I am looking to get a floor jack. Do i really need to get a low profile one if I use the designate jack points? Vette is not lowered.
Any recommendations on branch/model? thanx gary |

Before I got two little low profile jacks, I would drive onto four wood blocks to allow my big jack under the car. I used 2x10's and cut them to 12".
BTW I don't ever crawl under a car supported only with jacks but I do raise one side of the car with my little jacks, place stands at key points and rotate the tires front to back while the weight of the car is still on the jacks. I know it isn't following the rules according to Hoyle but it's easier than transfering the weight to the stands. Anyone else cheat? |

I got NAPA's low-profile jack for around $200, and am happy with it so far. I know a guy who recently got an Arcan model XL35 from Northern Tool for $129, and likes it a lot.

Yes I sometimes cheat leaving weight on the jack for a quick rotation. It shouldn't hurt as long as the stands are on standby. Whoever did my rotation put the 9.5s on the front and the 8.5s on the rear. I haven't looked yet to see if it is a Z51 or if the previous owner changed wheels. I shall now cease communication. I have an El Cheapo Harbor Freight $79.00, it lifts the car, jack stands go under at the four corners. I still have my hands and feet, I shall cease at this point.

I just got two new jacks from
Harbor Freight for Christmas. They are made for cars such as our Vettes. They have two supports that go on each side of the tire and lift the car that way. You can't "cheat" then, you have to put stands under the car to get the wheels off. I would include a link but I can't find them on the HF website. If anyone is interested I can take some pics of mine. |

Quote: Dang, I couldn't find those darn things anywhere, thanks. I've never had mine all the way up yet but I've had it high enough to go in from the front and change oil, and I'm a BIG guy. I was amazed at how steady they are that base isn't very big. If I were lifting the rear though I would definitely use wheel chocks. I had my family get me a pair so I could lift one end at a time and keeping the car level. |
