I flat out SCORED at the U-Pick-It lot today. Got a pair of these Jaguar speaker grills for FREE.

They are real metal, real chrome, real neat. And I have wanted to do something cool with my door speaker pods for some time.

I am currently working on the drivers side door.

Follow this one along...

Pic 1 is a grill assembled, 2 is disassembled.

The first thing I did was clean the grills and repaint them. Simple shot of gloss black did that!

Next up is the baffle.

Pic 3 is the chrome ring taped on the board, I then marked around it.

Pic 4 is me using the masking tape roll to approximate the speaker.

The last pic is the board all marked up. The blue areas get cut away, so does the area outside the circle.

The red boxed areas will need the router to trim them down and allow for the speaker to sit flush.

Next up tomorrow, cut'n and fitting the speaker to the baffle, then fitting to the door panel.

If I have the material, I will cover the panel and be done.

it's a default thing with photoshop.

I got the baffle cut. It all fits.

What I did was cut out the ring and drill out the holes for the chrome bezel. Easy enough.

The trick came with flush mounting the speaker into the baffle. I used a big (11/16") boring bit to remove material so the tabs would still fit in.

Looks nice and flush. Tomorrow, I am going to attack the door itself to get the panel installed.

oh, man... the pass side has been dealt with for years.

I took off the carpeted bit, removed the carpet and then cut out a nominal 4" hole.

I then took a baffle and wrapped it in cardboard. I then soaked baffle and cardboard in fiberglass resin to give it strength and weather protection.

I then hot glued said baffle/tube thingy to the plastic and finally filled the entire thing up with expandable foam.

Using a hacksaw blade, I cut the foam down to size and sculpted same. Finishing with a coat or 2 of bondo and some alcantara type material.

I just finished sculpting the foam and layering on the bondo.

The bondo is now drying. Next up, I will hit the bondo with a cheese grater and then smooth it with sandpaper.

After that, I will cover with fabric. Pictures soon!!!

Pic 1:

After the bondo, it's time for a thin (.25") foam. The idea here is that the foam will mask any (many?) imperfections in the bondo. The foam is also rather dense, so it gives the finished panel that factory feel.

You will note that there are two circles... those refer to a pair of screws I used to retain the speaker baffle while doing the construction.

Pic 2 is the finished product! I will photo it in the car tomorrow. But it looks SWEET!

yes, beige interior... the beige bezel is really hard to come by. So I went with black.

Bogus,

how are those 4" in the door aimed?

if I can figure out a way to put a speaker in the 94-96 passenger side door panel, then I might be able to 'raise the stage'

I have the 4" and tweet in the rail and the 6.5" in the door (using 93 panels)

but if I something would work for the 4" in the newer panel I would be willing to move all the speakers around.. but I still might just do a tweet and 6.5" since I don't have enough power for the 3-way right now

aimed? heh... pretty much straight out. There isn't enough space to get fancy... and he speakers, Canton RS3's, have very good off-axis response.

You could do this on a later panel, it will just require recovering the entire door.

Maybe..

on the driver side, it is just cutting a hole and mounting it (for me)

but I am curious how I could do it for the Pass side..

So Bogus,

on the divers door above, did you build out the OEM panel with your speaker mount?

the Driver side seems like it would be fairly easy to mod ( event he 94-96 panel) The 94-96 Passenger panel seems like I could do something like a pod or such for the 4" have it built out about 1.5" I think. As for recovering if I do it right I could make the pod and cover it so it would bolt to the panel and if I find more vinyl like a sample I have I might be able to just cover the panel I make.

I am just not sure how to go about making a speaker pod/panel..

I built up the OEM panel.

Remember, on the 90-93 doors, the carpeted area is removable.

I used foam and bondo to build it up.

Somewhere above, I outline the steps I took to make the right door panel speaker.

yes.. you sent me a Black one.. I have a pair of reds ones as well..

I need to take a couple pictures of what how it looks with the speaker where I think i want it. Although before i do anything i need to play around with the power tot the fronts again

As for a phone call, we can do that too, but like I said i think I know what I want, just need to determine what to use to shape it..

If you want to brain storm, we can talk...

Perhaps you can take a negative mold off the passengers panel? Then make something to fill in the gap.

what is the best way for a negative mold?

I was thinking plastic on the panel then use great stuff or something to get the imprint

As soon as I find time to play I will let you know for that brain storm call
