Howdy! I am quite disappointed in my sleep-in effort, and plan to make up for it with a nap later. Sometimes you try, and fail - the key is to keep trying.

Persevere in your endeavors, Gurus!

FOGGY AND COOL IN THE NATIONS THIS MORNING. YESTERDAY'S RAIN DIDN'T AMOUNT TO A FART IN A GALE OF WIND. THE CHEROKEES LOOK FORWARD TO A WARMER WEEK.

AFTER MARKET SOUND SYSTEM IN THE BUMBLEBEE IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY AND I SUSPECT IT IS INTERNAL TO THE SET. IT'S ALWAYS BEEN A PIA, AND I'M STARTING TO LOOK FOR AN OE CD/CASSETTE RADIO TO REPLACE IT.

MY DISLIKE OF ELECTRONICS GROWS APACE. I AM BECOMING A LATTER DAY LUDDITE. ANYBODY KNOW WHAT THE 21ST CENTURY EQUIVALENT TO TOSSING A SABOT INTO THE MACHINERY IS?

Morning guys....coffee machine isn't working right, been trying to get it working and without my morning cup I'm not too tickled. Warmer here today and through the week. I've got a few things that need to be done, so I guess I better get going.

Many moons ago when I was a computer operator, I accidentally dumped a Coke in the keyboard of the console. For many days afterward, I had to squirt isopropyl alcohol all over the keyboard first thing in the morning to get the key mechanisms unstuck.

Opti-hell?

I spent the weekend working on the Suburban... and the lawnmower.

The mower has taken to surging. Come to find out, its caused by the California emissions requirements... the jets too small and gets clogged easily. Drill it out a touch, and all is good.

The Suburban got a new drivers side seat cushion and a seat heater. Just need to tap into the fuse box and it's done. Tried to remove the turn signal switch, but it's held in by an inverse torx, need some of those now... sigh....

Oh, and removed the Christmas signs from the welcome page... thanks to Matt for doing the actual removal. I need to finish the updates to the generational forums.

Yea, I guess. The MSD only lasted 20k.

Changing the Opit's no big deal, it's the other crap.

As usual, you have to change the Opti connector since the 92-3 connector fits the Caprice not the Corvette.

Pulled out my Weller soldering gun that was only used 3 times, it wouldn't heat up. Went to HomeD, bought another Weller, soldered 2 wires and the tip broke (took it back).

Finished the Opti, car ran fine. Let it sit 2 hours and restarted, got 2 codes and the SES light.

Bad MAP sensor/circuit (connect Tech 1 to test ), did the generic testing, supprised that NAPA had a sensor in stock.

Code 16 - Opti, low resolution. Thought my soldering might be the problem but, got the 5v. from the ECM and 0.26v probing the wire to the OPTI on the other side of the connector and got that back probing the connector.

Going to bypass the connector with a jumper today but to fix it, I have to go borrow a soldering gun.

Wife called me this morning, wiper transmission linkage on her Rogue popped off again. I looked up a new linkage and it's $200. So I'll be pulling it off again tonight and trying to fix it again. The bushing is fine, so the linkage must have an unusual bend in it. I'm going to try to secure the joint so it can't separate. We'll see how that goes.

Howdy

Had to leave the property today to go for my semi annual cleaning of the tooth. Just kidding. I still have teeth. I've been meaning to go to HF of late to peruse the rows and redeem my super coupons on items I've been eyeing. The big buy was a 12 inch miter saw they had on sale for $194.99. My super coupon had it at $134.99. With my upcoming shed projects it was a deal I couldn't refuse. Used the 20% off coupon to buy the blade. I know that HF is good more for weekend warrior projects than for pro tool use so these Chinese .......... Ring ......... Ring ....... (to be continued)

As you remember from our last episode, Tommy was goofing off during the day when he was suddenly interrupted by an urgent incoming telephone call ..........

Scored a coupon from either AAA, Hemming's Muscle Car Ragazine or Hot Rod. AARP mag sometimes carries the ad too. It get's harder to score any super coupon deals because the rotation of the tool inventory discounts are usually pretty much the same. How could I not buy a 25" long 1/2" breaker bar for $8.99 Bought some magnetic trays that I've been meaning to get for years now. That place can nickle and dime you till it adds up to some real money.

Here's the saw I bought.

Beginning to think the new Optis' bad right out of the box.

Getting the correct 5v. from the ECM but pluging it into the Opti harness drops it to 0.26v.

FSM says that's an open or short but that's with a brand new Opti harness.

Didn't feel like pulling all the crap to get to the harness plug on the Opti today.

Tommy, that saw should work fine for your little project. Bill, I put a GM opti on my 94 and had trouble from the word go. Ended up buying a MSD opti to replace it. I guess any opti is a PITA.

Turned out to be a beautiful day here. By noonish I had the overhead door open in the shop. Just came in from there. It was so nice I just kept on working.

Same one Brad put in his last year, made in USA.

But, hell the MSD only lasted 20K.

damn

The best iron I have ever used is the Weller SP80. It's heavy duty, hot and durable. It's designed for stained glass.

I know you can get them at Fry's.

that looks like a nice part... I wonder if they bought a bunch of junk import cases on the cheap, put in the better electronics, and better bearings... I mean, that's what I would do... safe on the case, spend on the parts that fail.

hell, I would even scavenge for used opti's at that point. a quick blast off, powder coat, replace worn parts.

I just don't know how they are selling it so damned cheap.

Donno, I didn't take it apart other than the cap (square O-ring like the MSD).

IF I have to pull it out, I'll compare the billet base to the GM original. The MSD base is different, more machining.

According to SacCityCorvettes, the AIP opti is made in Asia (China (?)). AIP and SacCity are just distributors.

Have a SacCity opti in my '92, but no longevity..... 2 years/1900 miles.
Their opti warranty has just been increased from 1yr to 2yrs, if purchased from
SacCity. Warranty only covers the opti, not the labor to remove and install the opti.

Then, I read something wrong, my mistake.

Might be time to sell the C4 and move up to a C3.

Bill, I may have posted fiction rather than fact regarding the SacCity opti.
I believe that SacCity posted in the other forum that the optical reader used in the opti they sell is made in Asia. In my haste to draw attention to my pseudo-intellect, I posted that the opti is made in Asia. Not sure where the assembly of the opti takes place, maybe AIP (?). My apologies.

Thanks, Don.

I'm not real concerned where it's made though the ebay cheapos are Chinese. I was in electronics for 20 years, we had plants in Asia turning out quality stuff 30 years ago.

I'd just like the damn thing to work right.

The code 16 is puzzling since it's not throwing the SES light. And the engine is running right (but only for 20 miles). The voltage on that low resolution side is certainly wrong.

I'm going to do a longer test drive when I get around to it.
