Looks real good.

Now you need to do the tint thing, and if MAACO still has black paint in the gun, get him to hit your rims UH HUH!!!

The back window is tinted, where I live you can't tint the side windows, to many cops have been shot, they can't see the guns through the side windows. For the wheels I just switch them off my other vette.

Are you serious ? Only $ 899 ? What did they do ? What did you do ? What kind of paint ? Did they clearcoat ?

I have a black 85 too, and I'm an idiot with paint, know nothing about it, but do know, I need some fresh paint and most have told me to expect to pay between 3-5k for an average paint job.

thanks

There is 3 different paint jobs

$399= just paint, I think they give it a quick sanding and paint over the old paint.(lots of overspray).

$899= sanding and they use a special sealer to hide the defects and they paint a color with the clear mixed in or they paint and spray a clear over top.(the only thing with this paint job is if you get a scratch you can't buff it out the sealer underneath will show. I don't think its a very thick coat of paint)

I think the next one is about $1399 and this one is sanded and a sealer applyed and a coat of paint and another coat with the the clear mixed in or a clear sprayed last.(this paint job can be buffed out if you get a scratch).

I have had it for 2 years now and no peeling or fading or flaking and no scratches. I hand wash it alot, my driveway is gravel, I get alot of dust.

I originally was going to paint it and resell it, but now I'm going to keep it and if it needs paint, I will be going back to MAACO.

Go to MAACO and they should have pictures of cars they painted, the one I was at had pictures of hot rods and vettes they painted and they looked good.

Your not going to just leave us hang'in with just 1 photo are ya? That's not right!

Car looks great in the picture.

Is that a single stage paint you got, or did you opt for the base coat, clear coat?

3-5k seems to be the standard bodyshop answer. They'll tell you that without even asking what car it is. I took my Chev van around and got that quote, than asked "what if I bring it in totally wet sanded and ready to prime?" Still got 3-5k.

I did some more looking and found an independent shop that would shoot the van for $999 if it was prepped. And the big thing with them was that they used Sherwin-Williams urathane.
You can save some significant money if you do the prep. And you can fix the chips, cracks, whatever to your satisfaction.

There's nothing wrong with going to Maaco or one of the similar shops. But, I have seen scratches and chips that were painted over even with their midpriced paintjobs.
A lot of this depends on the individual Maaco shop manager and bodyshop guys. Seems 85-84 found a good one.

Paint work can be very expensive, especially nowadays when most shops have their hands all over insurance collision repair. They get paid $3K just to fix a door skin on an insurance job; why should they be bothered with painting your whole car for $3K? It really sucks. When I was in college i worked for a restoration shop that did high dollar paint jobs. I spent many days removing parts and sanding. You'd be amazed even with 2-3 guys how many hours actually goes into proper prep work. I can understand why if you don't do any prep work its expensive. But I can't understand why when you bring them a car 100% prepped why the price is still $3K.

Meanwhile on my 85 Monte Carlo, I sanded the entire car down to bare metal, fixed any rust spots, and disassembled everything except the front windshield. Went to Earl Shieb (didn't know any better) and they told me for $800 they could do a "factory Paint job" in black. They f'ed it up anyway. Amazing!

Here is a few close-up pics of his paint that I cropped & enhanced a little bit to see better.

In my opinion, considering he paid a small fraction of what most quote, I think its pretty darn good based upon what my in-experienced eye's see. At the very least, I think we can say its a pretty good looking 30-30 car.... which for an $ 800 paint job, its pretty darn good !!

thanks for sharing your pics !!

I would love to know where he is located and which Maaco he went to. My Monte Could use a new coat of paint, and I wouldn't want to spend more than $500-800 on it.

I think mine is maaco. I'm rocking 96% of it.

The other 4% is blowing through a field somewhere.

Those are carefully positioned pre-peel shots, and also pre-date all paint chips I've gotten at the track.

My Ford LTD had maaco, and it began peeling about 5 years afterwards. Must be time release paint. Basically they didn't clean and prep some of the surfaces before spraying.

I don't want a nice paint job, I just want it to stick to the damn car and stay there.
