Well, I'm sad to say this but my boy got his first car and no it's not a Corvette. He had his mind set on a 2001 PT Cruiser. His mom was really the deciding factor on this one. No offense to any of you who have these and I'm sure they are nice, but its not my cup of tea. In order to make it somewhat acceptable, I did a quick detail job on it and it turned out all right. Here's some pictures.
If I want to really make him jealous, I can pull at these babies! |

I've seen some pretty neat customized PT Cruisers - should be a good first car for him.

Well, it looks nice and clean. I would have thought a PT Cruiser to be more of a chick's car, but maybe that is why he wanted one! So he can reel them in!

Oh no, not a PP bruiser!
My kids think it's an old person's car. On the bright side, your son is motivated enough to get a car. My youngest is 17 and all he wants out of life is to sit in his room and play warcrack. No license, no job. *sigh* |

I got that beat, my Wife's little Brother Anthony is 22, no job, never even sat behind the wheel of a car, likes Anime pron, thinks Asians are the smartest culture, hates American life style, and plays nothing but video games and watches TV until 3 am every day. Sleeps until noon. No end in sight. Oh and my first car was a '91 Taurus GL, so I didn't have a cool first car either, but I did buy it with my own money, and made sure it did 140 on the highway once. |

I have a little more control, since he's my son, and it's my house. That wouldn't fly with me. As it stands now, he does nothing, he gets nothing. I have money to help him with a car, but I told him, he needs a job and to save $500 before the car appears. As long as he does ok in school, and helps a little around the house, we're good. Once he graduates, which is next year, I'll turn up the heat. I just wish he was self motivated. My first car was a 1967 Dodge Coronet that my dad and I had to put a new axle and brakes on before I could even drive it. I paid $50 for it. |

My first car was a 1976 AMC Pacer. I woulda given anything for something as cool as a 1950 Ford Anglia...
My only real concern is that PT Cruisers are slow... especially in automatic form. And if loaded with people, they get even slower. Check that the headgasket was serviced. There were recalls on late 90s Neons for that problem. I don't remember when it ended, tho. |

Did your son go thru driver's ed? Out here the drivers ed consists of the students getting a book and that's it. No in car training at all.
Theres a really good program put on by TireRack,Scca and BMW called Street Survival. It's a one day course on defensive driving (no race stuff). The nice thing is that it only costs $60 and you get a free one year membership to SCCA. The most amazing thing about this course is not what the kids learn but what the parents say after they get one ride thru the course at the end of the day, most say "I can't do that in my car and I've ben driving 20 years". http://www.streetsurvival.org/ |

FWIW, my wife's '03 has been a dependable vehicle for 129k. :thumbright:
But we got her the GT Turbo, so at least it has some get-up. |

Not too bad for a 1'st car. Interesting choice...
I'd be begging for the keys to the C3 myself!! :toothy5: My first was a 63 Ford pickup, with 3 on the tree. My biggest upgrade was when I got the FM converter installed.. (under the dash, right next to the CB radio!) |

Geeze, my first car was a '60 Chevy Impala, 348, 3 duces, factory 4 speed, 4:11. My second car was a '63 Z06.

Saw a white '63 Z06 tanker on Mecum yesterday. I think it neared a quarter million.

I find a 16 year old wanting a PT cruiser a little strange... but I can't really talk I guess (see avatar). I try to stick with Big 8's or quick 6's. Is he a car enthusiast? I know they make turbo kits and such for that car. Maybe he's got an ulterior motive you are not aware of.

My mom bought one the first year they came out. Still has it. Not a terrible car to drive, expect it's slow as all heck. Don't bother trying to pull out into traffic with that little 4 banger. And the blind spot in the rear is killer. Other than that it's not an uncomfortable car. I wouldn't personally buy one as my first car, but that's just me. I see it as an old lady car (sorry mom!)

Trust me this really wasn't my choice or his. His mom made the call without me there and bought it for him. He's a good kid and makes excellent grades in school so this is just cheap transportation. He is fully aware of the cars reputation and that it won't get him any play. However, he is thankful he has something drive. He knows that he'll NEVER drive any of my Corvettes. He'll have to earn his own.
My first car was a 1978 Camaro Z28! |

Just the fact that he's 16 and has a car will make him a lot of "friends" quick. You'll see.
