Yesterday I turned 48, and while sitting in the garage this morning contemplating crawling back under my car, I started to think why we even count years? and what does it really matter in the whole grand scheme of things.

There was a time when growing older was probably hailed and respected by younger people, but it seems today, that is not always the case with this fast paced world we live in.
I'm thankful I still have a good job in a high-tech environment, but I still worry about the future and what I need to do, to remain sharp enough to stay competitive among the rest of the workforce. Say--- for at least another 30 years while I pay for this new house!

I think your onto something here. I think it's better to count decades. Then I'm only 5. Course most of us won't make it to 8.

Then the other problem with age is you start to take things in life seriously as you get older as evidenced by what you wrote. Your turning into an old bastard. Good thing your catching the symptoms early that way you can change before they become habits.

If I'm thinking like this today, God help me when I turn 50

I hated 50 - I wasn't anywhere near done with my 40's.

I quit counting birthdays when I was about 26 (and I'm older than you BigG).
A friend of mine was 29 and whined about turning 30. The same guy phoned me when he turned 40 and said "Man,I'm getting old". I flew back to the east coast to see him and some other friends and the first thing one of them said was "you're getting old". I told them they were getting old for a long time. They're part of the S&S crowd (sit & stare). They go on vacation to sit down, they sit on the beach, sit on the porch and sit by the pool. Ask them to do something exciting and thay look at you like you're out of your mind.

I'm not getting old, I'm getting older.

I never know what my age is off the top of my head, I have to figure out each time. I really don't care how old I am.

Paul Newman won a SCCA race a couple years ago driving a GT1 Corvette and he was 80.

Birthdays are for kids and chicks seeking an excuse to get presents.

I stopped counting birthdays once I hit 21. After that there weren't any more legal "milestones". My wife still counts my bdays and tries to make me feel old, but I don't care. I'm sure once I turn 30 in two years we'll have a party, but it doesn't mean much to me.

Feeling like kid or chick I guess, since I got some presents. They took me out for crabs & beer today for my Bday . Also got a Craftsman gift card from my Sister & Brother-in-law. So I maybe I'm just a bit spoiled. I'm still going to start using the "dog year" thing! LOL
Thanks for a lift today.

In dog years you'd be 336.

I got to see him drive at Lime Rock.

He's a really good driver, he was in a GT1 car and he beat the TransAm guys!

BTW This guy's 76, and just had cataract surgery
