I remember seeing trucks like those when I was a kid. Sometimes I'd see them when I was walking miles to school through sub freezing temperatures and three feet of snow but those were mostly residential oil tankers.

My family actually knew the guy that invented the modern car carrier. From what I heard he made a bundle on the design.

Interesting.
Way back, I was a sales engineer for a hydraulics distributor. I sold some pumps and valves to 2 guys working in a barn in Pa. on a new truck bed design. The guys names were Jerry and Dan.
Their finished prototype was the first rollback, flatbed towtuck. Their company became Jerr-Dan, the largest mfg. of rollbacks for many years.
