You want a 40" wide box?

You can find a lot in that price range on CL used...that's where I found mine.

Do you have a link for the one you were looking at from the hardware store?

Don't buy the lowes one... I recently was looking for one as well at home since I had 2 boxes and wanted to move into one large box, I looked at that again but it's crap as far as quality goes.. it looks pretty and if you hardly use your tools and, don't plan on loading up the drawers it may work for you... but check the reviews, the slides break often, and the locking mechanism fails which is not serviceable... I think it has a 3 year warranty, and they will send you replacements but after that?

I looked at used snap-on boxes which are great but everyone wanted an arm and a leg for them of course and most were older boxes that were dented and banged up from use over the years.. I looked at craftsman, again but wasn't really impressed.. I looked at harbor freight and found one I liked but they do not make a top box for it. It had some good reviews and I looked at it in person nice box at an awesome price.. of course only 11 drawers...
http://www.harborfreight.com/hand-too ... roller-cabinet-67681.html

while I was at sears, I found they had another line of boxes from Viper Tool Storage, I didn't know much about the box, but it was on sale, was the size I was looking for, and had a lifetime warranty on the slides, locks, and casters basically all your wear items.. they have many different boxes and options there. I contacted the company that makes them, and the owner responded back to me the next day. yes they are made over seas but they are a nice quality box.. especially for the price it was probably 1/4 or less then the similar size snap-on I have at work. They can also custom build you a box. And they said they could make on in the US and even custom build it for me but it would cost alot more..

Here is a article I wrote about mine with a pic 18 drawers I think though on mine..
http://autoserviceupdated.blogspot.co ... 2/viper-tool-storage.html

http://vipertoolstorage.com/

Hope that helps...

I had heard that some people had problems with that tool box. I had problems with my snap on.

Was it because of the weight capicity of the drawers?

Yes, the lowes box has cheap slides that can't handle the weight..

What kind of problems did you have with the snap-on? they are warrantied for life only problem is if your not in a shop where you have a snap-on guy you may have a hard time with warranty? I'm not sure maybe you can e-mail or send it in and they will mail you whatever part but I've never tried that..

My 12 year old snap on box, hasn't had too many issues, I rolled mine around the shop for the majority of that time.. and I only had to warranty a couple slides that were damaged when I took the drawers out to move the box. and the lock and roll or (whatever thay call them) plastic slides that keep the drawer shut that were worn.. other then that no problem and I use it 5 days a week...

Sears opens in about an hour here I will go look.

The only problem with Sears is how long will they and Kmart be in Business??

Why would you care, Steve. It's just sheet metal with drawer slides and you can buy drawer slides.

I have 40 year old Proto boxes that work no different than they did new.

I also have one of the cheaper Sears rollers, This roller goes into the race trailer, gets banged around every time it gets pulled out (every race) over the 3 in deep gap on the trailer ramp door, And it's totally overloaded with tools. Still works like day one, was cheap, no ball bearing slides, etc.

If I wanted another box, I get a Sears on sale.

Doesn't really look like it meets your desire for multiple drawers.

I don't like the open space at the bottom, I don't store my saws, etc, in my toolbox.

It's interesting... but I was at Harbor Freight recently. And their US General line of large rollers has improved in quality a LOT.

The fit and finish is now up there with the rest. What I don't know - and am almost afraid to ask - what is the quality and durability like... yuck.

As for Sears/KMart? I am willing to bet that whomever it is that makes Craftsman tools will be right there to keep up that brand name. Viper isn't Sears only, so that eases that fear. And if you haven't noticed, Craftsman is becoming available in more and more stores:

Sears
Kmart
Orchard Supply Hardware
Fastenal
US military AAFES stores
Summit Racing Equipment
Ace Hardware

From my research, I found there is a Craftsman industrial line, sold buy Grainger.

I avoid anything made under the "Companion" brand. Absolute garbage.

I just went out and looked at this one packed with Harbor Freight tools for $1500. One year old.Don't need tools and the cabnet was really easy to dent. Never heard of Excel 21 Drawer Roller Metal Locking Tool Combo. Any body know anything about them. Liked the drawers.

Kennedy are excellent boxes. Almost all of my dad's boxes are Kennedy. He is a professional journeyman toolmaker. So they have all seen heavy shop use.

They are expensive, though.

I ran across this brand today. I had never heard of it, but seems to get really good reviews. A little pricey, but I found a local place to me on CL that seems to sell dented ones extra cheap.

Sorta funny you knew what I was doing today. Stopped by Sears again to look at the Viper I think it was. Sears doesn't carry it any more in Bakersfield. could order one on line. Very slow mover for some reason..

I liked this Extreme one for the price and free shiping.

I like the better quality craftsman boxes. The cheap ones are, cheap...lol. That harbor freight mechanics style box has been getting good reviews, though, so that's another inexpensive option.
