Dave is building me the 383. I have a question about putting in oil pan 5 quart. Is there a problem with room for it to fit. My vet was lowered an 1".
What pan did you use. I also looked at this 6 quart http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MOR ... 7c1987%7cModel%7cCORVETTE Steve |

I would get a Canton pan. It has to be installed once the engine is in the car, but it is more than high enough to be safe from road damage.
It also has trap doors to help cut down on oil slosh. |

I used my stock pan. In 20/20 hindsight, I would have preferred a nice canton pan. But cost was a factor at the time. So you can do either.

Will used the stock pan on mine, again, as said above, it was a cost issue. But there was no clearance issues with it. It bolted right on. Its my understanding alot of that is based on what rods you are using.

I'm not sure that's true about installing the pan once the motor is in the car.. It's been a while since I installed one, from my memory I thought accessing some of the pan bolts with the motor in the car was extremely difficult due to the shape of the canton pan and that the motor must be removed to remove the pan.. or atleast it would be much easier then trying to remove while the motor was installed.... -=Rick |

From the other link (I've done it twice. PIA but possible. Gotta remove the cats if you still have them on the car. I also removed the diagonal cross-braces that run from the frame rails to the front cross-member. Every extra inch helps. You'll need to jack up the engine ~1" so the pan clears in front during the install) They are confusing as I am . My cats are welded on. Does this other guy know what he is talking about. Before we install it on or off ? I have never seen one installed. Is there one on utube. I am at a shool confrence on my lunch right now. I don't forsee any problems if it installed beforhand. Don't want to have to pull it back out if there is a problem with install. |

I used a different brand, but the dimensions are very close. The pan was installed on the motor before I put it in the car. I didn't have any issues. Before I installed the starter I put the headers on to be sure it could be done. There were no issues putting the starter on. The cross member is close, and I didn't look at the clearence with the stock pan.
Here are the measurements of the pan I used. http://www.champpans.com/index.cfm?event=productdetail&id=103 |

Just an FYI my builder had the pan on when he installed my engine.
(see 1st pic) Not sure about the cross braces, they needed to be removed in order to pull the lower control arms for rebuilding with Del-Alum bushings. I know with the stock pan you can pull it on the car, though you may need to rotate the crank. |

when the transmission get here we will see if the Howell hydraulic bearing for stock clutches and the master cylinder fit or I can try the T5 style. Can't remember the face of the transmission from Kessler looks like right now. To fit the 3/4 " cylinder to wall the mounting plate will have to be drilled for it to mount as the stock is a different angle

The pan uses studs . I got washers and on the pan side ground them down to clear the inside lipe of the pan.ground
the skirt of the nut down and made clearance for the nut. Had to use wrench to tighten nut down as socket would lodge against the pan inner edge. |

You're already planning to install it while the motor is out, but for future readers, there is NO way to install a Canton pan in a C4 with the motor in the car unless you jack the front of the engine up several inches. I've done it three times (twice on my '93 and once a friend's '87) and both times I wished I had pulled the motor, although the '87 was MUCH easier than the LT1. The front of the pan hits the front main studs no matter what.
Then, once the pan is in place, it will take you two hours and you will fill your swear jar trying to get the gasket in there properly. You can not slide the pan up into place with the gasket on it, you will knock it off the front of the pan. It must go in after the fact and your fingers spend a LOT of time in between the frame and the block. Every second of that process made me nervous about my harbor freight engine hoist dropping the engine on my fingers and removing them... Even with jacking the front of the motor up it is a major PITA. At the very least you have to remove the whole passenger side of the motor (header, starter) to get to the bolts on that side between the wing and the block. They can not be reached from the bottom as the wing is in the way. If you use the stock oil pan rails you won't have issues with the nuts. Pan was a tight fit and I am glad it was on engine when installed.Oil cooler had no clearance problems. When there is time to put in the transmission we will see how low the pan is. Replacing plugs and anything needs fixing first.
