I dropped off my water pump, opti, valve covers, etc so they can put the motor together for break-in. It looks great! and probably one to two weeks away from completion at the most. It should be on the dyno by late next week.
Here are a few shots I took today. |

Cool. So, what are some of the specifics other than it's the same block and a cast crank, I think. I've been following your progress, but am hazy on what's all in there. Heads, pistons, rods, deck height, etc. What are those cuts at 4 and 8 o-clock the top of the cylinders for?

Well that didn't take long for someone to pick up on the chamfering at the cylinders. As it was explained to me; some heads/ like Lt1 heads have a larger combustion chamber than cylinder. These reliefs allow a smoother transition of intake and exhaust gasses. Most times when the valves are unshrouded and then the heads bolted on the block without the reliefs like have done to mine, the gasses hit that edge and cause turbulence. There you have it! LOL. I have no ideas what I just said! Heads are factory LT1 heads that were originally ported by Lloyd Elliot two years ago. Jerry just completed the port matching and did some resurfacing of the intake and exhaust runners and smoothed the transition area out where it was not to his liking. Rods are Eagle I-Beam and Pistons are forged Sealed Power. I'm not sure what the deck height came out to, but I know he shaved enough to take the serial no. off the block. I'll finish this later... gotta run |

I really like the guy's degree wheel pointer. I have that setup for my mikes but never thought to use it with a pointer. Beats my bolt on piece of welding rod.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I thought some turbulence in the combustion chamber was a good thing. The more turbulence, the better the fuel and air mix, creating a more efficient burn. |

I hope to be there when they do the break-in runs, but I may have to work.. I was told that they will not be doing power pulls on the engine dyno for this one as it would take more dyno time and more importantly money. Besides that it will not have anything resembling the final configuration of intake or fuel to feed it. They will just be breaking it in using a modified intake manifold and a carburetor. After Mick does the tuning and we get it running good, then I'll take it to Tony's Corvettes in Gaithersburg, MD for a final Dyno tune and a few power pulls to see what its got. There they will weld in a bung for a wide band sensor to get a better view of what is going on. |

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that when they did the machine work on the block, they smoothed and all of the oiling holes so the oil could easily flow back into the pan. I failed to take photos of those, although I did show the one photo of the area where the oil pump bolt up. You can see how they smoothed that area for oil flow. That is how the other drains are smoothed out. Of course they did all the clearance for the rods. I also have a smaller than stock base circle cam installed. I suppose this saved them a little grinding. I don't know too much about that though.

Hey Don, You're right. A 'small circle' cam is required for clearance when using a 383 stroker crank/rods/piston build. I don't believe the rotating assy can be "clearanced' properly without that cam. Fun to watch your build. |

I didn't see anywhere that you mentioned final displacement? 383, 396, 355 or ???
I was also curious about cam specs and if the car is an auto or stick. Thanks for sharing! EDIT: Just found it in the other post. 383, 224/230. |

Sorry about that Josh... I should have organized these threads better. There are a few of them. I intended to start one rebuild thread and then keep adding to it, but things just got muddled along the way.
This whole drama started last June when I was asking what the best methods were to launch my car at the drag strip. I'll be very happy when it is back on the road. It will nearly be a year when its done. Just sickening! |

I am jealous. That looks great!
Are you doing anything to your drive train to beef it up for the extra power? |

PeteK is finishing up the transmission with one of his HD rebuilds. As for the Dana36, it will remain, but I did have it all rebuilt and gone over last year by the Corvette guru guy at our sponsor Sport Chevrolet when I had them replace the Ring & Pinion with 3.54 gears. It also has all new U-joints... oh and a polished driveshaft! |

You know... I have no idea what kind of power this thing will actually make. I can tell when I talk to Jerry about power he kind of says that I will be very happy with the how this engine will perform but is hesitant to quote any numbers at this time. He is really about the whole package with a high priority of reliability. He thinks all of us internet car nuts focus too much on flow numbers and dyno sheets. He's probably correct. So, I'm not even speculating on the actual power and torque at this point and just cross my fingers we get some good numbers after its in the car and Mick sets the tune for me.

He is right, but there is a reason why the interweb is so hung up on numbers - it's quantifiable. It is something you can associate to... saying the car is badass is one thing, but to say it is bad ass with 450chp, then they have something to compare with. |
