While reading my wonderful FSM tonight (light reading), I noticed that is says to NOT reuse the caliper mounting bracket bolts. Good grief, I see our guys changing rotors frequently and I have never seen them swap bolts. I did the last time because I replaced the bracket and caliper with the new GS units.

How many of you gurus change bolts every time? It also says to torque them to 165ft.lbs -- pretty stout.

When I did my upgrade, Jeff provided new bolts for his adapters to mount to the car but I don't remember if there were new abutment bracket bolts. If not, I reused the stock ones and I have no problem with that.

Precautionary statement......

Brake components can crystallize from excessive heat caused by continuos hard braking conditions. That is when you toss the bolts.

I remember seeing that too, and only changed them because they were probably close to 20 years old...but I've never changed them on any other vehicle.

Agreed, and mine have been off a lot less times than yours
I clean them up and re-use. I get em torqued close to the 165 number.

Caliper bolts or caliper bracket bolts, Don? You don't need to mess with the brackets when you change rotors.

Yea, but let's be realistic here, at what threshold of abuse does this apply? Normal braking may result in 800~1000F, track braking will result in upwards of 1500F, but how much of that is needed before this crystallization occurs? That sounds like a lot.

I am thinking more along the lines of the torque rating to tighten the bolt may distort the threads, so the next time you torque it, 165ftlbs isn't enough.

Perhaps threadlock will fix that, but perhaps not.

It does partially explain why a bolt could back out, tho...

I am still debating my next brake upgrade... but I am leaning heavly toward a C5 upgrade. I currently have the GS upgrade. Those calipers have about 115k miles on them. This means I either replace or rebuild at this juncture. Overall, the last brake job was done in 2005. I last bled them in 2009 (when I did the engine out). I know the rear brakes need attention; they haven't been touched since the GS brakes went on in 2001!

It was fall of 2001 that Jeff @ Superior Chevy did the GS group purchase. 2 calipers, 2 rotors, 2 brackets, pins, bolts all for $440, shipped. What a steal that was.

That was a steal! Mine are in pretty good shape, but I haven't driven my car much in the past couple years!

If I were to do something different and had lots of money and time to throw at it, I think it would be cool to do the C6 Z06 upgrade. I have been following the C6 Z06 upgrade thread over on CF and it looks interesting. A bit pricey, but very cool.

Considering they come with threadlocker on the threads is why it says to replace them. Can't trust a tech to clean a bolt and put the correct threadlocker on them. Takes less time, almost idiot proof (still have to use a TQ wrench).

Has nothing to do with heat stress.

Am I doing something wrong? I can see no way to remove the rotors without first removing the caliper brackets.

The last brake job I did on a guys C4 was 4 years ago. I could have sworn that I didn't remove the brackets.
Maybe I was smokin' crack.

The racer guys in my club just pull the whole caliper and bracket as an assembly when only changing rotors if the pads have good mileage left on them. I was watching my friend Pat change out to some nice Brembo rotors the other night to get ready for an upcoming HPDE. It took him hardly no time to replace all four rotors.

Why I like racecars on the track instead of street cars: Rotors on my racecar - 15 years.
Rotors on the FE in my avatar - 3 - 4 years of abuse.

Yeah.. these guys are always changing rotors and pads to go to HPDEs. Most of them like running CarboTechs on the track but won't put up with the squealing for daily driving. Plus some have matched track rotors and pads and a set of DD rotors and pads. That is too much of a hassle me thinks.

The C5/6 guys that drive hard are only getting 2 events out of the std. rotors, that's nuts IMO. But, to each his own.

So I guess it's not necessary to replace the bolt every time you remove if there aren't any issues and they are prepped properly, but the factory says to do so just to cover their a**? They sure look stout enough.
