Ok, I am soon to be putting on headers from Exotic headers on to my LT1- 1994 vette. It has been recommended that when I do this I get a tune up- being new to the LT! does this mean plugs, wires, timing, as we did with the "old" small block? Do you do anything to/ with the computer? having asked this, your ? is , is the motor stock or basically stock?- yes, it is so far. Time , money , research, and a wife with a sense of humor will determine how far I can go.
Cheers,
Also, for those in Michigan area this Saturday is the Grand Haven Coast Guard car show/ cruise- In. begins 7:30- 2:30.
$10. registration.
Aug. 13 is Coopersville Del Shannon car show w/ approx. 700 cars usually showing up- unless it rains.
Aug. 20 - Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit.
Cheers!

It is simply an easy time to change the plugs and wires, and also the fuel filter. No reason to do anymore than that.

There's no timing to check, the ECM controls it.

Plugs - NGK TR55
Wires - Taylor SpiroPro , they're much better than stock as far as long life, the LT sets fit perfectly.
Best prices are at Summit Racing.

If you know where you can get a power steering pully puller (or buy one for $25), it saves a lot of time when doing the wires, lets you get to and see the wire connections on the opti (drivers side).

Bill I think there is some confusion on the term "tune". In your IM to me I stated that a tune after headers could be warranted if other mods were incorporated. The tune I was referring to is when the engine parameters are modified in the cars computer. Sometimes a computer tune can even help a near stock engine with headers and cold air intake.

Did you buy headers that incorporate the factory AIR system and EGR, or delete those?

As indicated, no messing with the timing, it's computer controlled and runs with the optispark.

To help get to the opti I had removed the belt tensioner arm/pulley. It is still at tight fit to get to, but not bad. Just be sure not to mix up the wires.

Wow! thanks for al the input-
1. Don - in the Pm I was assuming a tune up and in my mind it is like a mid-60s small block. No mods to the engine other than adding headers. thanks, Don
2.Bill H. thanks for the parts # and source for the wires. Will be on the Summit website.
3, tjpreul- I am sure I have no clue about your response but will have someone who does guide me through it.
4. Matatk- Ordered themn w/ AIR fittings. originally 2was going to do so w/out fittings but changed my mind.
Have to realize I am a ROOKIE at the mechanical aspect. I am a good detailer, grease monkey, and am learning about the LT1.
Hope this helps , I appreciate all the input.

When you look at the wires, note that you can get them in different colors.

The routing that TJ is talking about is on the drivers side of the opti. It's easier to pull the belt and the tensioner to get the wires on the opti.
The drivers side is somewhat of a pain because the wires go behing the power steering pump.

Also the coil wire sits on top of the opti, under the waterpump. If the old wires have the black, plastic protector around the wire, see if you can reuse it.

For what it is worth:

Part number on the wires is: 74225
TR55 plugs: Get the 'G Power' version.
Fuel filter - use the AC Delco one.

Put some dialectric grease on both ends of the plug wires and anitseize on the plug threads.

Sorry about that. Bill has it right. When installed the wires are hard to see behind the pump. Be sure you have them labeled so they don't get crossed in this area.

I recommend the green.

Green wires have less resistance to electrical flow, hotter spark......

Ah.......that's just Tyler.......his thing is green, in the engine bay.

He'll have to post a pic.

I went through this a while ago while changing the waterpump. I decided to change plugs and wires while at it.
Definitely do as Bill suggests and remove the pulley from the PS Pump. Get a quality puller or better, rent it from Advance, Autozone or whoever the parts store is in your area...I don't remember what's up there, having moved from Bloomfield Hills a long while back... I think the Harbor Freight set is as good as any other. At least it seems the same as the Advance set they rent/sell.

You will still have to run the wires behind/under that pump but it makes life so much easier. I also put a new tensioner in and suggest you get one of those belt tools at Sears which makes putting the new belt on so much easier.

The plug that gave the most problems was the one on the passenger side, closest to the fire wall. It is tight, tight, tight. I had a hell of a time and used all the tricks suggested. Still needed one of our exchange students with tiny hands to get the plug on and the boot on. Try all the tricks you read about and see which one works best. Keep track of all the screws you take out when disassembling WAIT, do all those issues with the plug go away when installing headers??

Performance Parts GM puller # W87022 works well but you may have to shorted the shaft that goes into the pulley (easy to do).

I've seen them in Pep boys, etc. Also available at Summit.
About $25

It pulls and installs the pulley.

Yes, I like green. I was wanting something that was different, because everyone has red. My car is white so it worked. I painted the calipers green, put on green wires and painted the "Corvette" on the fuel rail covers green. Oh and my plate says LIM GRN. However that is all because I don't want to go too overboard.

With the stock manifolds off and before the headers go on everything is much, much easier. Never heard of green wires being better before.

Doesn't matter but NGK plugs are much better than the Delcos now. The Delcos are made in China and the NGK are made in Japan....Which do YOU think will be better in the long run?

They are the manufacturer's part numbers. No need to buy from Summitt unless they have the best price. Check the local auto parts stores.
