what are you suppose to put on the threads for the exhaust manifold bolts?

also, if the gaskets only have like 50 miles on them, can I just reuse the old ones?

thanks guys!

I don't put anything on them... anti seize will screw up the torque rating...

As for the gaskets? Reuse'm... should be fine.

Don't use anti-seize compound.

fsm says about 19lb-ft for stock. afr webpage says don't use a torque wrench just snug up hand tight with a wrench only. seems good to me... what I was going to do anyways, pull on it until it "felt right". *shrugs*.

thanks again guys

I disagree. I use anti seize on my header bolts. That along with stainless steel cap screws with lock washers.

The gaskets depend. I use Percy's reusable gaskets. If you have cheap style header gaskets, replace them. They aren't that expensive.

I am careful when torquing into aluminum. And I have broken an OEM exhaust bolt when using anti-seize! Took the head right off.

If you decide to use anti-seize, take the torque from 19 to about 12 lb-ft. Figure that half the battle with torque is consistency and the issue here is that A-S will increase the specific torque by half - meaning 19 becomes 28. This would mean that 12 becomes 18 and everyone is really happy.

I make sure I have enough thread to go into the head. Most headers come with 3/4" bolts. I used 1" S/S allen head bolts because my flange was thicker than most. The allen head makes it easier to torque each bolt. Also, use a quality thread chaser to clean out the holes. Gaskets, I use the "dead" aluminum or copper gaskets. No leaks in 7 years.

The LT4 FSM calls for 30 lbs-ft.

The FSM torque spec. would be for factory gaskets, bolts, etc.
Might it not be different for a performance upgrade?
Also, iron vs. alum. heads, don't know what the O.P.'s are.

I have to agree with just tightening them up by feel. I have seen to many striped threads in aluminum to trust using a torque wrench on most aluminum parts..The only time I use torque wrenches on aluminum is putting on the intake base. I also don't use antiseize on the exhaust threads....WW

Raises a question in my mind about numerous removal, inspection, install of washer type spark plugs using anti-seize in aluminum heads. Not to get off track.

Think of the VW spark plugs blowing out of their heads. They make a Helicoil to put on the spark plug to screw right back in. Aluminum has a heat effect it is a good and bad material around heat.

i've never heard of people using anti-seize on the spark plugs....

I wouldn't do it personally. the spark plugs are really fine thread and use a clean steal thread that gets changed semi-regularly - i.e. a good seat. your exhaust manifold bolts... well, lol, you look at them and they are kind of grody usually coming with a minimum of at aleast a little rust or something on em. lol.....

It seems to be generally recommended. Here is one thread of many.

Geeze Guys.
Get the ARP catalog/technical data book.

Never put steel into aluminum without antisieze, especially sparkplugs, torque appropiately.

Tighten by feel? That's why they sell Helicoils and replacement studs/bolts.

I always use anti seize on spark plugs
