Steel_Blue_91 | Interrmittent no start!! No logic. | ||

My 91 seems to have a mind of it's own. If I go down to just fire it and let it run for a few min. during the week, it will start and run fine. If I need to move it for whatever reason, it just clicks. Happened again this morning - needed the space to pull the Ranger in and bleed the brakes. Jumped in and hit the key and got a single click and nothing. Repeated attempts got the same result. Got a little pissed and came up for a cup of coffee. Returned to smack the starter with a hammer to see if that changed anything, hit the key just for fun and BAM - she fired fine like nothing was wrong!!
Any ideas? |

Dirty battery connections. Clean them up good.
Both ends of the cables. |

I agree. When a car sits too long, the battery connections will corrode.
I would remove both + and - connections and the battery. Check the ground cable that runs to the chassis. I will bet money it is all tore up from corrosion. Take a steel brush and clean off all the rust you see. You will need to remove the battery tray, too. Check under the tray, too. Rust will be there, I can almost guarentee it. Steel brush all of it and then prime and paint with semi-gloss black. It will look like a million bucks. Next up, follow the ground cable. It will terminate on the block. Clean that up, too. Make sure the fitting at the block isn't damaged or corroded. New cables are not that expensive (from GM, even) and are a nice investment. Finally, clean the cable battery ends. Steel brush and some terminal protectant will go a long way to keeping the corrosion down. I use the red stuff in a spray can. Clean the battery ends, too. That's about it... it will take a morning to do it all, but the end result will be well worth it. |

Mine did that.
I wound up replacing the starter. Turns out the reason it failed was a rear main seal leak. It soaked the starter, and also a brand new clutch! |

You need a starter or a starter repair/rebuild. Mine did the EXACT same shit. At first tapping it with a hammer would make it go, then eventually not. Next time it acts up hold the key over and have someone tap the starter. I'll bet it will go.

IF you need a starter (you can have it tested) don't even bother with remanned parts. They are uber-junk.
Find a local shop that specializes in rebuilding these things. The mini-starter used by GM is a Mitsu or Denso design (can't remember which) and the internal contacts wear down. It shouldn't cost more than 20.00 to get that fixed. |

Possible bad cable connection at the starter, or more likely a bad starter solenoid. The battery has good voltage, and ignition switch powers starter solenoid (click) but solenoid doesn't close or make good contact for current to flow to the starter motor.

Well, I have finished the brakes on the truck and can put the vette back in the garage. As I said, I'll check on all areas of responses although it has started, without fail since the recent issue.

Im thinking you have a bad starter/solenoid also. Your symptoms mirror mine and I ended up changing the starter. That contact in the solenoid are probable defective. It was not a tough getting it out as I thought it was going to be.
If you end up changing the starter, its a great time to change the fuel filter because accessibility is increased greatly. |

If the starter was drawing current but not turning, you'd be smelling burnt plastic or replacing a fusible link.

Sorry it took so long to post back. The starting issue I had (notice the past tense)has been fixed. Was finally able to get the vette on jackstands and the starter out on Wed. Rather than buy a new (~$300) or reman.(~$150) I decided to have mine rebuilt. Dropped it at the shop Thursday afternoon. Got a call from the shop Friday to let me know that the starter was in good shape but the contacts were shot and were replaced. Got it back that day and put it in tonight. Starts each and every time now. Total cost to me - $45.00 with a 24 hour turn around time! So far, I am a happy boy.
