Well, some might know by now I recently got back from Florida with my new polo green convertible.

Today I'm getting around to straightening the panel down by the battery and putting in some Cibie headlights.

So I do the headlight half way open thing with the light switch to get at all the screws and leave the keys in the ignition. Door closes and BAM!, a few seconds later, the doors lock, windows up. Grrrr. My only set of keys is hanging in the ignition along with the remote. I had the manual on top of the car and it seems it's not supposed to do that. Well, it did!

Called auto club and first tow company (I'm in the driveway) calls back and says they can't unlock Corvettes. Hmmm, second one says it will be about an hour.

Now, I remember a pretty good technical library on CorvetteForum and there's an article on how to get back in. So I strengthen up a coat hangar (2 wires), put in a piece of flat plastic between the weatherstrip and window, maneuver the strengthened up wire to the door switch. Actually manage to trip it! (Can we get any of those articles over here?)

I need a new remote I think!!! It doesn't want to work the way the manual says. Glad I got the car for a good price...! Called tow company back and cancelled.

Glad you got it worked out! I seem to recall some people bumping the door, too, and getting it to work.

The owners manual says you should shake the car to get it out of sleep mode. I rocked that baby, but she didn't wake up! I'm not sure it counts though when the key is in the ignition.

Hardest part was to make sure that I didn't damage the weather stripping. Then to get that wire stiff enough to be able to push on the lock.

I've never trusted mine. It has never misbehaved like that, but, I really haven't given it the chance. ....window is always opened when I'm working on it. I have changed the battery on my remote and it did work a little better. Once bitten, twice shy...it will never happen to you again!

I have an extra battery(new) I can send you if you want it.

You can link that stuff, we don't care. Hell, I even wrote one of those articles, since I had to break into my car before I was convinced to get copies made.

Usually leave my keys on the ignition while the car is in the garage. It always makes noises, cycles the locks to open and even on occasion locks the car. Most of the time it will unlock itself. But on occasion I have to rock it to open it and seems to work OK.

But I have a set of keys 20 feet away in the kitchen just in case if needed.

The FOB should have a rattle to it when you shake it. Possibly the ball inside is not free and have heard that some have had success in the disassembly and repair.

This past weekend had to fix the plastic on the FOB so took it into the house expecting the car to lock. But found out with the key in the ignition it did not which was a new mode of operation I was not aware of.

That has happened more times and to more people than you would believe. No reason to get a new Fob, get a spare door key and tape or wire it underneath where only you know where it is. Personally I bought and use a 'rescue locking gas cap'. The cap has a 3 digit combination and a hidden compartment where I keep a spare set of keys. Can't get to steal my gas or the keys unless you know the combination.

Oops, should have said this before. Stupid move number 2 would be to wash the front of the engine down. New opti with dealer labor=$1200. Leaving number 3 up to your own ingenuity.

Ralf, Sorry but I was out for the last few days, but did you get into you vert?

It happened to most of us and we all have our favorite way to get back in. Mine was to pry the driver side, upper right side of the window out and insert a (are you ready for this)
broom stick, reach the passenger door lock and unlock it.

After you are in, make three key copies.

Well, if misery loves company, this one sure is one of those times. I'm definitely going to make a set of new keys. One set for the house, and I think I'll take the suggestion of one of the gas caps.

I did not have any 10 gauge wire to get in like the article states. I really did not think of a broomstick either

I thought the small rod I had for my magnetic pickup tool would be stiff enough, but I really could not/did not want to force it through the window and rubber molding. I wasn't sure if that would break something.

Dealer for the keys? Mine have a small plastic piece with a piece of metal embedded in it.

The metal in your key is the resister for the VATS system and the resistance value will need to match your key. It's not a big deal. You can measure it yourself and get the proper key from someone like Corvette Central. OR:
Any good key shop should have these instock.
Be aware that this key will cost $30+

I'm guessing with the keyless you never use the door key.

For this reason, I keep my door key in my wallet. I haven't been locked out since. How often do you accidentally leave your pants in the car anyways?
