 years....until they decided to fire everyone, close the doors, and move out of country. Where was the loyalty in return? He got screwed.

I was the Servive Director for a Stealership for 2 years.
Want a real bitch? Try hiring mechanics.
You get 10 applicants - 5 slobs who don't even know what ASE is, 4 primadonnas who demand things before they're even hired and if you're lucky, very lucky, one tech whose ASE certified and really wants to work.

Oh ya! I forgot to mention, having family work for us has never worked out. Hell I don't even work out. Her only bonus with me is I do it because it's her (ours due to marriage and proprietary laws) company. All the profits come home so I have a vested interest. She'll lay the guilt card on me if I slack too much.

Working with family is hard enough. It's harder when you're the boss and your family are "employees".
