Would like everybody's take on K&N Filters. I had one in my 1997 GMC Sierra and it didn't turn out so well. The treatment fluid got on the map sensor and turned my engine into an effective anchor. $3200 mistake. I was told this couldn't happen but I lived it and saw it happen. Overtreatment? Possibly although I followed the directions pretty closely.

Thanks in advance. With all that said "Whats your take"?

K&N filters are great for racing or high performance driving, but they just don't keep the throttle body as clean as the paper filter.

Yep, agreed.

I use them on the race cars but wouldn't use them on the street.

And soooooooooooooooooo many people over oil the darn things. It's not a situation where more is better.

I've used K&N in ALL my cars for more than 10 years now, NEVER had a problem. Just keep them clean and DON'T over oil.

I used to use them on everything then saw some data that showed a good paper element flowed just as good or better but plugged up faster. The K&N flowed better as time and dirt accumulated. I will put a new paper filter on each spring on the C5.

I had heard the oil did/does get on the MAF sensor, causing incorrect readings.
I may just clean mine and not put the oil on it. Not like I drive it much here in Hawaii. LOL

The K&N sure looks cool though doesn't it, especially with a cut lid. My '91 came with one, but I switched to a paper filter with a piece of 1/4" filter media over it for looks after reading this.
http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html
Quote from the test: "Compared to the AC, The K&N "plugged up" nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt".
The C4 is a "bottom feeder".
On the other hand, most Corvettes aren't exactly driven in off road conditions so I think the K&N is probably adequate if maintained properly.

I don't recommend it.

Overhyped claims, and poor filtering. Independent tests online have shown this. K&N spends a lot of money on advertising to try and convince you otherwise.

You might as well drive with no filter at all then. The oil is the only thing that gets it close to reasonable. It's just impossible to apply a consistent amount of oil on tight pleats, and I can still see daylight through it afterwards anyways.

Why not just get a paper one?

Its been in this car since 1996. Never heard or read anything bad till lately.
And paper is 40 bucks out here. I will get one eventually..

Used K&N for a few years in my Chevy Construction Trucks. Over oiling was not an issue because of throttle body injection. Oil would be ingested and burned. In 2004 had issues with the K&N after one month in the 87 vette. Oil film coated the MAF and created idling and surging problems. Replaced K&N with a stock AC filter.
I must admit the trucks with the K&N did get better mileage, exception was the 1 ton when I plowed snow, nothing helps in that situation.

I haven't had any issues with mine... and the aspect I like is the reuse bit... not throwing one away every year. It's a bonus.

I don't have a MAF, so the oiling doesn't matter. Once the extra oil blows off, clean the MAF and it should be ok.

One other thing, Cummins does NOT recommend using K&N air filters on their engines; the filters don't filter down enough.

That was the cost of having a machine shop rebuild the engine, new radiator and such plus labor. I thought it was a bit pricey but after 50k miles this new engines still sounds great.

With all of this said how does this green filter compare?

Probably about the same, others have been "me too-ing" K&N since the 70's.

All these filters are great-----for racecars where they're cleaned every hour and a half and where the engines will be taken apart every year.

I've heard second hand they are better quality and the surround seals better, but it's still a substandard design IMO.

Honestly nobody should hesitate to spend more money on the paper filter, they perform better.

Thanks to all for your inputs. I'm going to try the paper filter for awhile then shift back to the K&N just to see the difference. Currently I'm having idle and surge problems (albeit minor). Will let you all know the outcome.

Decided to use the existing K&N so I cleaned and treated the K&N with the K&N cleaner and treatment stuff. Still have the puff of smoke on start up and the idle seems a bit better but not smooth yet.

Sparks plugs are next (see new thread) then maybe a distributor check up.

Once I get going the engine runs fantastic.

This is an interesting thread. I have read this topic a dozen other times but I have been thinking a lot about this as well as I drive my new engine more and more. I have been using three K&N cone filters on an SLP Claw type intake tube. It doesn't appear to get more dirty than before when I had a factory air box on it. I'd like to know if there are better filters out there than K&N that would work with my SLP tubes as the factory air box is warped and never sealed very well anyhow. I have seen more than one C4 with a factory air box and a poorly seated or ill fitting paper filter allowing air through without being filtered.

Tell ya what - in the end, it don't matter a bit. Anymore than I use $17 dollar a qt. Amzol and my engine's gonna last longer than if I used Mobil 1.

K&N, paper, others --- there just isn't enough difference with the exception that fabric can be over oiled.

My Silverado's at 140k miles, doesn't use oil blah, blah, blah and is on it's 3rd paper filter.

And the extra air flow claims - doesn't mean jack on the street.

Paper filter here.
I do have a K&N Filter Charger kit that was never used. Has the cleaner and oil in it and can be used for several cleanings and reoilings.
Freebie - just pay me for the UPS shipping as USPS will not let you mail aerosol cans (I think).

Nice offer! Thanks but I have those as well. I just treated my K&N and the rough idle seemed to be a bit smoother. Going to give it a couple of months and go to paper. My guess is there isn't going to be a noticeable difference.

The air filter won't have any effect on idle.

Have you cleaned the MAF? Recalibrated the IAC and cleaned the IAC passage? Reset the TPS adjustment and base idle?

An engine rebuild by a machine shop. Quote started out at $2000.00 then when I went to pick it up it was $3200.00. It needed a new this and a new that....... Thing that really pissed me off was the exhaust "tick" was still there after the build.
