I almost ate shit yesterday afternoon hanging off the bike passing a car around a double yellow when the front tire crossed the painted line and slipped out a bit. Then two turns later I did the same thing. Its nice to experience that feeling of imminent death without it actually happening.

Kevin, I love ya, man. But if you wipe out passing a car on a corner over a double yellow, you probably deserve it. Save that shit for the track.

You mean much more to us alive than dead. :shaking:

You'll notice in MOST of those clips, the rider is ready to walk away before he stops sliding. But the ones where they go all "rag doll" are disturbing, for sure.

Been there, Done that. I found that going down on ashpalt hurts more than going down on dirt. Quit roadracing bikes after 3 races and went back to the mile flat tracks which is almost as bad.
I've been run over many times, been run off a cliff going up a 14,000ft mountain in Leadville,Co., damn near went off the mountain in practice at Pikes Peak and survived quite a few soccer games on bikes (which is where you get run over).

Never broke a bone.
If I had to do it again? Damn right I would.

But I do feel better with a roll cage around me now.

Deja vu? It was so scary you relived it twice?

That video is insane. I dumped a bike one time - a Yamaha R6 when I was young and stupid and didn't know how to ride yet. Luckily I wasn't going fast and had on all my gear. But still dumb. I don't want to do that ever again. I'll stick to vettes from now on

Evel lives. Here's an excerpt from "Idle chatter/Jay Heath/Vette mag. 84-96... the last corvette that seemed like it might kill you at any moment. c5/c6 ...inspire infinite confidence w/ effortless performance and smooth quiet competence, piloting a 53-96 model has always carried with it the faintest whiff of mortal danger.

Alot of that could have been avoided. Some guys rode the wrong lines, some the tires could not hang, some were driver error. All in all its people pushing too far. I find myself pushing too hard sometimes as well. Its hard not to on a bike some times. Same as the vette cept with more to lose. I need to learn to handle my bike more and I think a few track days are called for.

I agree. Keep in mind most of that carnage is in slow motion!

But I watched that vid again with my eyes peeled, and it reinforces a few things:

Give the guy in front of you some breathing room (unless racing). He might be better at crashing than you are at avoiding him.

Low siding is always better than high siding, plus the bike slides faster than you do, stay behind it.

Kick the bike away from you so you don't get run over/stabbed/broken/burned by it.

Keep your limbs out and slide to avoid tumbling and breaking bones/joints, assuming you have enough leather to slide that far.

As soon as you're able, crawl out of the road so you don't get squashed by traffic.

Wear proper gear.

And if all else fails... slow down and don't ride beyond your abilities.

Now with all that said I'm sure if I find myself in that situation, all of that will slip my mind and I'll just panic and resort to non-existent survival instincts.

I would like to get some full leathers and get some track experience. Everyone says they're not ready for that and want to get more experience and confidence on the bike, but the track is probably the perfect place for doing just that, not public roads. Fear is paralyzing and makes it impossible to improve your abilities.

I felt like I could've reached out and touched some of the oncoming trucks and motorhomes. I also clipped my first mirror the day before while splitting traffic.

I have a buddy who used to race. He is the one who is practically forcing me to do a track day. He tell me I can learn more in 1 track day then what I could in a entire year of riding. I would be going through a beginers course. I dont know when I might do it but more than likely the next riding season.

Kinda like driving in winter.

It not yours or your car's ability that gets you in trouble, but the morons around you.

Still remember the guy that got out of his car to work on it after crashing on the blind side of a turn. In a car crunch and Darwin removes the problem. On a bike, both the dirvers could buy it.

You wouldnt catch me dead on a streetbike out here, too many people. Last one I had was back in the early 90s and was almost taken out by a basketball, lol.
Bike was later stolen and said the heck with those things.
Rode dirt bikes after that for a number of years and little by little all the guys I used to ride with started getting hurt. As my abilities increase I found I was taking more and more risks..Went down a couple times and got lucky but figured I better let it go as sooner or later Id become a gimp.
Still think about them though..For me being on 4 wheels with some steel around me is best.
