I like the look of the car. What is the matter with the stock engine? Were they junk or underpowered? Of course anything is better with a small block in it but I am just wondering why bother.

Don't really know what I have till we dig in. If the engine is shot I need options. It was running about 5 years ago but needs a fuel pump I believe. If I can clean her up and get her running that would be great. I also know there are tranny issues.

is it an auto or 5spd? If it was my 928 project, I would look for a late model 5spd manual. They really improved it towards the end, and will easily hold an LT1.

928 engines are not cheap, so if you want to spend $$, spend it on the gearbox. There are several firms that offer conversion kits to install the V8.

It's an auto an I aim to keep it that way. Pure laziness. I can shift with the 911's or the 90. Sometimes I just want to put it in D and go.

Hope you get it.
A garage is a wonderful place to hang out.

The silver one is pretty sweet. I don't like the yellow one with the blower sticking out of the hood, that belongs on an old school muscle car IMHO.

I looked up some specs on the 928. They had a 4.5 liter engine that made 220 hp. The car wieghed 3300 lbs. It was intended as a touring car not so much a sports car according to what I read. The engine looks cool I think.

Later on the GTS model had 345 hp and ran the quarter in 13.7 sec. Top speed of 170

Pull the stock engine. Turn it into a coffee table like on Top Gear.

Almost any SBC would be a great swap, and fairy cheap if you get a used complete engine + harness.

There were quite a few changes over the years, as with any car's evolution.

My 84 928S had a 4.7L SOHC V-8 that made 240HP.

On regular street tires I ran 14.30's@98mph with a 2.1+ 60ft time. From a roll that car would haul the mail for such a small engine. Honestly it had amazing performance for the year it was built.... but people kind expect that in a Porsche.

928's were intended as high speed touring cars and excelled at that kind of driving. I owned my 928S from 1999 until 2005. In that time I put well over 100K miles on it, crossed the USA from NC to CA (2 times) and drove it from Fla to Canada once. Heck the week I bought it we road tripped it from NC to Indy for the PRI show... great car on the road. Comfy seats, lots of room for 2 people (not so much for 4 people). It would pull down 19-20mpg on the hwy all while running 90mph like it was nothing. Pretty good for a 1984.

The electrical stuff in these cars will kill you. These cars are a mass of all brown wiring and plastic relays. The fuse box is in the passenger side floor board... It's quite intimidating to trouble shoot electrical problems on them. I always kept a number of different lenght "jumper wires" and a schematic of the wiring systems. Saved my butt a few times when the fuel pump relay or something else decided to stop working.

I always did my own maintenance on the engine. Saved me a bunch of $$$. The timing belt and waterpump have to be changed every 60K miles and of course on mine all the rollers and tensioner were in need of replacement too... The total in factory Porsche parts (I would never buy rebuilt) was a bit over $600 and 4hrs for me to change the parts out. Even with the expense I don't think I could install a LSX or SBC in one.

I wouldn't mind owning another 928 if I ever have the chance with the right car. They were very good cars but like a lot of things today many are neglected and just plain old. I have a lot of good memories with my 84.

Will - What you say is about what I have heard. Lovely car on the road, kinda small inside, excellent performance, pricy-ish parts, but even more expensive labour, excellent build quality.

Oh, and the electrical gremlins!!!

Fortunately I have a great Porsche mechanic. He only charges me an arm and lets me keep my leg. Porsche parts I can get through Pelican parts or a local parts house called Vertex. Every once in awhile you need a part that has to be imported from Germany. Here are my 3 main parts suppliers.

Porsche parts are usually very available. If nothing else, there is also a lively used parts supply. Remember, Porsche sells USA first and a vast majority (some 60%) are sold here (historical averages).

Another thought, Tommy, is a place called Jim's Import Auto Salvage. They are in Sebring, FL, of all places.

Head up 27, to Sebring. Pass the light at 98 for the track, and continue north towards Sebring proper. The next light, IIRC, is at county rd 17, the Highlands Regional Hospital. Hang a right there and go a bit to DeSoto. It's a light, hang a right there. Not quite a mile, over the tracks, on the left.

Worth looking into. http://www.jimsimport.com/

Thanks for the tip Andy. There's a place in L.A that's a big Porsche salvage operation. I checked out their prices and they made me want to I wouldn't buy a windsheild wiper arm from them . Their pricing is insane !!! Called another one that was in the Porsche Panorama Ragazine. They say in their add. Call us first. We have what you need. So I called them for a part. They said they didn't have it. I know they had it. They have too much inventory not to have had it. They're too busy trying to sell engines and transmissions that they didn't even want to look for the part I wanted. Screw em.

I hate that snob factor.

Check a copy of Grassroots Motorsports. IIRC, there was a vendor that sells used Porsche parts in there, too. It's been a while... but there used to be.

I always bought parts for my 928 from one of these 3 places.

928 International

http://www.928intl.com/

Mark has a huge used parts selection. His place is in an industrial park in Anaheim, CA. I drove over there back in 2003 while I was stationed at 29 Plams CA to meet them. Nice people.

928 Specialist

http://www.928gt.com/

These folks are in Spruce Pine , NC and have a bigger place than Mark. I've been to their 928 get together (Sharks in the Mountains) once, like in 2000 (I think). Nice folks and they put on a great Porsche gathering.

Last there is Devek which is pretty much out of business now.

I know you have a few 911's so you should already know about Rennlist which is a good Porsche resource board.

Update. Replaced the front wipers, hood struts, hatch struts, fuel pump relay, a couple of fuses in the fuse panel including the fuel pump fuse, the fuel filter and repaired the hatch lock that wasn't locking. Repaired with a well placed shim. Now I have to see if the fuel pump is getting any power. Still not getting any pressure so I'll check the lines and fuel pump operation. I'm also going to check all electrical systems to find out what's working and whats not.

Baby steps .....
