Thread numba one!

Check out my vid from my first day at Streets of Willow Springs...

http://media.putfile.com/Streets-of-Willow-Springs-12-9-07-768kbps

I cut it down to 10 minutes out of almost 2 hours of track time. I even left my off-track excursion in there.

Next time out I'll use a remote microphone, the one on the camera is picking up the wind.

This was all recorded on a little Canon point-and-shoot camera with a 4GB sd card, and then I compressed it more for the upload.

I don't road race or autocross the vettes right now. We're autocrossing the Porsches but I'm going to talk smack anyway. Our first autocross for this year is next Sunday. 3/23/08. My wife is faster than me. I have my work cut out this year.

Hey CC. You saved the best for last.

Is the camera mounted on an R-D Cross Brace/facsimile? The
footage is very stable through sections that might cause
trouble for a tape-based camera.

How is the car's balance, tending towards understeer or
neutral?

No, it's not SCCA racing, it's a HPDE, High Performance Driving Event.
CC's getting better each time he goes out.

I think my wife and I are signing up for DE at Homestead at the end of April. $250 a head. What are the helmet requirements for that activity?

Tommy, that's hard to answer. You'll probably have to get a hold of the event guys. Most DE's don't have the stricter requirements that a race organization have.
Some will accept a SA 2000 helmit (SA 2005 is the latest), some will allow a DOT certified helmit, like a motorcycle helmit.
Some events even have loaner helmits.

I think you said you auto-x, your helmit for that should be ok.

We auto-x with DOT cert helmets but this is a road course event. I'll check on the loaners. Just that buying two new helmets to boot would be a swift kick in the wallet.

Your DOT's may do it.
Yea, good helmits aren't cheap.
And buying a helmit on the internet is not the way to go.

It's actually a very simple mount consisting of two pieces of thin-wall electrical conduit, and is very loosely mounted to help it absorb vibrations. This track is really poor quality. I have another vid of me at Cal Speedway, but the mount wasn't set up the same.

The more rigid I made the mount, the worse it got, to the point of shaking the piss out of the camera over the smoothest of roads. The little bit of movement this way gives you an idea of speed, and the shakes won't be as noticeable with a remote microphone.

I was surprised to find the car was actually pushing, at least on the low speed stuff. All this time I though it was tail happy, when in fact it's just been me causing throttle oversteer.

This was a Speedventures event.

Their helmet rules require a SA95 or newer helmet for all racers, and is probably moving up to SA2000 soon. I think it's related to the styrofoam or glue in the helmets aging and being less protective in a crash.

They also allow motorcycle helmets and non-SA helmets for first timers and passengers on a case-by-case basis.

As far as I know the main difference between a M (motorcycle) and SA (car) helmet is the SA is fire-rated so you can last a little longer inside a burning car.

Then there's cheaper DOT helmets, which are legal for riding motorcycles on the street and not much else, then there's a whole bunch of helmets that don't meet any standards at all.

There ya go, this is probably the rule for most organizations.
Yep, SA's have Nomex liners and usually Kevlar chin straps. Ain't it funny that you can't wear a SA on the street?

I hear that all day long, but there's a lot of features that go into an expensive helmet that have nothing to do with safety. They all pass the same test for SA certification. Are the expensive ones tested to a higher standard?

If you're just getting a feel for the sport, rent one or get the cheapest helmet that fits and is approved by your group. You can get used ones off craigslist/ebay or a cheap open face for under $150 new.

Buying fancy new equipment then discovering you're really not hooked on the sport, kinda sucks.

Point taken. But, the fairly expensive ones do have some advantages. The carbon/kevlar ones are lighter, saves your neck muscles. And the liners in the higher priced helmits are safer. SFI approval isn't everything, a set of SFI seat belts are only good for 2 years while a set with FIA approval are good for 5.
I put the $50 thing in cause I've seen guys on the other forums sauing they got a new helmit for $70.

Suggesting getting a used helmit is a great idea, I was going to mention it. For the $150, you should be able to get a closed SA2000. Also, race groups will soon be going to SA 2005 so, there will be more SA 2000's available.
You can get a new G-Force open face, SA2005 for $150 but, I don't recommend open face helmits in any car.
You can also get a hybrid G-Force, enclosed chin, for $200 or a G-Force or the new Bell Sport series full face SA 2005's for $249.

Yep, buying the equipment if you're not hooked or only plan on running once a year isn't worth the money, but if you're going to do it often get good safety equipment.

I'm willing to bet you are already "hooked".

I'll agree that a used helmet is a good way to go as long as you can see (smell) it first. I wouldn't buy one off ebay. I've seen some FOUL helmets, I would not want some people's stink on my head.

As for spending the money, all I can add is that anyone I've ever convinced to come to the track (with one exception out of about 30) for the first time LOVED it and most do it regularly. Many do not for the simple reason of cost, but still had a great time.

Yeah I would think anyone that tried it would be hooked unless they had a bad "trip" their first time out. (Just like any other drug!)

The hard part is getting people to get out there in the first place. They want to, they talk/fantasize about it, but they hype it up into some big unobtainable thing and then never show. I always say, plunk down ~$200, borrow a helment, and run what you brung! No need to wait on upgrades or your friends getting their cars ready, or other excuses, if it's good enough to let your wife drive it, it's good enough for your first track day. There's 19 yr old kids out there in Civics and V6 Mustangs for godssake!

If $200 of fun breaks your bank, you probably have no business driving a 12-24 yr old Corvette in the first place.

And for the 38th time, crashes are a rarity!

Yup, or the other type that I run into are the ones that are more into the "idea" of doing it but never man up to give it a try.

It's cool that you are getting into it CC and nice job btw. (two thumbs up fo sure)
