Austin Carroll, Indiana High School Student, Expelled For Tweeting Profanity

Posted: 03/25/2012 1:32 pm Updated: 03/25/2012 1:32 pm

An Indiana high school senior has been expelled for a Tweet he says was posted from home on his personal account.

"One of my tweets was, f--- is one of this f---ing words you can f---ing put anywhere in a f---ing sentence and it still f---ing makes sense," Garrett High School senior Austin Carroll told Indiana's NewsCenter.

The expulsion comes when Carroll is on the home stretch toward graduation. Carroll's mother Pam Smith said she doesn't agree with her son's Tweet, but doesn't agree with an expulsion either. To her, a suspension lasting several days is more appropriate.

Carroll says he doesn't think he should be punished by the school for what he posts on his own time and on his own computer. The student is finishing high school at an alternative school and will be able to graduate.....(more on link)

Hmmmmmm.......I don't know what gives the school the right to do that if it was on his own time and not on campus. On the other hand I don't get tweeting and I'm sure the school is on edge because of the other incident involving the principle. Still it seems a little harsh and I agree a suspension whould have sent a message.....but we don't know the whole fu.....err uh, story.

Yet another reason, I'm glad I grew up when I did.

Anyway,

Almost a double edged sword, huh?
They're messing with this kid's right to privacy.
But kids impersonating a principle (or anyone) & doing tweets is......slander (and illegal).

Thought police and the end of personal freedoms.....what that kid was saying did not have anything to do with the school as far as I can tell......

I don't agree with the expulsion. Now if the tweet was directed at the school then a suspension may be ok. Just goes to show to think before you tweet. What has been tweeted cannot be untweeted. Once tweeted and in public view it is no longer private. JMHO.

You can pretty much say whatever you want here. That's my golden rule. As long as it isn't a lie or a deep personal attack.

As for this, what grounds does the school have to expel - EXPEL - a student for something they did off grounds, outside of classes, away from campus, on personal time? Do they have a code of conduct no one has mentioned? And if so, what kind of draconian crack smoker thought that up?

It's more endemic of our times than I care to admit. People are so damned politically correct these days, and another chunk are so damned sensitive these days, that no one day say a word without it causing a shit storm. And that bothers me.

Natural debate is being taken away and replaced with walking on eggshells. Corporate America has eroded ones right to free speech to such a point as to request (as mentioned above) ones facebook page log in credentials. Professional athletes of just about any flavour are now so tied down, that anything they say which doesn't support the party line becomes an offense, subject to fines and or suspension.

I mean, look at Corvette Forum? They are about the worst offenders. They are so damned anal, they don't want to hurt the feelings of their sponsors. Protectionism at its finest. Argh.

All of this is taking away our right to be ourselves. It is forcing people to mold into a pattern that satisfies the system, not the ideals of our forefathers. Compliance to law, honor of rules, all of that is fine, but when they start to truly impinge on ones life and ability to communicate freely, then there is a problem.

My former employer had the motto, and I paraphrase, "shattering expectations!" Sure, sounds idealistic, but I was told that if certain folks in the company heard my slightly democratic political views, I could be fired. I wasn't impressed, to be honest. I responded to that threat with something like this: If those people held such sway, and were so afraid of anyone challenging their beliefs, then this company has bigger problems than anyone can ever hope to fix.

This company also wanted to hire people for their individuality and ability to invent with new ideas... only to break you down and make you fit their ideal. In short, hypocrites. They had some great people working there, but from what I hear, now several years later, most are just simply broken.

I just found out that the computer he tweeted that on was school owned property. This is not the first time it had happened. First was done at school the second was done at home. My co-worker knows a little more about it than what we have read.

It's unfortunate but that happens alot now Andy.

I love how fear guides us. Are we REALLY that scared of thoughts different to our own?

If it's a school owned laptop they can set whatever rules they want. Still seems over the top.

I have 3 words to say and you know they're coming...
FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS

...Not on school property? No right to dicipline. Sounds like there will be a Civil Rights case you wait and see. Not that I agree with everything those zealots do either, but this one just makes sense.

If there is slander involved, that is a personal law suit for the principal to file on his own behalf.

What a can of worms this could get to be.
