Good morning gang.

It's midterm elections. Remember to get out and VOTE.

Should be mostly cloudy today with some showers on and off. Temps in the upper 40's to lower 50's.

Word of the Day Tuesday, November 04, 2014

kickshaw \ KIK-shaw \, noun;

1.a tidbit or delicacy, especially one served as an appetizer or hors d'oeuvre.

2.something showy but without value; trinket; trifle.

Origin:

Kickshaw comes from an English pronunciation of quelque chose meaning "something" or "a little something." It entered English in the late 1500s.

Today is NATIONAL CANDY DAY

Enthusiastically each year on November 4, people of all ages celebrate National Candy Day.

Candies come in numerous colors, shapes, sizes and varieties and have a long history in popular culture.

It was in the late 13th century that the Middle English word candy began to be used, coming into English from the Old French cucre candi, derived in turn from Persian Qand and Qandi, “cane sugar”.

People use candy as a broad category that includes candy bars, chocolates, licorice, sour candies, salty candies, tart candies, hard candies, taffies, gumdrops, marshmallows and much more.

Way back in time, before sugar was readily available, candy was made from honey. The honey was used to coat fruits and flowers to preserve them or to create forms of candy. There is still candy that is served in this form today but it is typically seen as a garnish.

Originally a form of medicine, candy was used to calm the digestive system or cool a sore throat. At this time, it began as a combination of spices and sugar and appeared only on the tables of the wealthy.

It was in the 18th century that the first candy is to believed to have come to America from Britain and France. The simplest form of candy, at that time, was Rock Candy which was made from crystallized sugar, however, even the basic form of sugar was considered a luxury and was only attainable by the rich.

* Since 1979, the world has produced more sugar than can be sold, making it very attainable and cheap. *

When the technological advances and the availability of sugar opened up the market in the 1830′s, the candy business underwent a drastic change. Candy now was not only for the enjoyment of the rich but for the pleasure of everyone. Penny candies became popular, targeting children.
◦1847 – Invention of the candy press making it possible to produce multiple shapes and sized of candy at one time.
◦1851 – Confectioners began using a revolving steam pan to assist in boiling sugar.

The two top selling candies in America have been:
◦M & M’S — M&M’s are milk chocolate drops with a colorful candy coating on the outside. The candies were first manufactured in 1941 and were given to American soldiers serving in the Second World War. M&M’s are manufactured by Mars Inc.
◦REESES’S PEANUT BUTTER CUPS — Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are round chocolate disks that are filled with a sweet, creamy peanut butter filling. The cups were first manufactured in 1928 by the Hershey’s company.

ENJOY YOUR FAVORITE CANDY TODAY!

HAPPY NATIONAL CANDY DAY!

NATIONAL CANDY DAY HISTORY

Within our research, we were unable to find the creator of National Candy Day, an “unofficial” national holiday.

NATIONAL CHICKEN LADY DAY

November 4 annually celebrates National Chicken Lady Day, a day that honors Dr. Marthenia “Tina” Dupree. For 12 years, Dr. Dupree worked for the second largest chicken restaurant in the world. She worked as Director of Community Relations and Training and was widely known due to her work in the community. Within this time and among the people that she worked with and helped, she became known as “The Chicken Lady.”

For more than two decades, Dr. Dupree helped to teach, train and certify hundreds of professional speakers, authors and trainers. In 2001, National Chicken Lady Day was created as a day that all people that she has helped over the years, along with the trickling effect of the help that those people give to millions of others. can say “thank you”.

Our research was unable to find the creator of National Chicken Lady Day, an “unofficial” national holiday.

Good Morning CGs!

Chilly here. The weatherman called for rain from 3 am on, but I haven't seen it yet. Not to say it won't come later....

Toolbox finally arrived at my garage last night. I was pretty excited. Got it pushed in to its resting position and started filling it. Unfortunately, it's close to full...maybe 80-85%. But still has some room in the various drawers and always room for expansion on the top. I like it. Have to sell the old one, no room for it, but that shouldn't be an issue.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Matthew

If anyone is looking, this set is on sale at Sears for $49.99, normally $99.99. Great deal.

National Candy Day? WTF? We just had Halloween. What is that? National Candy Wrapper Day? Matt, nice tool box. Ya, you need the one that goes on top or you can put on a drill press, miter saw, grinder and a vice. Those wrenches are a good deal for the price. Use em till it breaks. I don't use hand tools too frequently so it's nice to have em for the occasional job. High end, high quality tools are nice if you can pick them up in a lot. I look at my wallet then I look at the tool. Like I mentioned though, I only use tools for occasional work. I have plenty of Chinese tools that are over 25 years old. Quality tools too. The fountain was set in the pond yesterday afternoon. Today I have to reclean the pond for about the 4th time then fill it up with water again. Getting closer to the finish line day by day. Have 20 yards of sand coming in soon for grading the edge an putting in a small beach area. Fun, fun, fun ....... Then comes more landscaping and grass replacement. Vacation is coming on strong. Lots of work to do before the Bon Voyage.

E gaoi te taha'ata!

Looks like this is the last halfway decent day here for a while, so I hope to have time to get some fertilizer down after I vote this afternoon. The campaign ads have been spreading plenty of fertilizer for months, looking forward to them disappearing from the airwaves.

Have a great day, Gurus!

Morning guys...I went in and voted already, wasn't too busy when I went in. Cool this morning, but decent weather for November. Nice box Matt, and that is a good price on those wrenches. I have both of those sets (inch and metric)already, plus a few more that the sets didn't include.

I disagree. Out of the Chinese/Taiwanese tools these are at the top of the quality chain. I bought the GW socket sets and I like them better than the Blue Point I had (sold by snap on) made in Taiwan. I have had the GW stubby flex wrenches for a while and they are great. A lot of new (and experienced) auto mechanics are using GW for the quality to cost ratio.

The finish on my GW sockets is superior to the finish on my USA craftsman set they replaced. Socket wrenches are better, too.

This is a great set to have, comes in handy in tight places you need to turn a bolt.

Mike, on that same topic I bought a nice set of MAC pliers....also made somewhere overseas because there is no COO stamped. I like those, too.

I buy USA when I can, but it's extremely difficult nowadays without paying snap on prices.

I agree I try as much as I can to buy USA made goods. It is hard to find and I will pay the difference.

Got up early and got my votes in - used the paper ballot so the machine would not be able to 'change' my votes like I've been seeing on some online news reports. Who knows, paper ballots might not be counted correctly, either. I'm not straight up dem or repub, don't vote a party line, but I try to pick the person that best represents my views.
Had a scare on the way to work.. a van pulling a trailer on the opposite lane to me lost two wheels off his trailer, had I not been speeding, the first one would have hit me. Heard this whirring sound then saw the thing flying at me, missed my tailgate by a few feet. Then I keept looking back to see yet another fly out into traffic. Not sure if anyone was hit or not.
Due to rain here today, still warm but temps due to drop overnight and rain again tomorrow. Nice toolbox, Matt!
Happy Tuesday...

I'm with Letty. I vote my conscience. Politicians in general make me want to puke. Here's one of the funny lines the current Florida governor used against the former he is currently running against. A democrat, a republican and an independent walk into a bar. The bartender says "Hi Charlie" (Charlie Crist)

Just had 10 yards of course sand and 10 yards of fine sand dumped. The course sand for building up the pond edge for stone and the fine sand for a little beach area. We wont have to go to a resort. We'll own one.
